 **FIRE AND BRIMSTONE HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

Wow, we jump back into the anime after a year and a half and things get just DOWNRIGHT HORRIFIC. I laughed, I cried, I raged at Eren. Twas a fun experience. jumping back into the anime! What more could we want?

NOTE: I was VERY critical of Eren in this episode special - I realize I was very fired up -- probably because of Hange (TOO SOON?! *sobs*) -- but I hope you all can understand that my fire is because I care...but yeah, I was mad at Eren.

Don't worry, next week, I'll be much more chill...for a twice as long discussion. I had to be. Enjoy my rage! DEDICATE YOUR HEARTS!

I'm curious if you'll also react to the visuals released for the new openings and endings, and also if you will listen to the full versions of the songs with lyrics. Anyway, long discussions, yey!

Yes! I'm going to do that in the final Recap, Review, and RIP at the end of December, but I will get to them! Thanks for the comment and kind words!

And we're finally here. Splendid reaction and discussion, I enjoyed every second. I wonder what that translation was though, the ones on Crunchy are different. Mostly just details though; the big picture is the same, but they don't quite nail every callback etc and may be a bit awkward in parts. Hope the second special has official translations, I've seen a fanmade one in another reaction and that one isn't bad but also not as good as the official one I think (which also has minor issues...). I think Eren may be one of my favorite characters in fiction, because he is written so well and in such a boundlessly interesting yet also simple way, but your anger is 100% justified and it's cathertic to hear it. That baka definitely deserved, and needed, a good talking to. What a great episode this was. Isayama really builds on everything perfectly, what a fury of callbacks and payoffs that hit just right. I can still remember reading the chapter that this opens with (obvs not going to spoil the differences, if any), what a crazy experience that was. I was almost dissociating and doubting whether I was actually reading this or somehow dreaming or hallucinating it. Still probably my favorite chapter in any manga. How Isayama writes the deepest friendship and respect: "Give up on your dreams and die." How Isayama writes romance: "I've killed a lot of people. Even civilians and children. I've been a terrible monster for a long time". I love it. (well, the writing, not so much the killing of civilians and children of course...) Oh, you probably realized this by now, but Fort Slava and Fort Salta are not the same. Slava is the one from episode 1 of the final season, Salta is the airship research base. I do confuse them myself when I'm not paying attention, they could have chosen less similar names... Christopher already talked about the titan manifestation thing. Apparently you can gain some of the abilites of titans by eating parts of them, but it's either only a weak effect, or it's not guarenteed whether you will succeed at all, and the Female Titan with its adaptability is the best at doing this. It's a reasonable mechanic that can explain several things about the events that happen in the show, but it does feel a bit shoehorned in, and would be less arbitrary if they had established it before. I think Isayama just doesn't care as much about the details of the mechanics of titan powers as some of us do. Man, I'm hyped to see your take on the finale now. I'm sure I'll have a lot more to say then.

You might also want to check out the interview with Isayama about the ending that the NYT published. It's short, just five questions, but they're really good questions by someone very familiar with the series and its reception, and Yams has interesting answers to them.

What are some points that these subtitles mess up? Personally I prefer them

I'd have to go over it again in detail, but sometimes it just deviated from the actual text in unnecessary ways. Like Armin's line at the end [of his talk with Annie] that talks about the "outside world", but that would be "soto no sekai" (as in the preview for volume 33, "trample the outside world"), Armin actually says "kabe no mukou", "the other side of the walls", which has a symbolism throughout the series that is somewhat lost here, and it's less clear that Armin is speaking strictly metaphorically - there are no walls anymore, so the point is not just to see more of the world, but to get to a place beyond what the walls represent. Or the 'true' in "This is true freedom"; it's just made up, there's no 'true' in "Kore ga jiyuu da". It's of course fine to change things a bit if you need to make it work in a different language, but I don't think it's necessary here at all; the direct translation "This is freedom" works just as well in English and is arguably more effective in its simplicity.

Thank you for the kind words and comment! I've been told the subtitles for the last part are exactly like Crunchyroll's if that helps, but I thought they were okay! :) And yes, Eren is such a frustrating character, but is written so well! And Isayama goes full in on the cruelty of the situation in this. Ohhhhhh, I did NOT realize Salta and Salva were different bases, so THANK YOU for letting me know! I'll make note of that! :) :)
