I lowered the opacity of the bg artificially in the lineart up there to pop out the new guys

Someone asked how I do character designs... mostly I just have a bunch of random thematic designs squirreled away, most of which are trash, but when I like one I might pull it and try and mess with it. I decided on a sketch that looked like the first sketch shown up there and refined it at ECCC (I lost that sketch, bla), but not being sure yet about what my needs for the character were, decided to mod him a bit to push the emotional/ acting aspect. When in doubt, I suggest focusing on that for all the designs you do (and a fun silhouette). The silhouette here is decidedly not fun (read: looks like spiders) and not super easy to read, but I figured that was okay since this entire scene is about communication difficulties.

Back to these guys' designs tho; the defining part of the legs is the right angled joints, but I think I can still make the acting work as long as I draw the feets first, haha. This actually works for drawing human figures too if you're into that sort of trickery.

In general a lot of the acting in this comic is done through body language... Kalla, Mike, and most of the wildlife don't emote very well or at all with their faces. Bex (and, briefly, the other humans at Devotion) do, those weirdos.
