(UPDATE: Here's a link to our previous installment. Note that page 5 above was already seen in said previous post, but I tacked it on here again to make the narrative easier to follow. )

Behold, pages 5-10 of my layouts for issue #1 of 2004's Marvel mecha-team miniseries Livewires, titled here as "Unnamed Robot Comic" as I'm more than a tad dubious about identifying this series of posts publicly. Keep this to yourselves, won't you? (The joke of using the title "Unnamed Robot Comic", by the way, is that Livewires' mecha protagonists consider the term "robot" to be an offensive slur.)

The final art on the series was done by my old bud Rick Mays, but as you can see I cranked out insanely tight, fully dialogued, Sharpie-and-pencils layout pages for the series ahead of time; not only was this approach a faaaar from cost-effective use of my worktime, but in retrospect I feel that these layouts constricted Rick from drawing the beautiful faces and figure work he produced for other books. (Oh, well.)

Note that team member Social Butterfly was effectively a "prototype Emp" in many ways, down to the fact that both look cute in cutoff jean shorts:

In an odd turn of events, later on in Empowered's volumes Emp has actually become a bit  more like Livewires' Social Butterfly, in that she's grown to be a warm, generous, and nurturing force of nature like her mecha counterpart; early on in the series, Emp was far too wracked by insecurity and self-doubt to express that dormant aspect of her personality.

Howeva, in a more superficial light, modern-era Emp is notably different from Social Butterfly on the level of physique, given that nowadays she's notably softer and heavier than the skinnier mecha as she's reached a greater degree of self-acceptance. No, really!

Anyhoo, stand by for more Unnamed Robot Comic layouts shortly, okay?

NEXT TIME ON THIS HERE PATREON: The new "M/W/F+" posting schedule has kicked in with a non-fixed selection of posts, so who knows what the heck I might post next? (Alas, you have to be subscribed to the $5+ Patron tiers to get the full M/W/F treatment every week of the month.)

SB remains my favorite Livewire, largely for her cheery attitude, though the long legs and cutoffs don't hurt.

Gods, I love this miniseries. Really need to get the individual issues, as you are correct in stating that the TPB is the worst version.

If the Livewires had ever played a key role in some modern plotline, Marvel might've considered reprinting the series properly, but that seems unlikely.
