Half in the Bag: Borderlands

Eli Roth made a boom boom. Mike and Jay talks about Borderlands. What a misfire! Odd casting choices. No one want to make. Adult professionals pretend to "care" about characters in video game they never hear of so they can make a check to pay for their yachts and shrimp. The behind the scenes interviews where these clowns pretend to care might be the most cringe rizz eva. Jayme Loins Curtis (daughter of Bill Curtis son of King Arthur of Legend) is so old even Michael Myers is too old to kill her. Even Activa won't eat her old gut rot. She pretends to love and care about her character, Rizzo McPizzo but don't give none shits. Her net worth is 197 million dollars. Why she even work anymore? Just be grandma and let others have roles. Poor Cate Beckenblachett. Is it that hard to find good project? Tar 2: Back to the Tar Pits? You're much better than to play Ronald McDonald's sister. Kevin Hart like cash. We all know that. He sell out super bowl to tell jokes to audience of mongoloid farmers and city-folk who laugh at man on stage. He take role for cash and babbles about how he's learned so much and loved working with other actors, blah blah blah. Hart has over 500 million dollars in his bank now. Little girl who play Tiny Tim cry when she sees Rotten Tomato score. "Am I rotten?" she asks her mommy and daddy. Did I ruin the movie? No. EVERYONE ruin the movie. Especially Eli Roth. Craig Mazin said, "Take my name out you're fucking mouth!" before he slapped this film on live TV. Eli Roth left the set in a jet pack when the filming was done. The second he called action for the first time he realized it was a horrible mistake to cast numerous old ladies in the film who players of this game have never ever heard of. Should have made the cast of TikTok stars or YouTubers like the clown MrBeast. "What have I done?" he say! I ruined the legacy of this game no one has ever heard of! Whoopsie! Off to shoot Thanksgiving. Maybe making this film was a bad dream? Maybe they fix it in post. Doesn't appear to be so. This movie cost 110 million dollars to make. Sad to think that you could have made 110, one million dollar movies. So many interesting stories and ideas and Borderlands is a result of the old school Hollywood bloat and dinosaur thinking. You could have made 200 million dollars uploading a video to YouTube called "I tried all the fast foods and guess which one made me shit the most" so many people would have watched that. I'd watch that. End the madness. Art is dead.

As a huge fan of the game franchise..I cant wait to watch this lmfao. I hope Rich or Jack are in it to give some insight since they’re gamers.

David Keefner

this is the closest I plan on getting to actually watching the movie

This is the best Guardians of the Galaxy sequel I've ever seen! Chris Pratt has never looked better. The red wig is a weird choice though.

Congrats on being one of the few who have seen this movie! That's amazing! Wow! Can I haves your autrogaphs? Pleez?

Well, let me tell you one thing... "Madame Web" is anything BUT generically bad. It is "Battlefield Earth"-bad... Everybody should check it out on Netflix.

Adam Atom Ant

I had no idea Eli Roth was involved with this at all. I expected better from him than 7% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Adam Atom Ant

RELEASE THE ROTH CUT!!!

Marco Cabibbo

I already dislike the games, can't wait to hear what you guys have to say about the movie.

2Dumb4College

Can’t wait for video game nerd, Rich Evans, to chime in & say what the movie did wrong compared to the game.

Bill Wilson

Don't know if you watched the video in its entirety, but they do acknowledge that newer adaptations like "The last of us" and "Fallout" managed to get mainstream in terms of quality and production. On the other hand, they also recognise that many games are basically interactive movies, especially when it comes to writing. The movie discussed is bad for reasons having nothing to do with it being a video game adaptation.

GirouxFan

I guess Cate Blanchett was intrigued by the idea to play an action movie character for once. Just for the fun of it. They probably showed her Guardians of the Galaxy and said "Wouldn't it be fun to do that?". This movie is like Jazz music. Everyone involved probably had way more fun than anyone in the audience.

Bill Wilson

Kevin Hart should get into politics and/or the Newhart reboot. He's a guy who has a narrative which is attached to an agenda of good. Next time, just stick to the "dynamic character" narrative and gain 2% on RT.

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

Awwww shit time to get drunk! Wait I'm already drunk. Time to get drunker! Wait I was planning on that too. Well I'll post again once I black out and forget about this comment!

Tom McGraw

can't wait to hear this one!

I played the first Borderlands. I remember thinking it was fine back then. I can't think of any good videogame movies except the recent Mario. The Last of Us series was excellent, regardless of whether you played the game (I played it for a couple of hours when it came out and hated it, so I basically didn't play it). The Fallout show was pretty good as its own thing, but, as a fan of the series, it completely fucked the lore and made a joke out of the world built by the games. Still, very well done show for someone who isn't bothered by or doesn't know that, which was reflected in the reviews. It doesn't seem like critics are panning things just because they're based on games. Mario, TLoU, and Fallout were all highly rated and did extremely well. So, with all the videogame adaptations that have come out over the decades, which ones were actually good aside from those listed? The only other two I can think of are 1992's Street Fighter and then Mortal Kombat soon after, for all the wrong reasons except Raul Julia's insane performance in the former.

Carl Watkins

Eli Roth was a poor choice for this movie. They should have got the people that made Turbo Kid or Psycho Goreman to do Borderlands.

Carl Watkins

In recent interviews she said that the reason she did Borderlands was because they approached her during the COVID lockdown and said yes because she was depressed and wanted to get out of the house 😅

John D

I love video games but I think Borderlands was a poor choice to be made into a film. It's been years since I played either of the first 2 games, but I remember them being pretty thin on plot. You could say the same for League of Legends/Arcane(which was fantastic), but even the setting for Borderlands isn't that interesting or novel. That's before you even get into the director being out of his element and the miscasting. This is what happens when an studio executive sees some piece of media (comic book, novel, game, etc.) sell 10s of millions of copies and wants a piece of the pie without understanding what made that media successful in the first place or how it could be successfully adapted for film.

DonMac

I'm not much of a gamer but I did play Telltale Games' standalone videogame 'Tales From The Borderlands' (a choose-your-adventure type game so easy even Mike could play it) and so I was familiar with the world of this movie going in. And while watching it, I kept thinking about how that game had a much better and more compelling plot than this movie. Still, I thought this movie was better than 'Madame Web' and light-years better than 'The Exorcist Believer' so it's not the worst recent movie. It actually seemed so much like a Made-For-NetFlix movie that it should've premiered there.

Zoran Basic

Odd that they didn't mention Five Nights at Freddy's and compared it to this

THE_GnomeChomskee

When they revealed the casting my joke was: so what’s next: Benedict Cumberbatch and Anthony Hopkins in the Fast and the Furious?

Tadeo D'Oria

The worse part of how generic and unoriginal this movie looks, is that one of the main reasons why the original Borderlands was such a success was its unique art style, and they didn't even try to emulate that look.

Clancy Bundy

They must’ve thought Hela was lightning that could strike twice.

CriscoDiscoDuck

I forgot this dumb movie was being made.

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

Holy shit your profile pic is from the TNG cats book right?!? I have that on my coffee table! It's my favorite thing. I text my friends pictures from it all the time. During final exams I always text Worf cat jumping into battle shouting "today is a good day to die!"

Not to be a "WELL AKCHUALLY" nerd here, but "Lilith" was actually a kind of ancient Mesopotamian entity/legend that existed before Christianity. ReligionForBreakfast has a great video about it on YouTube. "It's called The Origins of Lilith". *retreats back into my mom's basement*

Marvin Falz

I believe Lilith Sternin-Crane (recurring character in Cheers and Frasier) was named after Lilith the night-demon.

Marvin Falz

Lilith being Adam's first wife is Jewish lore. Lilith is mentioned in the Christian Bible in the prophets. I think it's kind of like with the giants in Genesis. They're only mentioned in a sentence or two but ultimately not really important to the whole story. Oh my, Lilith just whispered in my ear we need a multiple movie story-arc of Lilith: Super Hero Demon. And it's not even night where I am! *metallic horror screech*

I feel like Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis are iconically gay women crushes. So maybe that’s what they were going for. I’ll end up watching it on streaming next week. I’ll just watch the mash ups of Cate Blanchett talking about how much she hates leaf blowers until then.

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

Sorry, I see how that was ambiguous at the time. It was more of a "fuck yeah" than an "oh, shit..." I hope we can agree that the original Street Fighter was amazingly campy :)

Carl Watkins

It was such a good flick. It was weird and edgy, but still had substance and heart. I used to break it out at parties without telling people anything about it and the reactions were always priceless. It was fun to watch people go from "wtf is this is" to "that was a great movie!" over the course of a couple hours 😅

I almost saw this movie on $8 Tuesday’s but after watching the review I decided to pass. Also, appreciate the subtle support for Lakefront Brewing. They’re not amazing but still do good stuff.

TheSingingBush

I only know Lilith from the documentary True Blood and the carpet definitely matched the pubes

Timothy Liebe

Yeah...BORDERLANDS looks really generic and by-the-numbers, not at all as smart, clever, or feminist as Blanchett, Curtis, and Roth allege it is. While I can't blame Cate Blanchett for going for the dollars (while TAR might have been a big awards play, I doubt it did much for her bank account), I can think of a number of characters she'd have better luck with both creatively and commercially if she played them.

andrew

I played and finished this game in 2009 (I think). But all I can recall is Claptrap and the color-associated rarity of the weapon drops. I recall that orange was the rarest. Or maybe not. Oh well.

Manuel Johnen

"Oh my, Lilith just whispered in my ear we need a multiple movie story-arc of Lilith: Super Hero Demon." They tried something like that for TV with "Darklight" in 2004. It was awful.
