The German wasn't random. AoT has German-esque settings and cultures. Even a lot of their names are German. Also Roshi he doesn't see them as liabilities. He doesn't want anything to happen to them

Love the reaction, but I got in my feels all over again :'( Also, the OVA actually wasn't that long before the series began. Levi's an adult here, but he's just short af from both living without sunlight (that good Vitamin D) and from malnutrition as a kid.

The show is basically set in an other dimensions Germany. Down to the Eldian treatment mirroring the Jewish plight during the beginning of the holocaust. Not sure why so many anime use loose German architype other major one is Full Metal Alchemist which in one of the movies he literally travelled to a mirror dimension which they were in WW2 Germany.

I personally think the manga did this better, instead of 1 titan it was 5 that took down Farlan and Isabel. Instead of Erwin being some unsympathetic asshole like he was here, he empathizes with Levi and convinces him the common enemy here are the titans and asks Levi to lend him his strength with an epic Erwin speech while Levi's sword is pointed at his neck.

The tragic beauty of the writing in this is amazing. Erwin taught Levi no regrets, Levi taught Eren no regrets using the same words he heard. And in Season 3 Erwin had nothing but regrets, and Levi makes the choice leading to his death. Knowing this backstory makes the final conversion between Levi and Erwin mean so much more.

guys if u go back and watch every time Levi gets a new squad they all get clapped. every season. and it hits every time. like in season 3 when that chick with the red hair got her face blown off by Kenny.

I can never not cry every time I watch this OVA. Levi tried his damndest to protect his friends from harm and the one time he believed in them to handle things themselves was the last time they ever saw each other. Now everytime I rewatch the show and every time Levi loses a comrade I get teary eyed. Constantly having to lose friends and family until you die would fuck anyone up.

"He will meet his...end by my hand" Prophecy told from the beginning as Levi made the choice for him to suicide charge at Beast Titan. Erwin's speech to Levi at the end is the very same style Levi gives to Eren to make his choice when they were chased by "Female Titan".

Dude that ending is so fucking sad seeing Levi like that. And what's fucked up is Levi always wanted to finish the mission alone because he didn't want to lose his friends. He agreed to stay together but when it came to do the mission he went alone and that's the very thing that got them killed. Had they stayed together like they wanted they would have probably lived. Levi blames himself.
