Chapter 698: Meeting an Acquaintance

It didn't take long before the bustling sounds came from outside the estate. The people who were going to work in the wasteland had started to arrive one by one. They stood outside the gate, enduring the cold weather. Many of them were dressed lightly and could only rub their hands together and stamp their feet, hoping to warm themselves up before heading to the fields.

Shu Yu dragged the table from behind the gate to the front and sat behind it. She addressed the people outside, "Line up one by one, don't push and shove."

The crowd maintained good order, and no one dared to cause trouble at this time.

The people at the front of the line didn't recognize Shu Yu, but the sudden change of the person handling the registration surprised them.

Shu Yu asked for their names and checked them off in the order they arrived.

The original registration book was indeed a mess. With so many names, there was no sense of organization whatsoever. No wonder it took so long each time to complete the registration. In the afternoon, she would have to reorganize everything, sorting the names alphabetically by the initials of their surnames. This way, when someone mentioned their name, she could quickly flip to that page and find the information.

Ideally, it would have been better to have the prisoners queue up according to their surnames. However, some arrived early, and some arrived late, so there were many uncontrollable factors. The people who had been registered previously had already given up.

Another option was for Shu Yu to call out the names one by one for the individuals to sign, but with so many people, it would strain her voice without a microphone.

Fortunately, most of the people who came were with their families, so it was relatively convenient to find them according to their family units.

Shu Yu kept her head down, ticking off the names one by one.

"Xu Zhensheng."

Suddenly, a childish voice rang out from the front.

Shu Yu raised her head abruptly and indeed saw the family of three who had been in the same team with her when they first came to the wasteland standing in front of the table.

When the family of three saw her, they also froze.

"Miss Lu?" Lin Shi looked astonished. "What are you doing here? Weren't you going hunting in the mountains?"

"Long time no see," Shu Yu smiled. "I'm now in charge of registration and food distribution."

She found the names of the Xu family members, checked them off, and then reached into her pocket, taking out two candies and handing them to Xu Zhensheng. "Here, something sweet for you."

Xu Zhensheng glanced at Lin Shi, whose expression was complicated.

This was too strange. Wasn't Miss Lu recently exiled here? How did she become the person in charge of registering and distributing food at the estate?

But he still nodded and accepted the candy.

Shu Yu nodded and called out to the person behind them, "Next."

The Xu family went to collect their tools and then walked away.

In a hushed voice, Lin Shi said, "Tell me, how did Miss Lu manage to do this? She's quite remarkable."

Xu Dali thought for a moment. "Didn't we hear a few days ago that the hunting team went deep into the mountains and killed a giant beast? It happened to coincide with the magistrate's visit, and he promised rewards to the hunters. Miss Lu was one of them, so maybe that's the reason."

"But didn't Ma Lu and the others say that Miss Lu received the same reward as them?" Lin Shi asked.

Xu Dali suddenly smiled.

"Maybe they deliberately lied about it?" Xu Dali suggested with a smile.

Lin Shi was taken aback. Why would they lie about it? What was the point?

However, the fact that Miss Lu had become the person in charge at the estate was beneficial to them. At the very least, she had a good temperament and wouldn't unnecessarily make things difficult for people like the other administrators. Moreover, considering their previous acquaintance, it was evident that she was a kind-hearted person who cherished old friendships, as seen in how skillfully she handed candies to their son.

They continued to observe the registration process, curious about how Miss Lu managed to obtain her current position.
