Hello guitar enthusiast,

Let's kick off our week of practice with our new Lick of the Week! For today's lesson, we'll learn how to perform a variation to our blues scale in the key of A, before tackling a "Fast and Funky" blues lick. Here's a couple of tips for you to consider:

  • Time your licks ... Consider which beat you prefer your lick to come in on, and whether or not it's an up or down beat. Watch your foot and determine whether your toes are down or up when the first note comes in.
  • Speed is cool, sometimes ... The lick you are learning today is what we refer to in the business as a "face-melter," it is not a melodic phrase, and so it should be used only when you want to increase the energy in your solo.
  • Transpose your licks ... Be sure to practice this lick in several different keys. Because this lick is created from a common position of the blues scale, it can easily be moved from fret to fret. I suggest trying to fit this lick, or some variation of it, over the backing tracks provided at JAMTRACKS365, be sure to subscribe there as well.
