**HOT BLOODED HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

HOLY COW -- wow, y'all weren't lying when you said that Episode 7 was sandwiched between two GREAT episodes! This "second stage" of the series is NOT messing around! FINALLY, our red-headed "middle child" is HERE! And I love her, already!

Asuka is so fiery - such the opposite of Shinji - and already making a scene! As is Kaji, who I'd find incredibly hot if he wasn't also incredibly SKETCH. Still, the dude has HISTORY with Misato and thank goodness our sweet summer child Shinji can't put two and two together...Holy cow, the action, the mystery, the suspense, possible romance, and humor? This show can keep cranking it up for all I care!

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

(disclaimer: I could be wrong or have incomplete understanding on some of this) I have a couple of notes on this episode. First, we have another Jendo situation :D. In Japanese U and I are often devoiced, which took me a bit to get the hang of, but essentially depending on the dialect the U in Asuka's name is either not pronounced at all or pronounced as a slight pause. Phonetically it comes out as "Aus-Ka" or "Auska" but in the show I think I exclusively hear the latter. Every time you say "Ausueka" it makes me think of an alternative reality southern bell version of Asuka :D which is entirely not your fault. The second note is just a cultural thing I thought you'd find interesting. In Japanese folklore there's the idea of "Red Oni / Blue Oni" which are most represented in a short childrens story (let me know if you want a short summary) but as a thematic element within fiction I find they almost always embody passion and reason. To me Rei and Asuka as they have been presented so far are rather archetypical red oni / blue oni characters. It reminds me of the western idea of the angel and the demon on your shoulder, but less tied to the idea of binary good/evil. It makes me imagine Shinji with a little Rei on his right shoulder and Asuka on his left :D

I find it simpler to think of it as a silent 'u' because Aus-ka is kind of awkard to me but whichever works for each person it ok. P.S. if you mix Blue Oni and Red Oni you get...

@Simon Lemon - Thank you! I'm going to try my best to get it right! Pronunciation is my worst, so bear with me, but I appreciate all the help before I move further! :)

Thank you so much for the help with pronunciation! It's literally my WORST thing (aside from Geography haha), so I will try my best to get it right in future episodes! :) And I love that about the Red/Blue Oni being the shoulder devil/angels for Shinji! That imagery is just perfect! Thank you for that info and the comment!!

@Alex Kornejo -- ahhh, yes, Red plus Blue equals Shinji's purple eva, right? :) (even though Rei's eva is orange, her "color" associated with her is often blue, so I love that)! :)

"The deal we had"? THE DEAL? OMG Nerv what are you trying to do really? At this point I'm more than ready to believe that. according to laws of anime, Ikari senior is trying to create a new human race hybridised with Angels. With that "Adam" thing. Still could be a red herring, though. It's kinda professional interest for me as a linguist, and please don't take my words for any kind of insult, but I've made some notes over watching some anime reactors pronouncing Japanese names (and not only those) and noticed some patterns. English language has a few general rules of pronunciation and seems to rely heavily on diphtongs: ei, ae, ee. Also, it is not really a syllabic language, i.e. you don't pronounce syllables distinctly when learning to read but rather learn the whole word. Japanese (and Russian, for that fact) are very much syllabic languages and tend to spell words syllable by syllable. And every syllable contains only one vowel, no diphtongs, and no consonants at the end except 'n". So, the name Ei, for example, won't sound like "ai", but Eh-ee. You can look at it like this: every vowel is pronounced just like it at the end of the syllable and not in the beginning, so both A in Asuka are "uh" but not "ei", I in Ikari are both "ee", not "ai" and so on. I understand very well it must be pretty confusing when you're not actively trying to remember, please treat my ramblings as a bit of instruction for cases you have time and willpower to research. Another little pointer is that in Japanese, syllables SU and SHI are very often concatenated in speech, vowels just get swallowed, leaving S or SH respectively. So. ''desu" is "DEs", "Asuka" is "Aska". You can still hear them pronounced sometimes as very short vowels, but SU and SHI are rarely full and stressed unless the word begins with them. Shinji is SHInji but Ishikawa won't be iSHIkawa. Also, the struggle for English-speaking people is often with 2nd syllable from the end: their language tells them to put a stress there, but Japanese so rarely does allow that or puts very confusing vowels there.

Oh my gossssh, yesss, There's some seriously sketchy stuff going on with NERV! @_@ And thank you for the clarification -- pronunciation is literally the WORST thing for, even when I study it (fitting I should be discussing shows based in another language then, right?! *nervous laughter*). But I appreciate you going through everything with me -- my brain is hardwired for SAE grammar, so getting into another language fries it sometimes. :) Luckily, I think I have Asuka's name down...or for the most part. :) You'll all have to bear with me, so apologies ahead of time! Thanks for the comment and info!!!
