they did not do this movie justice in the promotion department. they were aiming for the kids and it did not work. i so thought "oh this is for pre-schoolers, nothing here for me to enjoy: skip" but it was soooooooo good and fun. much better than the recent tv show. hopefully the sales on digital will be good enough for a sequel cause the box office wasnt.......

Loved the movie, and I don't mean to jump on the hate train of that one dude in the comments, but it has always puzzled me. Why do we, rightly so, have a problem with whitewashing characters (changing the race or skin tone to make the character whiter), but then don't have any problem with changing the skin color or race of a white character? It seems like a blatant double standard. If we hate the one, then we should hate the other, too, right? If not, then why not?

Because studios know that if they make the character a minority or women that they have a built in defense mechanism if people don’t like it, (aka racism, or misogyny) once the race switch happens it’s impossible to not dislike it without being a horrible person and they rely on that discourse to drive up interaction on the internet. Vongola, you assume I know the history of film. I'm familiar with what black face is, but familiarity of what it is reaches the extent of my knowledge. Again, not saying it's a good thing. I've just been perplexed why willingly changing a character's skin tone to be darker or race to be not white ISN'T viewed as a negative IN ADDITION to whitewashing being bad. There being a history of the one being done shouldn't mean the reverse isn't bad as well, right?

Volume plays into it. White kids are not starved for positive representation in media or gaming, but there were (and still honestly are) way fewer POCs in either. Whitewashing a single dark skinned character is very literally a bigger loss than the opposite would be.

You do know that April was originally designed to be black in the Mirage comics right? It wasnt until the 90s cartoon that her race was whitewashed to appeal to a broader American audience. So no, they didnt change her design with the purpose of controversy, we are just doubling back to her original race
