Sayaka's character arc was inspired by the original story of the Little Mermaid, not the Disney bullcrap but the original tragic tale, hence why soo many mermaid symbolism around Sayaka

The end card for this episode always gets me, Kyoko doesn't know how to swim so the art of her diving after an unconscious Sayaka just so she doesn't die alone really says everything about her character. Their natural growth from enemies -> indifference -> partners in death is one of my favorite things about this series.

Kyubey is by far my favourite villain in storytelling. They’re Thanos but somehow even darker. Kyubey doesn’t care about human life not because he’s evil, he LITERALLY does not have the capacity to feel anything. He’s all logic. One magical girl can feed a planet, planet earth feeds the whole universe. It’s the trolley problem taken to the darkest extreme

Kyoko did it for 3 reasons 1. She uses her magic power to try to save Sayaka and make her have not enough mana to win this fight in a normal way 2.Sayaka remind Kyoko herself 3.Kyoko got abandoned by her father so she doesn't want to leave Sayaka alone like that 4. Kyoko does have a hint of romantic feelings toward Sayaka

I'd go out on a limb and say he actually understands quite a bit about human social constructs, but knows that if he gaslights you into thinking it's an unreasonable reaction, the chance of a contract might be salvaged. If he gets what he wants in the end, then everything he said could be a lie, including not understanding human emotion.
