I enjoyed the film for a lot of reasons. The cinematography by Greig Fraser, the score by Michael Giacchino, the acting from nearly everyone across the board, and a surprisingly dark and grimy Gotham. Definitely something "new" and different and well worth a sequel. That being said, I have to say there were some genuine issues as well and it boggles me that no one really talks about them. Chief among them being the overhyped but surprisingly disappointing detective work from Batman (even though it's Year Two, it's still pretty basic shit that he misses and is nowhere near Se7en, which it takes a lot from), the underwhelming plan of the Riddler and his nonsensical twtichstream final act (which should have been cut altogether imho), and a lack of coherent consequences for Penguin, or Batman, for that matter, following both that police headquarters escape and that car chase scene. Matt Reeve's pulled a lot of elements from great comics, like The Long Halloween, No Man's Land, Year One and Year Two, etc. But... none of them came together in a satisfying or wholly coherent way for me. I'll likely get shit on from fellow fans for saying anything negative about this 'masterpiece', but acknowledging flaws helps filmmakers improve their craft and gets us better sequels.

You're mostly right, the presentation was awesome, like you said the direction, the soundtrack everything, it was also well acted for the most part but plot-wise there are some holes in the movie. They created the Batman and Catwoman romance just for the sake of it, there was no build-up and justification for it to happen so soon, I also didn't like the fact that Bruce Wayne was a little too obvious, I get that he's depressed and traumatized but you have been doing this for 2 years now, you need to keep up appearances and not have the same personality as Batman in public, in Batman Begins, starting out Christian Bale is also very serious and antisocial but he eventually learns to keep a different persona and a public image by the time we reach The Dark Knight, although Bale isn't my favourite Batman, I liked that aspect of him more than this one. In my country, it released 1 day before the official US release date and even before then a lot of reviewers had given it extremely high ratings comparing it to the Nolan Trilogy and the Arkham Games so I went in the first premiere day with expectations, they were giving out Batman masks and t shirts and all sorts of things at the theater, it got me even more hyped...but I left a bit disappointed to say the least.

Definitely. I feel a lot of people haven't revisited Nolan's trilogy in a while and have forgotten how well thought out and balanced those films are, especially BB and TDK. Just as likely, however, is that a lot of the people praising this film as the greatest Batman film ever are really young and haven't even seen previous iterations.

Nah, people are saying its the better "Batman" film. Not saying which film is better, even though i like this better. Out of both, this was the better portrayal of batman on screen and the better "Batman" movie. Now it can be argued which is a better film in general.

The only thing I didn't like about the movie was how they did my boy Riddler, other than that I thought it was really damn good especially the cinematography and the soundtrack. At first I didn't like how they race changed Catwoman and Gordon, but Jeffrey Wright did such a damn good job as Gordon that he was probably my favorite actor in the movie, and Zoe Kravitz did a really good job as Catwoman too even though her mask was goofy.

Titans is a rollercoaster of great and terrible. I recommend it, but not for a reaction, cause you'll probably want to fast forward through a lot of the excessive angst that permeates the first two seasons in order to get to the good stuff. Season 3 really toned all that angst down, and I'm hoping season 4 onwards continues the trend of focusing more on the story, characters and action, and less on their interpersonal and personal bullshit. They are better off reacting to Doom Patrol or Pennyworth, but I wouldn't mind them reacting to Titans.

People that didnt like this movie is probably because they came in expecting the usual action packed super hero flick. This movie gives us a take of Batman usually not seen on the big screen, and shows you why he's referred to "the world's greatest detective" in DC

I’m sorry I have to disagree. He didn’t actually solve anything in this film or actually catch Riddler. He followed Riddlers bread crumbs and every victim died. Then Riddler just turned himself in, he didn’t even catch him. The only thing this Batman actually does is stop a mass genocide at the end. But most people will say it’s good because it focuses on tiny details on how he’s imperfect for a year 2 Batman or the camera work. There was honestly no need for this to be 3 hours long

Lol Lupa the reason Origins got so much hate when it first came out was because it was falsely advertised. They promised us a game with a different villain (Black Mask) but all we got was another Joker takeover. Jokers cool and all but it’s not what we were told we would get from all the marketing and media. They hyped up a bunch of assassins and there wasn’t really much to them besides Bane and literally one fight with death stroke that’s just QTE. Copperhead got some shine but not nearly enough for all the advertising. It’s not a bad game by any means but it’s initial success is built upon lies. They just catfished the whole Arkham community

Surprised Roshi liked this since the main point of the movie is Batman's (Yoshi's) approach to crime fighting is ineffective and systemic solutions like social safety nets lead to better outcomes. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but it had its problems. 1) the deadly chase that was predicated on a mistake Batman and Gordon made felt bad. Their incompetence got people killed and it's never addressed. 2) The Riddler was the protagonist of the movie. This is fine but it put the writers in a corner, so they had him target random civilians as his final plan to make him the "bad guy". The problem is the Riddler has been surgical up until this point, so it feels like a betrayal of his motivations. This could have been easily corrected by making the Riddler's plans have more collateral damage earlier to civilians or make his motivations clearer.

There's a major flaw in your criticism. The riddler isn't the protagonist (he murders people, directly.) No one is, it's a movie filled with antagonists and villians, and Batman has to learn to become the protagonist. Gordon is probably the closest one to a protagonist, but he still makes mistakes throughout the entire film. I liked it, it's better than any other Batman movie because RP NAILED playing Batman, and he hadn't quite figured out how to wear his mask as Bruce Wayne.

Here's the thong about it, it's a comic book movie, while this is more realistic than most, it's still a comic book movie, they never said anyone died in that chase scene, also riddler literally had the DA drive a car through a whole crowd of people, and blew him up with a bomb strong enough to hurt or kill anyone around him without armor. Also, fun fact an entire point of batman character, is that until way later in his career when he has alot of help, he doesn't help gotham much, there's only so much one man can do and he doesn't help gothsm all that much, be it as batman because there's too much, or as Bruce because so many people in power are corrupt. And riddler is not the protagonist, the fact you see him as one points out an issue with you more than the movie

What I love about this film as that you can really see how green and human batman still is at this point. Like he's not the unstoppable beast every other film likes to make him. Here he takes hits and makes mistakes. And his tech is still basic. He had a grapple hook, a flare, a camera contact lens, and some basic computer setup. Like he doesn't have Lucius Fox yet either, so he doesn't have the specially crafted cape that let's him glide, but a basic wingsuit that he struggled to use. Next movie, he's gonna get that shark repellent

@Joshua Hoerner: Protagonist doesn't mean good guy or hero, it means the person driving and affecting the plot. Riddler is the one carrying the storyline forward with Batman and Gordon actively helping him carry out his plans. Also, for a majority of the movie, Riddler is an antihero. He's exposing systemic corruption and killing key, corrupt people whose actions have indirectly killed many more. In a system as corrupt as Gotham's there would be no way to get justice and punish the mayor, the commissioner or Falcone. All these actions are morally justifiable, so the writers had to throw in a curveball out of left field that didn't fit the Riddler's motivation. All of this could have fixed in the writer's room.

@Unstablebeast: Sorry bro, this movie is clearly trying to be extremely realistic. Saying “it’s a comic book movie” is a cop out. Yes, a car drove through a crowd of people, and no one got hit. The writers could have done better. Your fun fact is common knowledge and has been a criticism of the character for a while (even Barbara Gordon in Lego Batman calls this out explicitly). The comic book writers realized this and have taken steps to correct this. For example, Bruce Wayne provides the people of Gotham free healthcare (mans is cribbing notes from Bernie Sanders lol). It looks like this film is addressing these issues so I’m looking forward to the sequel. Riddler’s actions are morally justifiable for three fourths of the movie, and he would be an antihero with a POV switch. In a justice system as corrupt as Gotham’s, there is no way you could convict the mayor, the police commissioner, or the most powerful mob boss in this city through this legal system.

That Mayor is dumb ass hell, just wanting Bruce's money and then she wouldnt listen to Gordonl. I kind of wish she would've gotten clapped by the goons. Also Riddler really did what Batman couldnt... he cleaned up the streets of Gotham in two ways. He made a real change. Gave Gotham that Roshi justice. Also I like to head canon that the goons were the other orphans that Edward grew up with.

@Luringposter: nah you're wrong. The protagonist is the leading character - which is batman. He IS the lead. So regardless of personal feelings, he is the protagonist. An antagonist is someone that opposes or is actively hostile to someone, typically against the protagonist. AKA Batman. That is if we're looking at this purely by definitions. If we're looking at what these terms are *typically* associated with (Heroes and Villians in a story). Then it's still Batman vs Riddler. If this were a movie about the Riddler (its not) then he would be the protagonist. This is Batmans story, but he's no hero. He opposes the villains, and the underbelly of gotham, but he's not making real change through 90% of the film. He IS an antagonist. But don't try and put on a pseudo-intellectual cap, pushing your glasses up like "Um, actually The Riddler is the protagonist" cause he's not. He is the villain. He is the antagonist. By all definitions, and accounts.

Im not sure if someone said this already so im sorry if its redundant, but i have a theory: that guy at the Mayor's funeral who said all rich scum deserve the same fate, and then looked at Bruce and asked "hey dont i know you?" or something to that effect... i think thats the guy who killed his parents. It seemed too big of a thing to mean nothing and too little of a thing to be some huge plot point in the next movie. it also comes pretty soon after Falcone says to Bruce "i remember your face". might be wrong though idk
