So I'm a fan of this series, I think its very entertaining and the writing is good, especially in the cultivation genre where you often find a lot of garbage. But I do have a complaint. Namely this: " She was a valuable ally, but she'd be angry if he tried to take advantage, so he resolved to only rely on her friendship in a truly dangerous situation." Is that really how Rick thinks friendship works? There's more to it than a transactional nature. And I can't quite tell if that's a writing issue or a character flaw.

Rick is very stubborn about asking for help and his extended family hasn't given him the best grounding in relationships.

Yeah, but it seems to be more than that. Rick seems stubborn about doing the work of relationships at all. Its not even that he won't ask for help, but he either sees his presence at all as some kind of imposition, or places the friends part of friendship (like with how he's been treating Lisa in this chapter) in such a secondary position as to be forgotten. I know that that part of life is pretty mundane to be writing about, butt i I don't see a lot of it going on in the background either. I can't help but wonder how many relationships he has that are going to end up like Tom. Where Rick isn't close enough to a person and so feels he can't even reach out for advice much less help.

She said to find and report an anomaly. Does that mean that the marbles are some sort of communication device to report the anomaly? Or are they supposed to aid in finding an anomaly so they do not have to continuously run that technique?

Hmm, I'm not sure how satisfying you'll find this book, but I will say that my intent is to put Rick on a path toward more relationships. In the first book he was almost completely isolated, surrounded by liabilities and hostile allies. He doesn't entirely turn around in this book, but he'll become less isolated and rely on others during the finale.

I've been meaning to ask why the stats page appears to list the same thing twice: lucrim_generation = gross_lucrim effective_rate = net_lucrim If they are always the same, why give the same thing by two different names in the table?

That's because the base profile and the portfolio are separate tables, originally listed separately. Now that they're usually shown together, those parts are redundant, yes.
