 *CLOUDY AND FLYING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

To go along with my review of the Unico series, I'm doing reactions of the trilogy that Tezuka created, starting with this 1979 OVA: "Black Cloud & White Feathers!"

This was everything I could want out of a 1979 animated short: Chaos, manic exposition, destruction, and darkness...wait, this is about a cute happy-granting unicorn, right?

As I’ve gotten older, I have gotten more radical in my world view. Although I have to live in our own dystopian hellscape, this really had me pumped! I am here for anti-capitalist Unico! Personally I have always been attracted to dystopian stories, even as a child. Maybe because of the Cold War? Sanrio: I used to work for them. As a result I have a lot of merch! 😅 I only learned of their anime a lot later on, when I left the company. One other title that is dark as well is Chirin Bell. I looked at the Wiki and it described it as drama, dark fantasy…. And I’d have to agree! Both Chirin and Unico have that Berserk vibe to them…. Or is it the other way around! Sanrio really tackling the tough stuff! It’s current hard hitting anime is Aggretsuko. I have not watched it as I’m more of a manga reader, but I need to rectify this and watch it! Unico gets kidnapped by a butterfly…. Seems familiar…. I enjoyed this reaction a lot! When I was a kid, the story that we had ( early 70’s) was about a boy named Oblio, who didn’t have a point! That was very a very psychedelic cartoon. It’s a great story about being different and finding your purpose in the world. I saw this when I was 3 or 4 and it has been with me my whole life. I feel that I must pass this piece of old animation on to the youth! One of my favorite songs from the movie: Think about your troubles from The Point by Harry Nilsson https://youtu.be/guqFqcV4Po0?si=1_FrxEqWnqI-XKPW. Enjoy! And I can’t wait for next week!

I’m all for anti-capitalist Unico as well and I can so see that as the reason for getting more into dystopian stories! YOU WORKED FOR SAN RIO!?! That is really cool! I actually think I remember hearing the title Chirin Bell; interesting! There is a dark fantasy vibe to Unico for real! And yessss, I really like Aggretsuko! I’ve only seen seasons 1 and 2 so far but they’re really good! I recommend! And *coughcoughcough* If there had been a character named Rosine, it’d be pretty on the nose, right? I seriously LOVE the Berserk references…but Tezuka came first, so I guess Miura drew from Unico? 😛 I do love the psychedelic qualities of 70’s/early 80s cartoons – The second movie is SO into that vibe as well, so I can’t wait for you all to see the reaction. And oooh, thank you for sharing this treasure! And for the comment! I appreciate it!

I wonder if Unico didn’t forget his friends each time the West Wind swept him away would he continue to be as positive and optimistic or would he fall into despair as he keeps losing the people he cares about? 😭 That smog too reminded me of the pollution smoke monster from Fern Gully. I can still hear Tim Curry’s voice 😱

THAT is a very good question -- I honestly think (especially having watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica now, but anyway) that it may have been worse for him to keep remembering over and over again those he'd lost. AND YESSSS - watching this, I felt instantly transported to Tim Curry's song in Fern Gully! I'm curious if any of the creators of that movie saw this or were inspired by it? Thank you for the comment and kind words!
