I really liked this movie, it honestly is great to see Henry Selick go back to his roots and make a brand new stop motion animated film and especially getting to work with people like Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele. While I do think the story is a bit all over the place, the execution definitely makes up for it to help make the film enjoyable, the animation is absolutely gorgeous and is just as beautiful looking as Selick's past works, and the characters, while some like the villains aren’t really that well done, a lot of the others are really great. Overall, Wendell & Wild is a really great stop motion animated feature, and a great come back for Henry Selick in the realm of Stop Motion. Also, I gotta say after looking at the villain a bit more, he does kinda resemble a certain orange man who’s name shall not be spoken.

I think Wendell & Wild is good but not great. I think I like it less than you are in which I give it a 7/10. I can agree that the story feels unfocus with too many subplots feels all over the place due to a weak writing in which Selick and Peele try to bring in what they want to add in as possible, similar to what Peele was doing with his screenplay for Nope, and I feel like the ending just ended off weak upon trying to wrap all the storylines up in the end too. Shoot, I forgot that the villains were underdeveloped too as part of that criticisms unlike the protagonists that were given good development. Other than that, I will say that it was fun thanks better developed characters, voice acting, the animation, humor, visuals including horror elements, themes, soundtrack, and creative direction by Henry Selick. As a Henry Selick film, I say I put this in the middle where it better than James and the Giant Peach and especially Monkeybone but not as brilliant as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline in which I can see everyone can mostly agree. I’m a bit disappointed with the how story was unfocus overall, but I still have a good time with it at least. Two more things to comment on, did you know that shadow puppetry was taken inspiration from the shadow sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt 1 according to Jordan Peele because that was interesting? He already apply that in the new Candyman when he produced that film and now here he is doing again with this so that was cool. Finally, that Klaxton girl reminded me of Nicki Minaj in the way how she had her hair dyed. I mean if her father looked closer to “you know who”, then so does his daughter looking just like Minaj. Not sure it was intentional or not but I think they know what they’re aiming for. 😂

It was a movie that I was really hyped to see, and unfortunately due to all the story plots causing it to be unfocused. As a whole I do give this movie a 7/10, and it is mostly due to the certain plot elements needing to be fleshed out more as well as scenes to be rearanged more so that it really focused on certain parts. And I understand the issue regarding the villains as they needed to be fleshed out more. The animation I cannot deny is the best part of the film and it definitely was great as well as the voice acting. And for the writing of the characters, I think Kat is the best character with the biggest character arc. Sister Helley was nice but I really wanted to know more about her and her relationship with the Janitor and know more about Hell Maidens and Bearzebub, because when I get involved with stories about world building I crave lore, backstory, their purpose and structure. For Wendell and Wild I like the dynamic but the comedy can either be hit or miss for me, but I still got a few laughs out of it. Raul, was a good character as well that served a good friend to Kat. Buffalo Belzer could have been another possible great antagonist or a possible obstacle to face but with the way it ended it felt like him and the janitor had a quick change of heart and wrapped up their storylines very quickly. Father Best could have had potential to be a good villain but I kind of knew that he was just a side villain to the main villains being the Klaxons (on a side note, do you think there was any meaning to why they were called the Klaxons, I feel like when I saw those signs that said Klax Korp there were two K's and it felt like the movie was saying something, I feel like there was something there but I feel like I am reading into it to much and it could just be my imagination, so yeah). And as for the Klaxon's I wished that the daughter discovering the truth about her parents was shown but then again maybe it shouldn't have due to the run time. As for the parents and owners of Klax Korp, I would really like to have seen more of their characters fleshed out as well and I will agree after hearing that the father was supposed to resemble "you know who", when I do look at the wig he had on his head, I can see that. I do need to see Monkeybone to know all of Selick's works. But I do know that Wendell & Wild is movie a good movie, but I prefer Selick's last film Coraline more because I felt it had more focus on the story and the world building and villain had more development which made me more engaged to watch. And with this film I was engaged with some of the things it brought, but I feel like it had why to much that it did bite off more than it can chew.

Now that you bring that up I do kind of see that Nicki Minaj comparison now that I look at it.

Glad Henry is back. Wish it was better but its still pretty solid altogether.
