To gain passage through Hungary, they swore an oath not to destroy anything, but the lack of real leadership for their group became clear when they very quickly started a market brawl, stormed the local citadel, then fled to Belgrade and immediately repeated their aggression by turning on the Byzantine troops sent to keep them in line. At the city of Niŝ, the Byzantine troops pinned them down and slaughtered a quarter of the entire crusading "army." The remainder fled to Constantinople and secured passage into Turkey, but the group fractured from within and became two separate factions, with Peter leading one and a man named Reinald leading the other. Both factions competed for bragging rights, committing horrible atrocities to outdo each other. One group actually managed to siege a castle, but it had no water supply, so they were easily starved out by the Turks. The Turks, however, spread a rumor that this group had actually gone on to capture the capitol city, and the remaining crusaders set out to join what they thought would be a loot extravaganza. Instead, they ran into a Turkish ambush that left only 3,000 of their 20,000 soldiers alive. Now led by Geoffrey Burel, they retreated to Constantinople. ____________ Get the intro music here! http://bit.ly/1EQA5N7 *Music by Demetori: http://bit.ly/1AaJG4H Get the outro music here! http://bit.ly/1NbpIcd __________ Extra History - Byzantine Empire: Justinian and Theodora From Swineherd to Emperor: http://bit.ly/1LYJKFX Extra Credits - Four New Approaches to War Games Returning to WWII: http://bit.ly/1NukEiR

Battle of Cannae: "And thus the First Crusade began." Teutoburg Forest: "And thus the First Crusade began." South Sea Bubble: "And thus the First Crusade began." Nearly any Western Front WW1 offensive: "And thus the First Crusade began." That time on the Apprentice where they tried to buy a Kosher chicken from a Muslim Butcher: "And thus the First Crusade began."

Farzad Mansouri

No matter how many times I watch it I can't help but want to laugh and cry at this absurd beginning to the first crusade.

Anonymous

wow the first crusade was such a total mess, do you even strategy? face palm.

Anonymous

That couldn't have been a much worse mess if they had been TRYING to mess everything up.

Anonymous

So many facepalm-worthy moments.

Michael Waisfeld

I guess i'll put this on my playlist right after the Terry Jones version

Samson

How many episodes are going to be in this series?

Anonymous

Ya gotta wonder how much motivation faith was motivation for these early Crusaders, and how much it was simply trying to get by day to day/looking to make a better life for themselves.

Irall

Well, that definitly make us human look like moron......

Anonymous

I know they have different morals back in the medieval ages, but this whole episode seems to be "the height of stupidity". Like what the hell were they thinking?

Anonymous

...The first Crusade is usually considered to have gone the best out of the bunch, as I recall...

Anonymous

well that was something my history class ignored. At least the crusade is going to be starting now! No more peasants looting towns because they can... I hope

Anonymous

Well that must have been an awkward evening for the pope...

Jason Youngberg

Do we have a number better than "thousands" or "tens of thousands"?

Jason Youngberg

Of course it was ignored. You can't have Christians coming off as the bad guys. That's oppression! That happened in my high school history class. The teacher tried to talk about the slaughter of Jews and several Catholic students objected to how their faith was being "slandered" and how it was all the fault of the Muslims. Since this happened in the 80s with the rise of the Moral Majority, the teacher had to skip that part. The first two videos in this series filled in some of the gaps left behind.

noah

Well that was a total disaster. the lack of training amongst the civilian population seemed to be the cause. Kind of reminds me of mass hysteria. Only with out the panic.

I don't know if James has access to them, but I'm afraid I do not! I wouldn't be surprised if that information exists at the end of a research tunnel, though.

ExtraCredits

Dehumanization of other people and allowing yourself to think of them as "the enemy" rather than *people* has been the unfortunate source of some terrible things. :\

ExtraCredits

It's a good question! There's a ton of debate among historians about the likely motives of the Crusaders.

KvaGram

I can't help but laugh. the ironic humor is just too massive.

Anonymous

It would be funny if it wasn't so sad

paul staber

On the up side the random gang of raiders will have given the Muslims an unreallisticly low expectation for the competency of the real crusaders.

Anonymous

Why, peasants? Why did you do all these horrible things? I understand feeling trapped by your lot and wanting to go an a adventure (read: crusade) to take a break from your daily toil, but .... >_<

Anonymous

Great one, thank you <3 The drawing of the Peter is just absolutely amazing :D
