Hi peeps,

Really enjoyed this one! It was a whole experience on it's own. I'm glad it was a long movie, because i feel like it takes time to develop this bond and if it was a lot shorter that might have felt rushed. What a beautiful film ^^

Your reaction after 70 min has been so pleasant to see.

Lion King you were very close! Those were wildebeests. Look very similar in herds.

When I rewatched "Lion King" for the first time as an adult, I was surprised how similar the stampede scene in it was to the buffalo hunt in "Dances". Thinking the animators must have studied that scene when drawing the stampede.

Mary I'm so happy you watched this. It is a truly beautiful movie. It also portrays an import part of American history. Thank you so much for watching it.

DWW is one of hollywood's best historical films, in my opinion. As always, I enjoyed your reaction very much. The way you empathize and sympathize with the characters and what they are going through is truly wonderful, Mari. I particularly love the way you were able to appreciate the length and breadth of the film and how you enjoyed the magnificent visuals. Hope Lawrence and the kitties are doing well.

Glad you liked this one! It's totally up to you, but I don't think it would be a bad thing if you wanted to look up some general info about the movie before you watch it. Knowing the premise and/or setting isn't necessarily a spoiler. :) But I also understand wanting to go in blind. Again, you do you. Hope you're feeling better!

Brian Jones

This was Costner's magnum opus. Everything from the writing, to the cinematography, to the acting was pretty perfectly executed and garnered him multiple academy awards. The Postman is also worth checking out if you ever get the chance. Granted it's a totally different kind of movie, and a bit lengthy, but still worth the watch. Waterworld, not so much. :) Great reaction as always and glad you loved the movie.

This was set towards the end of the American Civil war, hence the first scene. If you want to delve into what happened to the American Natives I recommend "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee". Make sure you have plenty of tissues.

Tyler Foster

It is not Costner's preferred version, but if you liked spending time in this world and the story, there is actually an even longer version (234 minutes).

Just wanted to say I enjoyed watching this along with you. This is a great movie and one of the few that really portrays Native American culture accurately. I would also like to put in a recommendation for a film that features Native Americans in a more modern setting, which is Wind River. It also features Hawkeye himself, Jeremy Renner and Scarlet Witch, Elizabeth Olsen. She plays a young FBI agent sent to a reservation to investigate the death/murder of a young Native American girl and Jeremy Renner, as a tracker and hunter helps her investigation. It is a very powerful film. Anyways, I look forward to whatever you watch next. Take care.

Marie, loved the part when the driver told Dunbar about Buffalo saying ‘… and sometimes they’re everywhere like curls on a wh*re’, then you felt the top of your head and gave a ‘huh cool’ look. Haha good stuff.

"I feel like whether a person hurts animals for fun tells you quite a lot" There it is, the ultimate debate ender on whether veganism is the way to go (it definitely is). About the only way to enjoy meat without being part of the massive, unfathomably cruel practice of eating animal products would be if you have someone with a hunting license getting you some nice wild boar or a deer - or if you know where to source it. I don't really blame people too much for eating meat, I did and somewhat still do for most of my life, and there are good reasons why our ancestors lapped up awesome-tasting, concentrated protein sources, but removing the deed from the effect is something I definitely can't do anymore. Ironically, our way of anthropomorphizing and latching onto specific features in animals means we are entirely irrational about the magnitudes of animal abuse too. I mean yeah, a coyote dying because it was just wonkily shot at or a dog getting bludgeoned to death in John Wick hits our tear ducts a bit harder... but that's paradise in comparison to what we systemically (and superfluously) do to animals for excess' sake. Just made me realize how wildly misaligned our emotional attachments are, as easy it is to empathize with someone just craving a huge steak.

Couldn't be more relevant in a movie about First Americans being shown to revere and respect natural resources and animals, especially with the very salient commentary provided by Mary. Whether you are happy with it or not, it very much is the place to go for a bit of a tangent, today more so than ever.
