Watching this movie as an adult, I like it. As a little kid, didn't care for it. I remembered bits and pieces here an there watching this as a kid because this was my mom's favorite movie. The movie is shorter than I remember. I don't know if anyone noticed but Tim Robbins played Merlin. That's how not famous he was back then. lol Eight years years, Tim would come out in Shawshank Redemption with Morgan Freeman. Iceman is definitely gay for Maverick. lol I had no interest in watching this movie again just because I didn't get into it when I was younger, but I'm happy I watched it along your reaction Mary. There were a lot of cringe moments, but it was the 80's. It was a different time. Also your typical Tom Cruise movie where he plays a show off who acts like a hotshot, then something happens that straightens him out to be more wise. Rest in Peace Clarence Gilyard.

Top Gun was cool but Maverick is special in todays day and age. You will love it for its craftsmanship and stubborness to not follow todays washed up filmaking. Tom Cruise is a very questionable Person but his Moviecareer is outstanding. Thanks Mary and all the best.

resinmonkey .

I thought this movie was silly when it came out, and it has not aged well. Consider it your punishment for being a YT reactor.

Now all you need is a helmet that says "Mariverick" when you ride your Vespa. :)

TOP GUN is one of those that I hesitate to consider a "franchise," since until recently it was only one movie. TOP GUN: MAVERICK is what they call a "legacy sequel," which usually means a years-later sequel that involves one or more of the original characters interacting with younger ones, and maybe making some meta commentary on the "legacy" of the original. In this case, I actually think MAVERICK is the better movie. Some other examples: BLADE RUNNER and BLADE RUNNER 2049 TRON and TRON: LEGACY THE HUSTLER and THE COLOR OF MONEY TERMS OF ENDEARMENT and THE EVENING STAR THE WIZARD OF OZ and RETURN TO OZ (okay that one barely counts, but I just really like RETURN) There's also TERMINATOR 1 & 2, which are really the only ones in that franchise you'd need to worry about. :)

Now you have to watch Hot Shots!

Have to say - never watched it before I saw MAVERICK in the theater. I watched the original TOP GUN the day after and I have to admit; i found it incredibly boring and bland. I assume this one largely lives on the nostalgia of fans who watched it as kids and/or "back when". Probably would have liked it too as a kid but now, as an adult ... phew! YMS did a great short review on it on YT and nailed every single point perfectly IMHO.

Strong disagree. It's not exactly my type of movie, but I think it's a very good version of the type of movie it is: excellent soundtrack, Tom Cruise is a weird motherfucker but a compelling actor and he had romantic chemistry with his female co-star for once, the relationship between Maverick and Goose is iconic, Meg fucking Ryan comes in to sell her relationship with Goose (they don't get a lot of screen time, but - not surprisingly - they nailed it)... Maverick grew as a character despite - because of? - not coming in 1st place. It's a fun action movie with an iconic soundtrack that doesn't take itself too seriously but has a heart... you could do a lot worse.

Mary your work is easy on this one. I know you find it hard to believe, but there are only two Top Gun movies. This one, which came out in 1986 and it's sequel, Top Gun Maverick which came out this year. So you are all caught up, lol. And yes you want to see Maverick, it is the better movie. You are right, this isn't an amazing story or has great acting, it's just a fun movie. And its one I haven't seen over and over again, I've only seen it maybe five times over all these years, but I enjoyed it the most this time watching with you. And that includes the first time in the theater when it came out, I had an amazing date who I took to see this movie, the date was better than the movie. And that's all I'll say about that.

And a bumper sticker saying "I feel the need . . . the need for speed." Or a good pun but I couldn't think of one in the moment.

Aniket

oh yeah I felt the same way today. Was my first time watching and I just shut it off after 15-20 minutes. I agree with you that I'd have probably loved it if I saw it when it came out/as a kid... but now seemed dated to me. I really want to watch Maverick. Will I miss too much because of not watching the first one? Or can I just go in blind for Maverick?

olly.enn

Go in blind, it's totally fine. That's what I did. All you need to know is explained in flashbacks. Sure you'll probably miss a few nods to the first movie but nothing of importance.

Great reaction as always. Yes, Top Gun is cheese, but it's the best of 80's cheese. If you had a dime for every kid that wanted to be a pilot after seeing this film, you'd be a millionaire, and at the time of it's release it was a phenomenon. :) Navy recruitment actually spiked after the film came out. While it was limited for what it could do at the time, and most of the film is green screen or RC model work, it's still a truly fun film to watch even now. There are only 2 Top Gun films. The original and Top Gun: Maverick. The sequel is absolutely amazing and a must see, and a better film than the original. It's a true love letter to aviation and a dying breed of fighter pilots. Cruise and team really outdid themselves with it, and I almost wish you had had the opportunity to see it in theaters as the sound design and aerial cinematography are pretty mind-blowing. On the IMAX screen it was an amazing sight.

TinCan Cosmanaut

For sure strong disagree. This movie aged incredibly well. Pacing, music, all well done

TinCan Cosmanaut

Fun fact Tom Cruise and his love interest had a lot of friction during the movie. They had reshoots after filming the movie to add a romance story. Which is why she wears a hat in a lot of scenes. She cut her hair for another movie. Also confused everyone cuz they full on tongue kissing during the romance scenes

Bubba Fett

There is just the 2 and the new one is sort of a real time elapsed meaning takes place 25 or however many years after. Def do both!! It's easy to knock top gun but great cast(lots of big names some early in career), good production team and story has a little for everyone, great action, some good comedy, bit of the chick flick in there, literally something everyone can find a piece they like. Since it was not CGI it holds up as one of the better movies effects wise even decades later.

I hope you enjoyed the partial tour of my hometown of San Diego while watching this movie. My high school had an aeronautic program where we actually got to learn to fly planes and got real flight experience in a Cessna 172. It was a cool sight to be taking off from our little airport called Montgomery Airfield and look to the north and occasionally see an F-14 or an F-18 flying around as NAS (now MCAS) Miramar close by. We also went by call signs instead of our real names. We watched Top Gun in class at least once a month.
