Howdy, wonderful people!

I'm back into multimaterial printing at the moment, and finding any excuse to add a little colour to designs!  That said, this little treasure chest is intended to print just fine in a single material, too!

This diminutive treasure-oriented storage unit is a print-in-place design that requires no supports and prints with the lid open.  The insides of both the base and the lid are angled down to a V shape to allow them to be printed support-free and upside down, which in turn allows the lid top to be a nice curved shape (since it's the bottom of the lid that sits on the printer bed).

Two sets of files are provided: A whole bunch of files divided up for multimaterial printing, and a single STL for printing in a single material.  If you're printing in a single material then you'll want to make sure you use the single material model, as it has a few extra touches of texture that the multimaterial version doesn't have (or need)!

Print Description

This is a regular print, but since it's an articulated model you'll want to make sure your bottom layer is nice and neat, and that you don't have any print issues like overextrusion or stringing that might bond together moving parts!

The moving parts are designed to allow for a little squishing of the bottom layers, however, so don't stress too much if you have a bit of elephant footing.

Multimaterial Considerations

Note on multimaterial prints: what we're talking about here is using special hardware to print more than one material at a time on a printer.  So, something like a Prusa MMU, Mosaic Palette, an IDEX printer or a colour mixing printer.  If you just want to manually change filaments part-way through for effect then you'll want to print the single-material version!

If you're printing the multimaterial version I'm going to assume you already know how to work with whatever system you have!  One thing to note is that the bottom few layers are all a single colour, just to keep bed adhesion as simple and reliable as possible!

Print Dimensions

The Little Treasure Chest is 144mm x 94mm on the bed and 51mm tall.

Supports needed?

No supports required!

Infill?

You can go pretty light on the infill on this one - it's mostly going to fill the wedge-shaped inserts that make the interior printable!

Scalability

This one isn't intended to be scaled, but the tolerances are all 0.5mm and you might be able to scale it down a little if you're really careful about your print settings!

Print Orientation

The model prints hinged open and flat on the bed like so:

Further Thoughts

You might notice that this multimaterial print only uses three colours, even though plenty of systems support more than that these days.  I do try to be a bit judicious with the use of colours, just because of the implications for waste and print time as the number of colours used in a layer increases.

That said, there's nothing stopping you just assigning eight different colours to the parts of this model, just for the sake of it! :)

Happy printing!

xoxo

Sven.
