Brian Jones

Now THIS is how you do a multiverse movie. Marvel take note.👍

Had to laugh at the beginning when you were wondering what genre it was. I was just thinking, "All of the above." :)

A couple of actors you seemed to miss: I was surprised you never appeared to notice that Deirdre was played by Jamie Lee Curtis. A little less surprising: Waymond was played by Ke Huy Quan, who appeared in The Goonies as Data and most famously Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Also, you are correct: James Hong, Gong Gong, voices Po's father in Kung Fu Panda. He also appeared in Blade Runner as the man in the cooled room who makes the eyes for the Replicants. Someday you will probably see him in the famous John Carpenter action-comedy Big Trouble in Little China. Some fun little things I love most about the movie: The googly eye is a white circle with a black center. The everything bagel is a black circle with a white center. Yin and yang. When Waymond describes the feeling of Jobu Topaki creeping across the multiverse, he says "Your clothes never wear as well the next day. Your hair never falls in quite the same way." He is quoting the early-2000s smash hit "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)" by Nine Days, the lyrics of which loosely line up with the plot of the movie. When Evelyn jumps to other universes, you can hear different versions of the song with lyrics that apply to each universe, all of which were re-recorded by the lead singer of Nine Days for the movie. If you go on YouTube and search "absolutely everything everywhere" you can find a couple of videos uploaded by "bluejay" containing the riffs on the song. Michelle Yeoh is most famous for being a martial arts movie star. She shot to martial arts stardom when she appeared in the Jackie Chan movie Police Story 3, in which, among other things, she drove a motorcycle onto a moving train, for real. She is also very famous for the martial arts drama Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and she appeared in Crazy Rich Asians. When Evelyn transports herself to the "kung fu universe" where she is a martial arts movie star, there is footage of her on the red carpet for Crazy Rich Asians, because the filmmakers modeled that version of Evelyn on Michelle Yeoh. Crazy Rich Asians also factored into Ke Huy Quan being in the movie: it was a huge moment for Asian-American actors in Hollywood. Quan appeared in those famous '80s movies but stepped away from acting after awhile when roles dried up, moving to behind-the-scenes roles. When he saw CRA, he felt a little left out, so he opened himself back up to acting roles and immediately received this script. Now Everything Everywhere All At Once is the word-of-mouth hit of 2022 and everyone is raving about his performance in it.

Just finished. So glad that this is one of your favorites so far and how you appreciate how much went into pulling this off. Just an incomprehensible cinematic achievement and all out masterpiece. Upon second viewing I really think this is one of my all time favorite movies. It feels like it came from my subconscious somehow and I know others feel that way too. Which is beautiful and kind of, in a way, what this movie is about. Whenever I need to feel gratitude, no matter how mundane my life seems to be at the time, I will go back to this movie. Might be my favorite last hour of any movie I have seen. At least in quite some time. Trying to put it all into words how incredible this is, is an automatic disservice. It's a miraculous film. I enjoyed it that much more seeing your reaction to it. Thank you for that Mary. What you do shouldn't go understated. It was very cool to see you experience a new classic like this. Also, there is another film by Daniels (which is two directors named Daniel in case you were wondering lol) called Swiss Army Man. Also another incredibly weird and beautiful film. Danielle Radcliffe from Harry Potter is in it and my absolute favorite role of his. It could be a good one to follow this one up with. It also has Paul Dano who played Riddler in the new The Batman. Again very weird but beautiful film you might be interested in.

You should do a A24/indie films poll!

Other recent arthouse titans: Bad Times at the El Royale, Ex Machina, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. More general recent films: Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Atomic Blonde, and Sicario.

this is the real multiverse of madness, and it brings everything that hits your emotions everywhere, all at once! I was laughing and crying for the last 30min!

Tyler Foster

It's not that recent anymore, but one film that comes to mind that hits some of the same kind of creative and emotional highs of this movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Boo. Seriously, this is good, but so was Dr Strange. They both do it in very different ways; both are valid. Same with, for example, Spiderverse vs No Way Home (although obviously those are easier to compare, both being Spidey movies).

Tyler Foster

I like Doctor Strange, but I do think it falls short as a multiverse movie compared to this. I read a Tweet I couldn't stop thinking about despite liking DS: "Everything Everywhere All At Once gave us so much creativity, and Doctor Strange's idea of an alternate universe is 'you go on red'?"

The Kid Detective (2020) is an excellent recent movie and it’s crime genre. It may be the best movie that came out in 2020.

resinmonkey .

How about a movie produced by the guy who did Avatar. Staring three academy award winners. Directed by the guy who directed "Sin City". That won the Oscar for best visual effects in 2020?

resinmonkey .

Drum roll........ Alita, Battle Angel.

I’m so glad you reacted to this film . I’ve seen it four times now . Twice in the theater . As far as current recommendations are concerned. The movie that won best picture at this years Oscar’s, Coda (2021) . I would highly recommend. But it’s not easy to find . In America it’s only on the Apple TV Plus streaming service. As far as I can tell. If you can find it it’s worth checking out . Also Last Night In Soho is good .
