New Resource: "Amatonormativity" by Tara Mooknee & David J Bradley (Patreon)
Content
Hi cutie,
This week, an aromantic patron requested a resource on amatonormativity (the social assumption that exclusive, romantic love is the end goal for every relationship. This term was coined by Elizabeth Brake). So, I present to you this long form video essay by Tara Mooknee (a cultural analysis creator) in collaboration with David J Bradley (an aromantic and asexual creator).
Amatonormativity impacts everyone, including people who seek romantic and sexual monogamy. It assumes that single adults are unhappy or unloveable, that friendships are inherently less important than romantic partners, and that childrearing outside of a nuclear family structure is harmful to the children.
It can also be a reason that people stay in unhealthy relationships, fearing that single life will be even more miserable. Amatonormativity informs laws (e.g. restricting privileges for non-married people) as well as scientific research (e.g. categorizing reluctant divorcees in the same group as voluntarily single people, a lack of nuance that skews the overall statistics of happiness among singles.)
Tara Mooknee is a bit of an odd bird, but her work is well researched and well structured. I binged all of her long form videos this week, and enjoyed every minute. So, consider this resource an invitation to dive down the rabbit hole of her other cultural critiques.

Side note: I also want to thank the patrons who stepped up to support Ukraine this week, and helped me buy Є2600 worth of medical supplies to take to the Poland/Ukraine border. My friend picks them up tomorrow, and will deliver them to Ukrainian medical checkpoints. If you contributed, you may literally save a life.
Sending so much love, and I'll see you soon. 💙💛
