*Headphone Warning*

This episode went in the OPPOSITE direction I expected; focusing not at ALL on Eren, but instead on Gabi, Falco, and Kaya -- a girl that finally gets a "voice" in this series, and WHAT a voice it is! Isayama may have wanted to have killed Sasha off in Season 2, but her influence seems to have been planned to last all the way until now -- I was stunned by the dialogue that these CHILDREN were having in this episode.

And while the children have a much-needed conversation, the adults of Paradis (specifically Hange) struggle with the "roles" they've been designated to fill...and there's a smell of revolution in the air, as the people of Paradis seem ready to rise up and take on Marley and possibly the world...

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

Isayama has given us many examples of Marleyans who care for Eldians. Not just the Panzer unit with Pieck, but also Magath with the candidates, the gate guards Sasha shot with the candidates, Nicolo with Sasha and her friends. Even the rest of the world outside Marley, which according to Udo treats Eldians even worse than Marley does, has people like Onyankopon, who is religious and believes God wants Eldians to exist. To me, all of this is evidence that Armin's desire for relative peace through diplomacy isn't entirely impossible in this world, although many other AoT fans disagree with me.

Just a note: Nile's wife is Marie, the outer wall is Maria.

“I couldn’t understand. Why, Reiner? Why was my mom eaten by a Titan?” - Eren 4x5 “What … are you saying? What about Udo and Zofia? What about all the people Eren Jaeger killed? - Gabi 4x7 “My mom didn’t kill anyone! Answer me, Mia! Why did my mom have to suffer like that” - Kaya 4x11 It’s amazing with a simple motif that Isayama can portray the almost pointless nature of the cycle of hatred. Once it moves it can’t be stopped. And it just regurgitates the same bullshit over and over. It takes an incredibly strong will to let go of the wheel and reject it. And sadly us humans are not built that way. The large majority of us are ‘Flochs’ and ‘Gabis’. It’s easy for a viewer and outside perspective to judge these characters. But let me ask anyone if you saw the type of shit that Floch saw and miraculously survived or like Gabi who saw her friends literally be crushed to death one after the other that you wouldn’t have hate in your heart for the enemy. And retaliate right back in some way. Without thinking of their perspective. Not everyone can be Armin and not everyone can be Falco. But isn’t that the miracle that Uri spoke of? Just because it’s a miracle to have a communication/understanding with each other does that mean we shouldn’t bother at all? “You believe in violence, do you not? It’s the unavoidable truth of our world.” - Uri 3x10. If violence will always exist than so do people like Armin and Falco who reject it. Reject nihilism. Those type of people will always exist along with the violence of this world. It’s why Mikasa line in 1x7 “This world is cruel and also very beautiful” is one of the most important quotes in the entire story! *sigh* can you tell this is one of my favourite aspects of AOT 😄 Now, this episode really is an underrated gem in this half of the season. I WISH I could put it in my top 5 but this season is too bloody stacked! Even still it’s one of my favourite episodes. You wanted Armin to talk to Gabi and Falco in ep 9 and all I could think was ‘don’t worry another blonde, blue eyed person will talk to them.’ It’s great because Kaya is a better person to talk to them. Similar age helps a lot. And it’s genuis to have the girl that Isayama originally had Sasha die to save in 2x2 actually come back with a stronger message and better storytelling. It’s why I always say to people that you don’t need to plan your story from the beginning for it to be good. It actually can be better for the story to surprise you and guide you in different directions. Having Sasha die in this part of the story instead is genius. As we now have soo many players like Sasha’s dad Mr Braus, Niccollo, Kaya, Gabi who are creating this amazing dynamic and it’s all centred around Sasha. What a great legacy for her character! Now … Floch. I’m gunna say it. I love Floch. He’s almost in my top 10 characters in this story. To be honest it takes a TON for me to hate characters. Particularly well written characters. And Floch is honestly captivating to watch. He’d be a person I cannot stand in real life and he is still an absolute lil shit but I love his character. It is crucial for this story to have the ‘asshole’ character and way too often those type of characters are either poorly written or completely 2 dimensional and Floch is anything but. Everything that has led him to this moment makes complete sense. In his mind this cause needs a devil to get results. He wanted to revive Erwin even while finding him ‘despicable’ and wanting to originally kill him for the deeds that he committed. So of course he’d follow someone like Eren. Who ‘seems’ to have put aside his humanity and become the devil he has always wanted. I’ll leave it here for now but I’ll write more on Floch later as I find his psyche fascinating - Also some small things Your shipper goggles in these episodes do make laugh 😄 bless your heart. I don’t really understand the Eren Historia ship at all to be honest but to each their own. But hey I said most of my peace with my thoughts on Historia pregnancy with last episode. Tbh I never found it weird that Farmhand-kun doesn’t have a solid face at this point 🤷‍♀️ Not 100% but I’m pretty sure that it implies that Hange accepted Zeke’s plan 3 years ago. In ep 9 Hange says so in the court room … by accepting the volunteers help it basically accepts Zeke’s plan. The train scene in ep10 was a year ago then 2 years ago. Eren says he has ‘just over 5 years’ in that episode and we know he only has 4 years left now I think it’s good to point out that Magath has always been proven to be different than other Marleyans. I think it’s clear that he has a bond with the Warriors and the candidates. He was set up to be the highest ranking official by Willy and can choose who is at his ‘round table’. And here we see his ‘table’ in the end credits. He’s known them since children and has in past episodes been open to collaborating with them. And shown concern for all of them. They all have an understanding with each other. Also it’s been shown that Pieck and Galliard really took care of the warrior candidates too and clearly adored them also. To sum it up I love this warrior family/comrades crew. Even Galliard has softened up to Reiner. - Cool things time * At 16:10 in the episode we have Gabi with the pitchfork ready to lunge at Kaya and at 16:10 of 1x6 we have Eren with a makeshift spear ready to lunge at the kidnappers in a very similar frame. Definitely not intended but such a funny coincidence * since you have watched ep 12 I’ll point out that I believe they swapped titles around. Ep 11 called Deceiver actually covers the chapter called Guides and Ep12 is called Guides in the anime and yet covers the chapter called Counterfeit. I’m still not sure why this happened but I think it’s worth you knowing * fandom is pretty sure the horse that attacked Gabi is Shallot. The horse in season 1 that constantly ate survey corps members hair 😂 it’s just headcanon but I love that it could be * the horse bit is funnier in Japanese as Uma means horse and Akuma means devil Long comment is long again but to be honest I fear for the essays I likely will write with future episodes 😄

Be Happy

That might be true, but we can’t deny that it’is all been shut to dust after Willy Tybur fesrival, and the revelations ´ he did. Unfortunately

Nathan Hardy

I loved how one of our 104th heroes made a quick cameo in the stables ... but Jean, why did you have to bite Gabi? 🐴

romaniablack

Hahahahaha, I love the Jean/Horse connections! It's because Gabi shot at him on the airship, of course. This was just revenge. :P

Maia Brodsky

I love how much attention to detail you give to this story, so I figured I'd help to help with those details here and there.

romaniablack

That's true -- the whole first part of season 4 has been to show us that despite the awful situation in Marley, there are decent people there. Magath, Niccolo, the gate guards, etc. And I agree completely -- that's why it's so frustrating -- I love Armin's desire for diplomacy, and it clearly isn't "impossible" (I mean, we've done it in real life, hahaha), but the events happening in the series now are definitely getting in the way of that. And I hate it. 😁

romaniablack

I absolutely agree with you and I know I’ll be bringing it up in future discussions – the fact that Armin and Falco seem to be taking what they’ve learned (especially Falco) and applying it to reject that Nihilism is so important…I do fear for Eren and where his mindset is at this point in the story, but I don’t think that Eren is on the same level as Floch or Gabi at this point. Again, I don’t want to be spoiled, so I’m sure my thoughts are going to keep evolving as we dive deeper into this season, but I love the message that yeah, there is a cycle of violence in this story (and real life), but it’s important to NOT continue it – to try and learn perspective and be like Armin and Falco – I’ll be curious to see how he applies that mindset to this story with where we’re at, though. I agree that it’s GENIUS to have Kaya come back from two seasons and connect in such an interesting way here; and she’s a better voice to speak to them – someone not DIRECTLY tied to the attack on Gabi and Falco’s home. Someone “innocent” of all of that who had no clue what was going on outside the walls. And yeah, this episode is SO good, but you’re 100% correct – “BLOODY STACKED” this season is. And oh, I love giving Floch hell because it’s easy to do so to our Burger King, but he’s fascinating! He’s a “love to loathe” character for me – he does some things (especially in episodes to come) that I’m flabbergasted at, but you know EXACTLY why he’s doing them and where that motivation comes from…he’s going to be fun to talk about the rest of this series, I’m sure. Ha, oh yes, I have shipper goggles on for sure with Eren and Historia. My weakness is revealed, hahaha! But I’m a character-driven person, and I want to like Farmhand-kun…but it’s hard when I don’t even know what he looks like! Maybe, eventually, we’ll see his face. That’s a good point about Hange accepting the plan…hmm…it still reads so odd to me, because she calls Eren out for “sacrificing Historia,” and it sounded in the moment like she wasn’t on board with the plan until after Eren was? That part does confuse me a little. Especially since now, she’s all investigating into Zeke’s plan (which is still not completely “known” it seems). I AM going to bring up the train scene because someone else noted that, too! And that’s a great point about Magath – his table is the warrior crew! I kind of love that! HOLY COW – that moment coincidence with the pitch fork/spear…is WILD. @_@ And I love that about the horse headcanon and the name meaning…so…Jean being the “horse face” an him liking Mikasa, and Akerman, or “Devil…”….coincidence? :P And no need to ever apologize for a long comment! Reacting and Discussing this series is longer than any dissertation I will ever write, so there’s that. 😊 I always appreciate insightful comment and discussions on here – we could talk about this show endlessly, eh? Thanks!

2022-02-15 12:01:02 The ending scene of Kaya always gives me chills. Especially with my favorite ED slowly playing in the background😭My heart! The impact of Sasha ughhhh I know some people feared Sasha's death not having justice as far as her dying so sudden & that was it but you feel her loss throughout. I cried so much after that scene. May she rest. The scene of Gabi & Kaya with Falco telling the truth of what happened omg what a scene. I was like YEESSSSS!! TELL HER KAYA!! Lol I know I dislike Gabi but she's just yelling what the Marleyans have been brainwashing the Eldians to do. So while she's insulting Eldians & wants them dead she's also talking down to herself because that's how Marley sees them. Even if she is a Warrior. This is why I say she's Eren & Reiner in one because she has Eren's fighting spirit. Reiner grew up with this mentality too before he learned the truth but overall Gabi is her own character. It's sad & it doesn't help that they nail it in the coffin with them going to Sasha's place lol WHY?!😭💀Louise saluting to Mikasa is such an underrated scene. I love that scene so much. The impact Sasha & Mikasa have on Louise & Kaya is so special. It's one of those scenes that just make my heart heavy & light at the same time. It's just so powerful & it reminds me of Erwin, Levi, the scouts & the impact they all have on the future generation as well as our characters & how far they've come in this fight since Season 1. That salute just holds so much as she's in the cell like a bird cage but still hanging onto that hope for freedom that Mikasa gave her & has now taken it away.

I think when you say that you are character driven person I totally agree with you. It’s why I gravitate to your reactions and others like you who are more interested in the themes and characters. But I will say not everyone needs a ‘character’. Some things are just for plot. And that’s not a bad thing in writing. In fact trying to give everyone depth or a backstory just doesn’t work. It makes it messy. Sometimes you create characters just to build a world. You need side characters who have had their arc finish already and you need characters who are there for plot or just to flesh out the world and that’s their function. It’s a slight tangent but I have these kind of discussion with people in the fandom who whine about things like this ‘Isayama dropped this character ’ and so on when either it was never an intention to make them a character or their story is basically complete and it’s the endgame so tough. *sigh* 😄 sometimes fandom can be exhausting can’t it?

romaniablack

I agree about Louise saluting Mikasa -- it's interesting seeing how much Mikasa influenced this girl and then it connecting to Kaya's influence from Sasha! And the idea that she's holding onto the freedom Mikasa gave and took away?! BRILLIANT! I love that concept! The birdcage metaphor keeps going on and on, doesn't it?! @_@ And yeah, Kaya giving Gabi a "dose of reality" was SUCH a scene! It's been a long time coming this season and I love that another child, like Gabi, is the one to tell her and it being the girl that SASHA saved...ugh...Isayama....what a madman, right?! Thanks for the comment!

This episode may be one of my favourites this season. I like the focus on Gabi. How she slowly starts to realize that what they've been tought isn't true. But also how she doesn't want to believe that the Eldian's aren't devils because that would mean her whole life was a lie. I love that we got both get some focus on Kaya and Louise. And how interesting it is how they got influenced by Sasha and Mikasa. The ending scene with Kaya always gives me chills. The parallel between her asking Gabi about why her mother had to die like that and how Gabi wants to know why Udo and Zofia had to die like that. It's an amazing scene. I think Jean is now 190 cm tall. He really grew up. I didn't noticed that with Falco holding the pitchfork like a gun. That's a really good detail. Wish you a wonderful day!!

romaniablack

Yes, I agree it's important that Gabi is realizing that everything she thought she knew (finally) might not be entirely true and that things are much more complicated than she once believed...it comes at the cost of her learning that she's been living a lie, but at this point in the series, I think she needs to know that! The focus on Kaya and Louise is fascinating, too, especially with how they've been influenced by the women of the 104th; and YES! The parallels of Kaya and Gabi trying to rationalize the death of their friends and family -- *chef's kiss to Isayama* And our King is a tall King! I LOVE IT! <3 Thanks for the kind words and have a wonderful day, too!

romaniablack

Oh thanks! Yeah, I can forgive some wonky plot elements for the sake of better characters, if that makes sense. But yeah, you need both round and flat characters in good series; you don't want to get it too all over the place. :) I don't feel there's been "dropped" characters in AOT -- everyone's had a good purpose in the story so far. The only character I'm staring at intently is Annie, hahahaha, but she's been a crystal landmine for three seasons...I will trust in Isayama, though. And HA! Fandom? Exhausting? IN AOT?! Nah. :)
