Hi everyone!

First of all: thank you for being a part of my life! Genuinely, I'm really struggling to combine everything right now (June is a craaazzyy work month, so I'm doing a lot of overtime and with the wedding coming up... :)). Coming home to see the comments, see that this is a space that is loving to me, it's just means so much. So thank you!

For this weeks poll: TOM CRUISE.
I feel like everyone and their mother is talking about him, I see him in the papers, even at work people talk about him (and literallly nobody is a movie buff haha). I used an online list for this, so let me know in the comments if this is a good poll or do I need to watch Mission: Impossible actually in a certain order?

Hope you have a good week!

Mary

Oh crap, I guess no one realized that Mari is gonna end up watching "Edge of Tomorrow" BEFORE she sees "Groundhog Day". Those who know, know. "Groundhog Day" won't seem as unique and innovative afterwards. "Edge of Tomorrow" is awesome and should be watched but damn, but it'll be like watching "Avatar" before "Dances with Wolves".

ChickensAreRacist

Glad she did Dances with Wolves. Was a great reaction. I don’t see Avatar in her catalogue so assuming she hasn’t seen it yet.

ChickensAreRacist

Ah dang. Someone deleted a whole back and forth of comments. No one cares about the screenshots I got of it, just sad to see deleted correspondence.

It's just not that big of a deal and the similarities are very vague and structural, might mentioning a million different short stories and novels following the formula much more strictly. Same for Dances; if we went by original influences, we'd be picking black and white movies until Mary retires at the young age of 285 - it's just not worth fretting about any of this unless we're talking direct references that would enhance your enjoyment of the next film in line. Also kind of treading into spoiler territory here, especially if she happens to know what the latter title is about - for either movie.

Miles mentioned before he deleted the thread that she already watched it. So, I assume it's coming down the pike in the next couple weeks.

movieswithmary

It was me. It was going from talking about movies to not being nice to others about their movie opinions and I don't want to go to bed with the risk that I wake up to an escalated discussion.

Connor Ellis

Wait why multiple Mission Impossible films? Those need to be watched in order as they are connected. That's like having a vote on whether to watch Iron Man, Civil War or Endgame first.

To be fair, the last 3 Mission Impossibles are WAY better films than the first 3-- the first couple are kinda dated and the plot of the first movie is so confusing but the action is good. I originally thought you researched the reputations of the movies first and selected the later films based on that, haha.

@WT What I meant was just like Dances with Wolves, Groundhog Day is a classic with a pretty original premise (and both films are also very poignant in their message). And movies like Avatar and Edge of Tomorrow took those premises and made fun and entertaining sci-fi action movies out of them but they're not necessarily deep like the original movies they borrowed from. Seeing one movie before the other could hamper one's enjoyment of the more beloved classic. When Edge of Tomorrow came out, everybody compared it to Groundhog Day cuz who hadn't seen Groundhog Day? And also, knowing the basic premise of a movie is not a spoiler. That's why they make movie trailers, to give viewers an idea of what the movie is about to pique people's interest in seeing it. The premise of Groundhog Day is so famous and iconic that even people who've never seen it know what it's about-- including several first time reactors on YT.

Yeah, Mission Impossible took a few movies before they figured out what they wanted to do with them. But it is better overall if you watch them in order, particularly when you get to the later ones.

Top Gun is silly and cheesy, but it's fun. And it's essentially the movie that made Tom Cruise into TOM CRUISE. War of the Worlds could fit on a Spielberg poll. :) I know you've watched a few of his movies, but it might be fun to take a vote on some that you haven't. Not all of them are classics, but I'd argue that he's rarely made an outright bad movie. Some possibilities... Jaws Close Encounters of the Third Kind 1941 (not really "good," but a guilty pleasure of mine) E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial The Color Purple Empire of the Sun Always A.I. - Artificial Intelligence Catch Me If You Can Lincoln (this one probably requires some familiarity with the American Civil War) West Side Story (2021) (stunningly good for a remake) And most of those have awesome music scores by John Williams. :)

Travis

edge of tomorrow is the smartest choice considering you should really start the mission impossible series at the first one and move forward. I guess you could watch them individually and get away with it but it’s better to at least have some back story

Don Mayhem

Why is it all Tom Cruise films? If I have to choose which movie starring that Scientologist narcissist, watch Eyes Wide Shut horror movie that got Stanley Kubrick killed

I agree that 2 and 3 are mixed bags, but I think the first Mission: Impossible is still second-best out of all of them. It's more of an actual espionage thriller, with lots of great double-crosses and intrigue. My favorite of the series, Rogue Nation, is a perfect blend of 4/5/6's insane stunt work and the classic spy stuff from the first movie.

An underrated Spielberg -- it'd never win a poll -- is one of his earliest movies, the drama The Sugarland Express.

Rain man was just one of those campy 80's feel good movies that you can just vibe on for like a day. Especially since it was based on a real (if hollywoodized) dude. It'd be fun considering what she just said. :) Plus Mission is a long series and rain man would be a one and done. Either works tho.

Eric

Honestly, I think 1is the best one, definitively. And 3 is the best of 3-6; the others are merely following the template of 3 but not as well because none of them have a villain as good.

Eric

I would disagree with that; it's less like watching the MCU films out of order than watching Bond films out of order. You could watch 1 and 3 and not have to watch any other M:I movies, honestly.

Mr. Writhms

I will always vote "War of the Worlds" until I see a reaction. It's my personal "Master and Commander Far Side of the World" 😁

Knowing the premise of a movie is not a spoiler. Whenever you watch a movie trailer, you're being told the premise of the movie-- that's how they rope you into watching it. The philosophy that you must go into EVERY SINGLE MOVIE totally blind is bogus. Honestly, there's only a handful of movies you should go in totally blind like "The Usual Suspects" or "The Truman Show".

Eric

Or "Edge of Tomorrow" because the premise is really cool to discover on your own if you're watching it not because the trailer hooked you but because it was recommended to you, or won a poll, as in this specific case. I've seen at least one reaction to it and it was significantly more fun because she didn't see it coming.

War of the worlds is underrated

shaneth138

I would say that Ready Player One is an outright bad movie. But yeah most of his are solid.

Future_Boy85

I'm not a huge TC fan but my favorite movies of his are Days of Thunder and Legend.

Richard Rolen

Legend is a bit of a forgotten classic. Very unique movie, one of a kind soundtrack, and Tim Curry as "Darkness"... what could go wrong?
