Boy howdy I am not that great at designing caves... gave it my best shot though.

Earlier this month I got to go on vacation for the first time in a very, very long while. Got to take lots of lava refs! This was one of the things I liked looking at a lot:

They were like... upwellings? I guess. Just these bulges, but every once in a while there would be a larger one with a hollow space underneath, so it formed like a stone igloo with a little den inside. I knew that Bex was supposed to be inside an enclosed cave but didn't really know how to make it special/ meaningful (we've already been in quite a few smaller chambers already), but after I saw these igloos I was like oh okay let's scale that shit up 66%, thank you Martian gravity~

Oh yeah my pencils were pretty minimal this time around, since I was trying to just bang out an interesting internal form, so the sketch was more like a mini-painting. I tend to do crappy paintings for sketches where volume is the most important, but for body expression I'll focus on blocking out a black silhouette, and for faces I'll just stick close to the lineart, like in the 4th panel up there.

Just wanted to say that I really like these posts! I always want to ask questions like "What's that stuff?" and "Can she understand him?" But I know I should just be patient and let the comic play out...

Slightly off-topic, but I laughed at your first sentence because I also support Evan Dahm on Patreon, and he has really been on a kick drawing and posting caves lately. They all make me feel slightly different, which sounds weird in regard to a cave drawing, but that's how I feel. ;) They are more a cross-section of the caves, though. ~Jessica
