Everyone has one night they'd like to redo.
This is your chance.

“One Night Adventure” is Maverick’s first foray into the territory of authoring a text adventure game. This game gives you the chance to fulfill in first-person perspective your fantasies of flirting, fattening, and (if you play smart) fornicating with the most (well, until recently, anyway) impressive “student body” at your high school.

To play the game, download the attached HTML file and then open it with a web browser like Edge, Firefox, or Chrome.

In the early 1980s, Choose Your Own Adventure books were omnipresent at my middle school—dotting desks and bulging backpacks of dorks, nerds, athletes, and A-listers alike. Quick to action and easy to read, the series allowed even scrawny kids like me to assume the roll of an intrepid explorer, sleuthing detective, or sword-wielding knight and mold their destiny through a series of branching choices presented every few pages. Back then--with video games in their infancy, D&D sessions complex and time-consuming (not to mention stigmatizing!), and interactive escape rooms and virtual reality attractions still decades away--Choose Your Own Adventure novels were the preferred way to role-play.

Unfortunately, the series became so popular, so quickly, a decline in quality was predictable. Dozens of ‘Pick-a-Path’ rip-offs seemed to sprout overnight, and even the name brand hired iffier authors to keep up with demand. While the original authors, such as the esteemed Edward Packard, understood the format’s limitations and appeal, and could manipulate the formula to make it seem like you were more involved than you were, lesser authors presented broadly ambiguous choices (“Do You Want to Visit Planet A or Planet B?”) that strung together events without much recourse. What’s worse, many incorporated ‘gotcha’ endings that would kill you no matter how rash or rational your decisions. (An appropriate metaphor for life, but still frustrating!)

Although their novelty wore off fairly quickly, Choose Your Own Adventure books sharpened my mind and got me in the habit of reading. I always wanted to write one…particularly once hard-copy limitations were lifted by the digital age. You can only pack so many choices and results into 150 pages, after all. And if a character discovers a clue on page 5, all subsequent branches need to account for that. Add in a few more story-altering choices and a book could quickly balloon from its binding. That’s not a problem in the digital world!

Of course, technology can’t make-up for bad writing, and most of the online efforts I’ve read to this point are slapdash collaborative affairs that peter-out after a few choices. So, just like "The Lesson" was my response to the puerile weight-gain fiction available circa 1995, "One Night Adventure" is my attempt to properly utilize the CYOA format for our particular brand of fiction. I really hope you enjoy it!

Not to bore you, but here are a few quick points to keep in mind as you proceed:

  • My stories can be pretty dark, and this one has some dark paths—if you choose them. (Sicko!)
  • This is more a game than a traditional Choose Your Own Adventure tale. That will become clear as you play.
  • After your initial play through, you may come to a passage you think you’ve reached before; HOWEVER, details may be subtly different and new options may present themselves. Consider it a ‘butterfly effect’ not possible with traditional CYOA novels.
  • There are close to 40 unique endings. There is no ultimate victory or perfect ending, however. There are good ones, bad ones, and a whole lot that fall somewhere in between.
  • That said, there is one ending—one that could be considered the best—that is particularly well hidden. Drop us when you think you’ve found it!
  • There may still be a few rough edges in the game file. If you stumble across a typo, dead-end, or “missing link," please be so kind as to let us know.
  • Lastly, as our patron you help shape our page’s content. Please let us know what you think. Should we do more stuff like this?

7/2/2020 PATCH NOTES (version 1.1):

* Changed the title from "One Night Adventure" to "One Night Adventure: The Party."  I plan to release a series of "One Night Adventures" (much like "Choose Your Own Adventures") so this will help eliminate confusion.

* Made a number of spelling and grammatical corrections.

* Most notably, I have added commissioned cover art courtesy of MonoManiacArt:  https://www.deviantart.com/monomaniacart.  Mono is a friendly chap and super talented, so we hope this will be the first of many collaborations.  (I have also added a jpg sans typesetting below.)
