Age alone is not sufficient to elevate a Vampire to Elder status. The exact method is a closely guarded secret but it is believed that the process involves a frightening number of living souls, the blood of an Ancient One, and a century of undisturbed hibernation to complete the process. Failure at any point destroys the Vampire in question but the power at stake is worth the risk to some and for others, it is worth any risk to prevent a new Elder from being "born." Most Elders spend much of their time Shapeshifted into their human form which takes on the appearance of their original body at whatever age they choose. They use this trick to make it more impactful when they reveal their full form to an enemy.
