The original ending of the movie was actually The Average Joe's losing, but it did not do well in test screenings, so they reshot some scenes to provide the traditional happy ending. Ben Stiller alludes to it at the very end of the credits before he does his rendition of the song Milkshake. Additional fun fact, Christine Taylor who played Kate is actually married to Ben Stiller in real life... which made her repulsion to White that much funnier to me.
