Hi everyone, I know the timing is super off on this one too haha but I'm very happy this won the Natalie Portman poll because I enjoyed it a lot! It's very interesting to think about his motives and are we all V? So interesttttiing!

As a resident of the former United States of America, literal and figurative, fictional and non-fictional, I found the movie and the themes very striking and relevant, a movie ahead of it's time if there ever was one. A fascinating film and a super reaction.

This was such a fun reaction to watch. Made my day Mary.

I saw this when it first came out. The Wachowskis made it their own, speaking more about the world in the US after September 11th and the rise of things like The Patriot Act, the TSA, and the increase of governmental power. That was different than what was intended by Alan Moore and is different than how people likely see it today. This movie is intended to speak to politics so it's impossible to talk about it while staying off the subject.

The movie that broke Natalie Portman from being typecasted as Padmé in Star Wars and later go on to do Black Swan and Jane from the Thor movies. You have to see Black Swan next. Tom Cruise can wait. Awesome movie. God is in the rain.

I very much enjoyed this reaction, Mari. I believe the saying you are thinking of is "....the end justifies the means....." which very much describes Sutlers' approach to governing the people in this dystopic society. I like how you understood just how relevant the connection between the propaganda on screen is to the propaganda that happens every day IN REAL LIFE. And of course, the relevance of the idea of a government using a tragedy to gain and maintain power is brutally true in the wake of Covid. One other thing that I would like to mention here is that in the comic book, (at least, this is what I have read online) the possibility that V IS, in fact, Valerie is left open to the readers interpretation. I hope your week is going well, Mari and I hope you have at least one live stream this weekend that I can catch. On a separate note, have you seen the film 'Haywire'? It's Gina Carano's first movie. Basically a Bourne Identity sort of thing with her as the protaganist. I think you would enjoy it.

Love this movie

In case voice alone wasn't enough to identify him behind V's mask, Hugo Weaving played Elrond, Agent Smith, and Red Skull in the first Captain America. Lots of fun watching you go through an emotional ringer with this one. And as David says above, it is open to interpretation what kind of relationship V actually had with Valerie. If you watch the flashbacks to Larkhill illustrating the doctor's diary, you can see Valerie in those flashbacks, including her body being thrown in the mass grave. It is, on the other hand, maybe possible that V is actually Ruth, Valerie's girlfriend, as his entire crusade seems to be in tribute to Valerie. Or he could be nobody! It's a great, evocative mystery.

I would 100% disagree with that; after a movie like this, "Edge of Tomorrow" is a fantastic change of pace.

No, it was actually the film "Closer" (2004) that got Natalie recognition beyond the Star Wars prequels. She was Oscar-nominated for it. Closer is what helped her get the lead in "V for Vendetta".

Great seeing your reaction to this one, Mary!! You start off being horrified that "V" is killing so many people, and end up sympathizing with him in the end. That's the way this film goes. Even though the ends don't justify the means, it's impossible not to empathize with "V". And how about that dominoes scene?? That was amazing!

Richard Maurer

It's interesting you called V a serial killer early on as he's the farthest thing from it. V is a revolutionary, and revolutions usually require violence. The people he killed were either directly involved in, or servants of, the fascist evil that was their government, so killing them was ultimately an act of good.

Now Mary, you have to react to the movie The Salt Flats lol. Watching this with your reaction just feels different. It's definitely a good thing. I feel more love for the movie somehow. I didn't pick up on the symbolizes before like V for Valerie. You had a shocked look of the small shot of Evey with her long hair back and in the mirror was Detective Finch. Showing the future that Evey and Finch are together. Like a spoiler that you don't know it's a spoiler kind of thing. You'd have to go back and pause and slow motion lol. The movie that broke Natalie Portman out of the Star Wars shadows. She would go on to do Thor and now this Friday, Thor Love and Thunder. She was rocking the shaved head ten years before Millie Brown lol. This is the perfect lesson on how to write a character who has no past. How to you do character depth etc when he is a unknown person. Black Swan is next.

Hey look, it is the 5th of November. Time to rewatch this one with Mary again.
