I'm late to reply, but while this theory is super interesting, Sozin already had expansion in mind before the volcanoes erupted, remember? He invaded and colonized earth kingdom land before his friendship with Roku ended. And, he also mentioned that the Fire Nation was living a life of peace and prosperity, and used the excuse of "sharing it with the world". His want to expand and invade was probably more about resources and imperialism. And his entire motivation after Roku was gone was to kill the next Avatar, thats why he hit the Air Nation first.

Tibbers

I just have one question, who snitched? I think that Sozin had spies in the air temples that worked with him way before Aang was born, they must be the ones who taught the firebenders how to tame flying bisons and who the Avatar was, cause how you gonna know the avatar escaped if you killed all air nomads? You would just assume the avatar died among them, it's crazy I rewatched this show 5 times and this is the first time I think about it LOL

Tibbers

And not only the airtemples, they had spies in the southern water tribe as well, it's interesting that we don't hear of any spies in the earth kingdom tho

Mollywopper

Lupa calling zuko a fucking idiot while also completely missing the point is god tier irony lmao

Naledi Biyela

I love that they didn't make Roku and Sozin's conflict so simple, he wasn't instantly jealous of him and he seemed to be a decent prince. But it's clear that Roku's time away from the Fire Nation served him well, because he learned the value of all the nations. While Sozin got a biased Fire Nation education, seeing them as threats and rivals. It reminds me of Moses and Rameses...Rameses didn't belong to himself anymore, his every action dictated the legacy of his reign, which he was insecure about. Moses also belonged to God's cause and saving his own people. It's such good writing, where you understand both sides.

Clarke Smith

Sozin did not get a biased Fire Nation education. He was the one who CREATED and PROMULGATED the ideology within his nation, that the Fire Nation needed to share their "prosperity" with the world, thus creating an education and propaganda of the Fire Nation's might and will.

Clarke Smith

There was always tension, but remember, Sozin was the one who started the war. Sozin and Roku grew up together, and Roku left when he was 16, which means from the age 0-16, we can see that there's no biased fire nation education or propaganda. When Roku came back and had his wedding, Sozin told Roku in secret that they should share their prosperity, which also means that nobody else knew about him wanting to start a war. One thing you got wrong is that only the Fire Nation's military was modeled after Imperial Japan, but the architecture, clothing, culture of the nation outside military were all Chinese. Correct, they felt superior, but that was only because of one man's desire to conquer the world, and coincidentally, that one man was the Fire Lord (Sozin).

Pedro

YES, my favorite episode!!!!!

Anthony Catsup

Sheera is right. The comet genocide happened after Aang left. He even said to Katara in the storm episode that the fire nation attacked his people after he left and he wasn’t able to help them. Sozin wanted to take him out before he became a fully trained Avatar but he didn’t know Aang already left due to his own personal reasons

Kurumi

damn 9 year old me was just amazed at seeing dragons not even caring about the 200 IQ parallels the creator worked so hard on lmao

Marcus Brandon

One of the best episodes fills in info everyone watching and Sheeran is right after aang left that next day I believe was the comet which the fire Lord use to start the war the air nomads were the first strike

Anonymous

The thing with the avatar disappearing is that the people of the world had no idea how Roki died. But they all knew of him, so when Sozin was on his bullshit they assumed he simply disappeared when in reality he died. Then obviously Aang was found 100 years later. So no Aang isn’t the Avatar that disappeared to the world because the world hasn’t even established him as the avatar yet.

Shado

I never noticed the friday night funk beat in the beginning background...dope!!!

Yolo Samurai

Roku didn't vanish. People knew he died, so the intro is talking about Aang. I can definitely see the parallels of it coming from the Roku's side, but I don't think that was the intention of the writers.

Demarquise Wimley

Not gonna lie I loved that discussion you guys had at the end it made me notice things🔥🤙🏽

Cilla W

Been lurking around here. Think I'll add my piece. Aang is the Avatar that disappeared. They've mentioned this many times throughout the series. Think back to season 1 episode "The Storm" where the old man accused Aang of turning his back on the world because he was gone for 100 years. It was no secret that Avatar Roku was dead. Otherwise, everyone would be surprised at discovering that the Avatar is an airbender. However, everyone knew this already. In episode 1 when Katara and Sokka found Aang, Katara asked him if he knew who the Avatar was since he himself was an airbender. Everytime Aang revealed himself to be an airbender, everyone immediately knew he was the Avatar. No one is questioning what happened to Roku. Plus the monks told Aang they knew he was the Avatar from a series of toys he picked out. They wouldn't have been looking for who the Avatar was unless they had already known Roku was dead. Then of course as we know Aang ran away, the Fire Nation attacked the Air Temples with the help of the comet in hopes to kill the new Avatar.

Mten10th

Aang is the Avatar that disappeared. Aang was born the day Roku died. We know he wasn't frozen until he was 12, and we also know he knew nothing about the war. So in the 12 years between Roku's death and Aang freezing himself, of course the world knew Roku was dead. Do you not remember all the people who lived on the island with him and saw him die? Also, how did Aang go from being a baby to immediately being 12 and frozen if Sozin used the comet right away?

Anonymous

Sheera is always right as usual.Lmao Roshi always trying not to agree. Great reaction

Eric Eno-Ibanga

Sozen started the war right after Roku died (Aang was born), but it wasn't a serious case yet. It was when the war started getting really heated that they wanted to start training Aang early at 12 (the Avatear training usually starts at 18) so he can stop Roku eventually. but THEN Aang ran away and THEN the Comet came so Sozen folded the air nation. So it was Aang who disappeared cuz everyone was expecting an Avatar to eventually show up save them from the War that's been happening.

Mten10th

So all the people that lived with Roku on that island forgot they saw him die?

Anonymous

Just go back to the episode when Aang sees his master dead body with a bunch of fire Nation solders, the attack happened after Aang disappeared.

yaboyroshi

Damn yall in here ganging up on me I see how it is 😂🏃🏾‍♂️🚪

Senjioh

I have been waiting for this episode, this is one of the best episodes in the show and now you guys know why.

Haileab Fishastion

One of the best episodes/plot twists. It’s so interesting to watch this as an adult and reanalyze everything

Father Feugo

The Avatar is born right after the previous one dies. Fire Lord Sozin, took some time to plan and awaited for the comet. Which was approximately 12 years when Aang would be announced as the Avatar. After the fact, Sozin set out to the air temples and wiped out each one using Sozins comet. Aang had already left by this time and soon after Sozin attacked the temples. Then Aang froze himself, and because Sozin realized the cycle did not continue, he figured he was still in hiding which is why he set out to look for him for years. Which is also the reaon he looked in the water tribes first because after air would be a waterbender. (wink wink)

BeesKnees

I realized I never even noticed the parallel with the dragons and that dream Zuko had.

Domi

I see both sides tbh. The world didn't know that Avatar Roku died, hince the "he vanished" - but it was assumed that if he WAS dead, the next avatar would be an Air Nomad, so that's what ppl were searching for. Cause, remember, Aang had JUST learned about his identity before he disappeared, so I doubt people knew of his existence/Roku's death beforehand. So, imo they're BOTH the "missing Avatar".

Mr. Toastman

As I'm thinking about it, it is kind of confusing which one they are referring to by "vanished", but I think Sheera made it make sense.

Davon Thomas

Aang wasn't supposed to be announced as the Avatar until he was 16? The Elders had to tell him early because of the Fire Nation started making moves

Davon Thomas

Pretty sure news of the Avatar dying was already made public, considering the Elders at the air temple were monitoring for the avatar since aang was born. Then you take into account the comet didn't arrive until 12 years later and that's when the fire nation made their big move to really kick the 100 year war into action.

Anonymous

None of you are technically wrong since aang and roku are the same person...

Craig Stanley

Just here to point out that in a roundabout way, Aang is Zoku's great grandfather.

SakuraBlossom

Roshi is right. "When the world needed him most, he vanished" is referring to Avatar Roku. Even in the opening title, it literally shows Roku bending the elements then vanishing. The world didn't know that Roku was dead neither did they know about Aang being the Avatar at all. They just saw Sozin making moves towards war and were wondering where Roku was to come stop him. They knew that he was "gone" and IF he were dead, then the new Avatar would be an air nomad. Because he was so young, Aang being the avatar was kept a complete secret by the air nomads until the present time period in the show. He was supposed to publicly take on the mantle of "Avatar" and stand against Sozin but he ran away before that could happen. Of course, modern people of the world assume the Avatar is an air nomad because at this point, 100 years after the fact, everyone assumes that Roku must be dead by now due to old age, so they're looking for an Airbender to be the avatar but, back then, they were still expecting Roku. Truthfully, stopping the war should have never been Aang's responsibility, but he's left cleaning up after Roku's mistake. The comet came 9 months after Aang ran away from the Air Temple and froze himself in ice. It comes every hundred years and it's coming again at the end of summer, 9 months after Aang woke up.

Jerry Ferrell

Just realized that Roku says it was “bitter work” after mastering earth bending which is the name of the episode where Aang starts his earthbending training

Kelsey Brown

The next Avatar is born RIGHT after the last one dies. It just takes time to discover who they are. The only thing that is certain is the order in which they are born to each nation. Fire, Air, Water, then Earth. Since we know the Avatar is born right after the last one dies and Aang was 12 when the fire nation used Sozen's Comet to destroy the air nomads, we can deduce that the comet came 12 years after Roku died. Everyone just assumed that since all of the air benders perished, the avatar must have been with them. Which is why Zuko was searching for the avatar near the southern water tribe. After Aang, the next avatar would be born in the water nation. But since they were never confirmed everyone just assumed that the water nation was hiding them. That also explains why Zuko expected to find an old man at the beginning of the show. Since he thought the last avatar, Aang, died 100 years ago. Hopefully that clears things up. Sorry for the long post.

Anonymous

I think when they say “the avatar vanished” they mean it as the entity. So they’re not necessarily referring to Aang or Roku specifically, they’re just referring to the AVATAR. Does that make sense? Idk lmao loved the video!!!!

SakuraBlossom

Why are you all so certain that Roku's death was public knowledge? In the OP, they show Roku bending the elements then vanishing. If it were referring to Aang, then why would they show Roku instead?

L

Roshi what the fuck is wrong with you??? lmao I thought you figured out that they were talking about Aang long ago. They are specifically talking about Aang. Everyone knows that Roku died on the Volcano Island and they were specifically looking for Aang who disappeared.

SakuraBlossom

Obviously everyone assumes the avatar is an airbender because Roku, if not killed before, would be dead by now of old age and the next avatar in the cycle would be an air nomad. The fire nation knew and attacked because Sozin knew and acted on that knowledge, not necessarily because it was public knowledge.

Devin B

Sozin's comet appears every 100 years so its safe to assume that Sozin went with his plan to wipe out the air temples during the same year that Aang froze himself, probably a couple of months after assuming Aang woke up around the same date he froze himself

itzsheera

I could agree with this point as well. It doesn’t honestly matter in the grand scheme of things 😂

Anonymous

Sheera be hitting everyone with them facts lol

HollowedSlayer

This honestly shows how gifted Aang is, mastering the elements over such a short period as opposed to previous Avatars mastering over years of training.

jesse almonte

I actually cant wait for these uploads, Avatar is by far my favorite series here and we aint even in the real shit yet

Rogeran Stern

Sozen started his March on nation's the next day after the death of Roku, didn't atk the air temples yet, doubt they had the tanks yet nor the power now he folded all air nomads because next one is an air bender did this when the comet came ramp up his power. OK, most ppl knew that roku was dead, didn't how he died doh if they did he wouldn't have needed to tell anng what had happened, it would have been known publicly, avatar is a worldly matter. For the cycle it's air, water, earth, fire, rinse and repeat. Sozin great tactician again use the comet power to folded all air nomads at the same time so no could escape but Aang wasn't there to begin he knew that because the avatar didn't reincarnate into water tribe. If you don't remember much just re-watch key episodes. No need for guessing assumptions it's all in data books all over online, remember only reason why the whole war started is because roku died, the avatar can folded any nations army when he's master all four elements and the avatar state. Also Remember he gets a power up from the comet as well. First time Roku and Aang met he said it was is fault right that Aang his clean up his mess. Probably other things left out but mhmm, opening is taking about both avatar doh mostly Aang obviously both still both.

Rogeran Stern

Aang is a powerful bender obviously but he didn't master anything but air at the time.

Rogeran Stern

Well the discussion is over weather or not the op is about Roku = goku lol or Aang, it's both roku died on island completely covered in harden lava other than sozen and the islanders no one knew he died at the time, and sozen set his war plans in motion the next day, at that time there was no avatar to help anyone because anng is still a baby, now he's 12 anng and the war is escalating, early announcement your the avatar but remember there is a war going so yes everyone soul knew the next avatar is a Airbender but because of the war the air sages told no one who he was. But sozen didn't ramap up the war until the comet came, because remember through all the 3 books aang add friends all over the world even fire Nation, so the war probably was just starting out with small territory companies and the summer when aang was 12 the comet came and couple days before that or months who knows without actual time stamps, anng ran off and sozen folded ppl after the fact.

kurumi Tokisaki

It be the ones closest to you....

PS

OMG this guy calling Zuko dense when this guy couldn't understand Reincarnation

Assimilater

You guys got into a strange argument at the end there lol

Hoodlum JoeBro

Sheera’s correct. Sozin attacked after Aang fled. The whole ‘world needed him most, he vanished’ is for Aang. It can be for Roku too, but it’s intentionally about Aang. Buuuuuut, I’m so sad we’re nearing the episode 10 😭 Everything from then on is pretty much serious business 😭 I’m so hyped!!!

Hoodlum JoeBro

I know right lmao But Sheera being correct was funny enough 😂 Also, dig that pic. Rui gang 😂

Assimilater

The war didn't start until Sozin launched his first strike against the air nomads. Remember the monks said "There are troubling signs. Storm clouds are gathering." I don't think whether it was referring to aang or roku is really critical personally lol. The point is there was no avatar to stop the war

Belt Cedd

Thing I liked most about this episode was that we got to see what Avatar training is supposed to look like. Traveling the world and learning the elements for years instead of months. Poor Aang. 🤣

Joel Braaten

Great episode, and a nice discussion at the end.

Anonymous

Its all good Roshi 😂 though for me I never really looked at it as Roku or Aang being gone. I pictured it more like the entity of the Avatar vanished from the world when they were needed. Though if I had to pick one they were referring to I believe it was Roku

Hbitz

im thinkin the blue and red were forshadowing the decision he made at the end of season 2, legit picking between azula and iroh since that was the two dragons voices, though I guess its the same foundation of this decision too

Abraham

Yeah but Roku could’ve have prevented it if he just ended Sozin or never wasted his time on that volcano and Aang would’ve probably been killed even tho he was an Airbending prodigy so...

Sidney Louis

i think that after roku died, sozen continued his plan to conquer like he had already did to an earth kingdom town. during that time aang was already born and just living his life as a normal kid for 12 years and then when aang realized he was the avatar he ran away and got himself frozen and thats when sozen used the comet's power to wipe out the air temples. during those 12 years, i dont think that the majority of the world knew that roku had died so when sozen started to conquer, the world thought that roku had vanished because he didnt stop it. i think that people just blame aang because he's the "avatar" and when people see aang, the "avatar" they just say where were you 100 years ago when the war started but really it's because roku wasn't there to stop sozen back then to stop the war. there's nothing that aang couldve done at his age to do anything if he didnt run away, he'd probably die like eveyone else.

Rubix

The world doesn't know about the details of how and when Roku died, judging by the gang's reactions when Aang explains. One of the Avatar's roles were to keep peace between nations but when the Fire Nation attacked he never appeared. 'He vanished', as in, there was no news of what exactly happened to Avatar Roku, neither was there news of another Avatar. So during the 100 years the world believed that the Avatar was... gone. Sozin, who knew everything, wanted to be absolute sure that the Avatar was dead since it was his greatest threat and spent the rest of his life looking for him just to be sure. If you remember the full intro in the first episode of Avatar, Katara says "Some believe that the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads and the cycle is broken. But I haven't lost hope. I still believe that somehow, the Avatar will return to save the world"

Cablemonkey

One of the best episodes, probably THE best without a major fight (if you don’t count stopping the eruption as a fight). Getting more hyped every day as we get closer to the end. Also, the most we’ve heard of Iroh’s new voice actor.

Cablemonkey

Speaking of voice actors, there’s a cool voice cameo coming up in a few episodes from a celebrity avatar fan :)

Arsean Wilbon

The intro says when the world needed him most he vanished and it’s roku who vanished. Anng would have probably died had he been around for the attack on the air temples.

Anonymous

I always love how deep this show goes!

Alrick Campbell

When the world needed the AVATAR most, he vanished. I think they were just referring to the avatar in general- During the comet, during the attack at the air temple, during the entire conquest of the fire nation. Remember when one avatar dies, the other one is born. However, since Aang was frozen, he was out of comission. This led people to think the avatar died during the raid of the air temples and that the avatar cycle had ceased since for 100 years, there was no incarnation of the avatar. Roku was missing during the initial fire nation invasion and Aang was missing during the 100 year conquest of the fire nation.

Kamau Catching

Wow this comment section be lit. I got to start voicing my opinion more lol. The reality is Aang is the Avatar that disappeared and it's fairly obvious. I don't want to rehash the argument but the only reason I think they had Roku on the intro is because he was the last fully reyalized Avatar, they wouldn't have been able to showcase an avatars power with an avatar that wasn't fully realize so that's why they chose Roku for the intro. While I'm sure there COULD (the show gives no evidence of this) have been some confusion among other nations or people not in the know about Roku's death... It definitely was widely known and it wasn't a secret. If Iroh that Roku was zuko's great-grandfather then Ursa knew he was her grandfather. Every Nation takes 16 years to tell the avatar they are the avatar so Sozin would have assumed he had at least 16 years so the comet coming in 12 is no issue and would help with the invasion of the world.

Daffy Ducc

Its goes Water, Earth, Fire, Air Hence why the next Avatar Korra was Water. Conquest began after Roku died and it wasn't that bad, until the comet struck, and after all the destruction (mainly the genocide), a real war with the other nations began. After the Comet struck they began conquering the world. The Air nomad temple were the first places they went because they knew it was the next element in the cycle, so the Fire Nation attacked them On the day of with intent to kill the Avatar a younging, thus the Air Nomad genocide happened. Aang was the missing Avatar, because he was never found.. Which stopped no-one from defending the constant Fire Nation raids for 100 years.

SugahSpice

I'm spending 70 dollars on Patreon and your really the only people I'm enjoying ..thank ya'll for these reactions!

Can’t wait for the next drop 😂👌

Book 1 Ep 4 The Warriors of Kyoshi. Suki: "The last avatar was an airbender that disappeared a hundred years ago."

Chris D. Jones

Roshi was having a moment there at the end it’s ok champ happens to the best of us

Bona Fide

hey roshi it's bona fide from youtube! meant it when i said fuck it lol patreon time xD. bouta catch up now

Anonymous

1. Since we know the war was 100 years old and Aang was frozen right before it, he was gone for 100 years. 2. Dying of old age is irrelevant 3. How would everyone know that the Avatar vanished for 100 years, specifically, if it wasn’t public knowledge that the next Avatar was an Air Nomad. I think you’re looking way too deep into that intro when really Katara never mentioned Roku at all, just the Avatar. Roku is shown cuz, yes he was the last known fully formed avatar, still they knew it was an air avatar.

Anonymous

The war is 100 years old meaning it started around the same time Aang was frozen. So it started WITH the airbender attack after Aang left.

Anonymous

How Roku "vanished" but his entire town saw him 1v1 the volcano? You already know Sozin went back to the city like "yea bro died valiantly nothing i coulda done" lol. Aang is the Avatar who nobody found.

Austin Yun

Now you get to twirl your mustache and flex on the peasants like the rest of us

KM

I get chills everytime Iroh tells Zuko who his other great grandfather is, even after seeing this at least 6 times. I love this show. It's always weird going back to season 1 after season 3; it's so much more light-hearted and childish (but not in a bad way).

Anonymous

This is really interesting how it really feels like an anime as I binge it, but it definitely didn't feel like it growing up. Idk if it's bc of all the Nickelodeon bs that surrounded it or just the fact that I'm binging it, but I'm being surprised with the Gaang's progress just like them 🤯

Anonymous

That's amazing wtf. I never knew there was a Cycle between the Elements for the next avatars.

Anonymous

HxH and Konosuba today?

Tophs line asking about friendships always gets me man, damn

Anthony

I’m so ready for the new uploads I refresh every five seconds

Austin D

I think we can all agree that if every episode until the end of the season was uploaded right now, we would all drop everything to watch every reaction in a row.

Anonymous

does anyone know their upload schedule for avatar? (im new here haha)

Therion

@Jerry Ferrell: The way Roku's earthbending teacher laughs in that flashback is very reminiscent of Toph's victorious laugh. Then at the end she asks: "Do you really believe friendships can last over lifetimes?" ... Maybe little hint that reincarnation doesn't include just the Avatar, but that all people have their past lives..

Anonymous

Bruh 4 days, when's the next uploads? .....

Nicholas Haughton

Am I the only one refreshing every 5 minutes lmao?

Anonymous

Check back everyday just waiting to see the next episodes, this show and y’all reactions are just too good🙌🏻

Reign

Not gonna lie I forgot all about zuko being related to avatar roku technically making him related to Ang in general. Shiit forgot all about that shit.

Anonymous

Think back to the Fortune Teller where Aang battled that volcano, and he WON. They were foreshadowing that Aang would redeem Roku way back in Season 1.

Anonymous

The war happened after aang disappeared due to the fact that when he came out of the ice and had no idea about the war. Since we know sozin used the comet to start the war it must have happened after. So it refers to aang since he wasn’t there during the war. As far as sozin searching for the avatar the rest of his life it’s possible since he didn’t know the avatar was aang there’s no way to prove that destroying the temples meant he was dead so he believed he was out there.

Liam D

It was Aang who disappeared. He ran away and got frozen just before the war started, hence the “when the world needed him most”. He wasn’t there to try to stop the war.

Munir

Well it's possible a lot of the world didn't even know Roku died so they just think he dipped.

Anonymous

I can't believe what Toph said at the end about friendships transcending lifetimes became a call back in Korra.

Anonymous

I've heard a theory thrown around that the reason Sozin knew the Avatar wasn't dead was because Sozin expected some kind of power display (aka the Avatar State) from him during the attack-- probably the main reason he brought a whole powered up army. We know that a non fully-realized Avatar can trigger it on emotion alone, not just in self defense, so had Aang been there during the attack, he'd have probably glown up when he saw all his people being slaughtered before his eyes, which of course would have signaled Sozin and his troops as to who the Avatar was. That's what I think he expected to see, but of course that didn't happen at all so he had a hunch it was because the Avatar wasn't there somehow, or managed to slip away.

Anonymous

Well not just that “being the avatar doesn’t hurt your chances with the ladies” Wink wink at a certain girl

rayman

Old vid but I wanted to add I don't think Sozin was the one who even used the comet. It was the next Firelord after him that used its power and named it in honor of Sozin who started the whole Fire Empire expansion.

Anonymous

Breh Roku and Aang disappeared. It's a double entendre. When we needed Roku, he vanished. When we needed Aang, he vanished. Bruuuuuuh.

Anonymous

Nah it was Sozin. He harnessed its power and then it was renamed after him

Anonymous

Sozin did his genozide shit after Aang disappeared, so the intro's about him. No one thought Roku "disappeared" - there were hundreds of people watching him die in the volcano fires. At the point of Sozin's mass murders Roku had been dead for more than 12 years. Nobody expected that dude to be alive again. Avatars dying and being reborn had been happening for generations at that point but one getting uncovered at the age of 12 and then suddenly disappearing, nowhere to be found, was completely exceptional.

Anonymous

Just coming back here to say what the others said. The Air Nomads didn't have some secret avatar for 12 years, people knew he was the one. The avatar has been a constant presence in this world for thousands of years, so while the average person may not be saying "aang vanished", they mean that The Avatar vanished.

John

Lol y'all had a full blown debate for afterthought for a change the. Comments got y'all

cade-carter

only the air nomads knew it was aang tho. Everyone else just knew it was an airbender

Fabbrizio Calamitous

The reason it's confusing is because the intro animation shows us Roku vanishing, so even though the narration doesn't say it was Roku vanishing, that's the image we're left with. And it makes sense, because it's an abbreviation of the pilot intro, where we hadn't met Aang yet. It was Aang that vanished, and everyone knew the Air Nomads had the next Avatar, but the world hadn't met Aang yet. Roku was the last Avatar anyone knew by name. The wording is also meant to imply that everyone thought the Airbenders were all dead, meaning people probably thought the new Avatar had also died, and were waiting for a Water Tribe Avatar to be born (remember how Yue's dad said the Fire Nation uniforms were 85 years old?) Long story short nobody knew enough to know what the fuck was going on with the Avatar at all.

Anonymous

That's sort of right but in the first episode the intro said that people thought that the new avatar never had a chance to be born into the air nomads so the avatar cycle had been broken. Because the avatar never did show up in the water tribe most of the world believed the avatar just didn't exist anymore. But Sozin knew when Roku had died (something most of the world didn't know about) so he knew the avatar was already been born into the air nomads, and so he and the fire nation kept looking for the avatar.

Anonymous

This might've been mentioned already but the reason this is one of my favorite episodes is because of the details. At the beginning when they show young sozin and roku fighting, Sozin comes in to save him from tripping over the tree branch only to drop him and let him fall anyway. Just like what he did to Roku during the volcano. And when they show the scenes of Iroh and Zuko at the end, they show it as if Zuko is always the one behind bars. I always appreciated the use of his scar as symbolism for him but it was always overt. The subtlety in how the portray things here is what makes this show such a masterpiece

SupremeCai

Sheera not only the prediction god she's also noticing shit I never have in my ~10 watches. The blue/red dragon related to Sozin/Roku is so obvious but slipped by me and so many others, this show never stops giving I swear

Anonymous

There are plausible arguments on both sides, but the thing is that “when the world needed him most” isn’t specific enough to pinpoint the exact time. If it was, we can then attribute it to Roku or Aang. As a couple have pointed out, “The Avatar” isn’t one specific person so in many respects it can be both Roku and Aang from a big picture perspective. Also, in a made up story pretty much anything is plausible. Could the people have spread word of Roku’s death? Yes. Could Sozin have captured and/or created a gag order to prevent the knowledge from spreading? Yes as well. We just don’t have enough information to definitively know one way or the other without rationalizing to justify our personal viewpoints.

Anonymous

Big picture aside, “vanished” is from the perspective of the world, so the question would be who is the Avatar from the world’s perspective. The cause for this debate is that in the intro, which was at the very beginning of the show, it’s clear that it is referring to Roku. But now after they have fleshed out the story and we know exactly how Roku died, it is no longer clear as Roku’s death had witnesses. We just don’t know for sure who was the Avatar in the world’s eyes were to specifically say it was Roku or Aang.

And finally, when we first read the title of this episode I bet we first thought that “The Avatar” was referring to Aang. Yet, it was referring to Roku. Just goes to show that unless you know the complete context, “The Avatar” can’t be limited to just one person.

Sozin was on som manifest destiny type ish! Sound familiar?

He waited at least 12 years after Roku died because Aang was 12 when they attacked.

Creed

nah they were attacking all the air temples in every direction. aangs air temple just happened to be the last one.

“As usual” LMAOO right ?? She is always right but her husband always tryna disagree for no reason

Susana Canales

Also, the dragons don’t just represent both sides of Zuko’s ancestry, but the two major influences on his life. Remember Iroh was the red dragon and Azula was the blue dragon. I thought it was intense that, more than his father, his sister was his biggest influence. She represented Fire Lord Sozin and Iroh represented Avatar Roku. Crazy.

Well you actually can figure out when Sozin wiped out the Air Nomads. Taking into account that the Comet shows up every 100 years and it's going to be here by the end of the year and Aang was frozen for 100 years. That means Sozin attacked the temples a year after Aang was frozen.

Natasha Padparadscha

Bruh. And in that year when the world was probably in shambles because the Avatar disappeared, and there was mass panic, the fire nation took their chance and took advantage of the chaos and wiped them out. Fuck

SquirtleBob

With the beginning credits saying 'when the world needed him (the avatar) most, he vanished, it can apply to both Roku and Aang. Roku because when he died, the world needed him when Sozin started the war and when Aang disappeared, the world needed him during the 100 years he was frozen.

Cameron

The intro clearly shows Roku "vanishing". It's meant for both of them.

Eric Demo

Roku's earthbending teacher was actually the original design for what became Toph. They decided to make the character more unique then used the first version as Roku's teacher later. Imagine if Toph was never in the show...

HopelesslyImmersed

I think Roshi had it right. Roku was the one that vanished. I'm guessing the fire nation wiped away any information regarding Roku's death. Sozin must have waited and built his forces until new information came from the air nomads finding the new Avatar, and thats when he launched his attack on the Air Temples. Thats why he sounded so desperate on his last testament, he wanted to kill the new Avatar before the next comet came so that his victory was absolute.

Devon Joseph

Doesn't make sense because the world needed him most when Sozin's comet came which was around the time Aang left and the fire nation attacked his home. I'm sure the people from his village would've spread word that he died fighting the volcano. Also, I'm sure people are used to waiting 16 years for a new Avatar to resurface. Fire Nation couldn't have suppressed the truth for 16 (12) Years while Roku was just MIA. He was also old so I'm sure most people would've assumed he died and the next avatar had been born. After like 18-20 years and the start of the war I'm sure the legend of the avatar disappearing would've spread.

Anthony Longoria

Idk if they figured it out in a later episode but it was Roku who disappeared, in the intro it's Roku who literally disappears when Katara is talking about it. No one but a handful of air nomads knew that Aang was the Avatar. Sozin basically covered up letting Roku die, my guess is because having the Avatar from your own nation against wouldn't be great for moral

Allusive Panda

So by vanishing I believe it means both disappearing (Aang) and dying(Roku) and that’s how I always understood it. When the world needed the avatar most Roku died, and then when the fire nation attacked later and the world was in trouble again Aang disappeared.

Alellion

No, my guy, lol. It's Aang. Roku's death wasn't all that unexpected at all, dude was old af. The world knows that the avatar reincarnates upon death, and at that point Roku had already been dead for 12+ years. Everyone was well aware that the next avatar was about to be chosen again, and that's the expectation that was betrayed, due to Aang's 100 yr. chill sesh.

HybridEclpse

I don't know if someone mentioned this already, but. Anyone ever notices how the next Avatar looks similar to the past Avatar's loved one. For example, Young Aang looks similar to Roku's wife, and Korra looks similar to Katara. So if that's true, the Avatar after Korra would possibly resemble Asami.

Julius

Doesn’t Ozen sound like Scarecrow from Arkham Knight?

Never really thought about this before, and maybe I've been watching too many Pompeii and Krakatoa documentaries, but does anyone think that the Fire Nation became more desperate to expand because it was getting a little inhospitable in the Fire Nation after those two volcanoes erupted. They had never experienced an eruption of this magnitude before and it could be felt from miles and miles away. The aftermath, including storms and drops in temperatures and temporary blockage of the sun could have been possible. This guy went from taking his sweet time through his life, going from Earth Kingdom city to city over the course of decades to taking over whole pieces of continents in years. The comet was probably the first good source of firepower they'd had in decades. Southern Air Temple would have been the best place to hit, since it was the furthest away from the blast without hitting the Southern Water Tribe (who was loving the colder, more icy weather) and still warm enough to have resources. Could just be overthinking it though xD Just saying, like Gyatso said "storm clouds are gathering" Also, I like the nod to Toph in this about friendships transcending more than one lifetime =^~^=
