Chapter 697: First Day Working at the manor

The Shu family had already discussed it. Once Hou Shi returned, they would have a good talk with her and find out the nature of her relationship with the Prefect Magistrate. If she could be of use, they would try to win her and her daughter over. They couldn't let Lu Shu Yu reap all the benefits.

Second Master had a good idea. He believed that after two days, any anger would have dissipated. After all, he was Hou Shi's husband. Did she really think that after being slapped by her husband, she could leave home and never come back?

Back when second Madam manipulated things during her childbirth, he was able to placate her with just a few comforting words. Wasn't she no longer angry?

The Shu family members returned home with their rations and had a simple dinner. Afterward, Shu Feng mentioned their plan to go hunting to the rest of the family.

The Shu family members were very supportive. While they couldn't go hunting themselves, they had seen the benefits of hunting. When Shu Yu used to go hunting, they had meat to eat every day, which was much better than surviving on meager meals.

Not to mention that after Ma Lu and the others received the governor's rewards for killing the giant beast, it greatly stimulated the other physically strong men in Zhengdao Village.

Just in these past two days, there were more than ten people who wanted to change their occupations.

Initially, Shu Feng and Shu Quan wanted to wait and observe for a few more days, but the current situation didn't allow them much time to consider.

Tomorrow morning, they planned to go find the officials and explain the situation.

After finalizing their plans, the Shu family members went to bed early, hoping for a better tomorrow.

However, they had no idea that two big surprises awaited them the next day.

Shu Yu also went to bed early. The next morning, when it was just getting light outside, she had already left the house.

Her current job was to register and distribute items at the estate, so naturally, she had to arrive earlier than the other prisoners.

Fortunately, her tasks weren't too demanding. She only needed to be busy in the morning and evening, and the rest of the time was hers.

She didn't want Grandma to wake up too early to make breakfast for her; it would be too tiring. So she had informed her Grandmother last night that she would finish her morning tasks first and then come home to have a meal and take a nap after everyone had gone to work.

In the afternoon, she could leisurely go to the estate after having lunch.

Actually, it wouldn't have mattered if she didn't go in the afternoon. However, Shu Yu had seen the messy account books of the person who had been in charge before her. Since she had taken over the task, she needed to reorganize everything and create a proper ledger to make future searches and references easier.

At this moment, the sky was still gloomy, and there were hardly any people in the village. But there were signs of activity coming from several households, and occasionally, smoke could be seen rising from rooftops, indicating that breakfast was being prepared.

It didn't take long for Shu Yu to arrive at the estate. Wang Changdong greeted her with a yawn and a smile.

"Miss Lu, how have these past two days been for you?"

Shu Yu took out a package of pastries and placed them on a plate. She said to the officials present, "It's been good. I had two days off and feel refreshed. These are pastries I bought in the county town. They're not anything valuable, but since it's early in the morning and nobody has had breakfast, feel free to have a pastry to fill your stomachs."

The habit of having breakfast at the estate was similar to what Shu Yu had expected. It was common to wait until they finished their busy tasks before having a meal, as eating too early would lead to hunger later on.

Wang Changdong liked Shu Yu's manner and didn't hesitate to take one and start eating.

"Mmm, not bad. It's delicious."

The others followed suit and then thanked Shu Yu.

She smiled and went into the adjacent room, taking out pen, ink, paper, and inkstone.
