You recognizing Eliza Dushku (Sissy, Faith) in the crowd was so impressive! She was my crush too and I'm her big fan since Buffy and even I would have trouble recognizing her if I didn't know already it was her. I'm glad you didn't know she was in the show and that you were surprised by her cameo. Also, you describing Angel as a newborn baby in the last scene got me laughing so hard! Amazing reaction as always!

Melissa

Ah, this is where my love for this show grows exponentially. Kudos for spotting Eliza Dushku right away. She's a fave actress of mine, so I was happy to see your love for her. And who doesn't love Bring It On? Don't answer anyone if you don't lol. This is a strong episode because it gives so much. In one episode, you have the introduction of another Slayer, the return of (Naked!) Angel, and Buffy releasing the torment she's been holding in for months. Give me more of this all day long. Giles faking the binding spell was so incredibly moving. He knows Buffy so well in that he can tell she needed to unburden herself. I can't wait for you to see more of this season!

Steveo

I just assumed Giles wasn't invited because he's with an active Slayer and thus wouldn't be allowed to.

Shaun Houghton

Why would Giles be invited to the Watchers Retreat, he'd only make the rest of them look bad, and they know it.

Andrew Pulrang

This is a somewhat meta comment, but here it goes … I think everything about The Watchers Council was something of an afterthought for the writers on this show … a flexible, all-purpose MacGuffin. So a lot of what we hear about them doesn’t make much sense for what an “actual” organization with its mission would ever do. The writers make it do whatever they need it to do for the plot in any given episode or storyline. But that works! Every inconsistency just cements the idea that The Watchers Council is fundamentally flawed, and maybe even a bit ridiculous. If its attributes were more carefully planned out we would have to take it seriously, and that would change a lot of things on the show. So a bit of haphazard neglect in writing about The Council ends up making it just what we need it to be to make the story more interesting and meaningful.

She's heeeeere! :D I like this episode a lot and tend to think that it's easily the strongest of the season so far. It has a ton of really cute/funny moments (including some standouts for Mama J!), and the dynamic between Buffy and Faith contrasts interestingly with the dynamic between Buffy and Kendra. When I commented on how it seemed to me like Buffy had come to the realization that part of her *enjoyed* being the Slayer in "Anne", I did so with Faith's impending introduction in mind. Kendra was all business and duty, but Faith is someone who has seemingly fully embraced Slayerdom to the point of reveling in it. It's funny how, as painful as some of the experiences that have come from being the Slayer have been, Buffy still reacts to Faith's appearance with the same instinctive territorial attitude that she had when Kendra arrived nearly a season ago (at least until she gets to know Faith a little better and realizes that her bravado is covering up some painful experiences of her own). Oh, and Angel's back! And *of course* it happens just as Buffy reached the point of being ready to let him go. I cracked up when you predicted that just before it happened--you've definitely gotten a feel for how this show tends to work!

Faith is one of my favorite characters in the Buffyverse. Eliza is an amazing actress and season 3 is gonna blow your socks off!

Okay, a day and a half is slow, even for me. Sorry. I understand your wanting to organize your time as best suits you, but personally, I'd rather wait an extra day or whatever rather than lose the knowledge that your reaction reflects your current state of knowledge. Yes, Eliza Dushku is enticing to people of many genders and sexualities. And her butt in tight leather pants is…mmmmm. Given that Eliza's only 17 at this point, I feel rather like Angel, I suppose. (Although the part where Eliza later talked about being molested on a set earlier in her career, and how that led to her problems with drugs and alcohol, that makes objectifying her even less decent. I admit. Sorry, Eliza.) I really like this one. After Whedon (IMO) didn't even try during 3.01 and Marti Noxon started well but somewhat lost the plot last week, it's nice that David Greenwalt gives us a good strong episode that even corrects two of the three flaws that IMO have been making Season 3 less fun for me. And some of the detail work is just yummy. Indeed, I thought that Greenwalt had both written and directed this, so I was surprised to see James A. Contner's directing credit pop up. And, remembering your reaction to the shot of Giles's shoe in 2.16 (Contner's previous episode) I was startled to realize that this episode begins with…a pan over Willow and Oz's shoes. Huh. Seriously, is this some sort of feet-fetish Contner has? I know which episode is his next job (I remember the critic David Hines groaning about a technical issue in the fight in that ep) and I don't RECALL any shoe-cam moments there. But you can bet I'll be looking out for them, now.

2x16 also has that long shot of xander walking down the corridor while everyone swoons. And the long shot starts with xanders shoes

I love that you’ve finally made it to Faith and I love your reaction to her being there. Of course, I had no idea who she was - the actress - when I first saw this but I have come to love and respect her so much — certainly too much to objectify her by breaking her down into pieces and then comment on them in the same breath as talking about her trauma as a child…😳 — she did so much for this show (she’s also in another whedon production called Dollhouse if you’re interested) and for women in hollywood in general. This is defiantly one of my favorite episodes of the first three seasons from a character perspective. The little arc of Giles gently creating a space where Buffy could feel safe in opening up about what really happened with Angel is just masterful. I think my respect for our beloved watcher was solidified with that reveal: “There is no spell.” 🥰 Anyway, finally caught up! Loving your reactions. Can’t wait until for the next one.

Jessica Roth

That antepenultimate (third-from-final) scene is a thing of beauty. Buffy finally stops lying (one of the three things that's been annoying me) and we have the three most-experienced actors in the cast, all at the top of their game. It's beautiful to see your thought process in reacting to "There is no spell" while watching Alyson Hannigan show Willow doing the exact same thing. (I love when actors hit a series of emotions without saying a word but make them so distinct you can see them all, like AH taking Willow from "huh?" to "Oh!" to "Wow, Giles is so awesome" to "Poor Buffy" without a word. My absolute favorite for this is near the end of the baseball film "Eight Men Out", where the Chicago team has been losing games on purpose so that they can get a payoff from gamblers, but the gamblers have stiffed them, so now they're playing to win, and if they can win the next game, the series will be tied, but if they lose it's over. And James Read, as Claude "Lefty" Williams, the scheduled pitcher, is out with his wife and two men come up and say hi to him and compliment his wife's charm, and he responds politely, and the guy goes something like, "she must really enjoy seeing you pitch. Too bad you're going to lose" and Read laughs, thinking he's joking, and the man says, more sternly, "no, seriously…you're going to lose". And Read's reaction goes from "Huh?" to "Holy Sh*t, these are the gamblers!" to "Well, screw you" and then he hears his wife's voice [and maybe the gambler looks at her, I forget] and it's "oh God, they're threatening to hurt her!" then "I'm going to kill this bastard"…then "no, I can't risk losing her" and "damn, I AM going to lose on purpose" and "I hate myself". No dialogue, all visible. So well done. So this scene was always going to be a favorite.) But it's not all Aly; Sarah's work is wonderful as Buffy recalls the joy of getting Angel briefly back ("He didn't remember anything he'd done. He just held me") and then the pain of what she had to do. ("But it, it was too late, and I had to.") It doesn't hurt that Greenwalt's words are practically poetry: "So I told him that I loved him, and I kissed him, and I killed him" and that ASH and Aly do such a great job reacting, one stone-faced and keeping up the facade, the other practically in visible pain from her guilt. The "I Quit" scene in "Prophecy Girl" is still my favorite, because the stakes are so much higher and because Sarah and Tony are equally exceptional there. But David, much though he tries, can't keep up (David's best acting seems to be as Angelus, who really wouldn't mind Buffy dying…) and so I find this to be the most consistently-excellent acting in the series. Although I used to ding Buffy a point, because she kissed Angel BEFORE she said the "I love you", but a closer look at "Becoming" shows that they kiss, Buffy says "I love you" (and Angel answers), Buffy says "close your eyes" and then she gives one more quick kiss before she sticks him with the sword, So my apologies to the Buffster; she did have the order right, after all.

Patrick Lyke

Looking back at season 3 I now wish they had hidden David's name from the main cast list for the first 3 episodes, only to make the reveal of Angel's return way more of a surprise when it happened. Still, can't complain too much about his *ahem* reveal at the end LOL ;)

Jessica Roth

Well, it was never going to be a big shock, given that Joss Whedon was doing press the very night "Becoming, Part 2" aired, to let the Buffy/Angel fans know that Angel wasn't dead, he'd be back and David would still be a regular in S3. The VERY NIGHT. Sigh.

Jessica Roth

Right, you love Eliza too much to acknowledge that she even HAS physical attributes, got it. That strategically-placed cutout in the shirt we first see Faith in? You have no idea which portion of her anatomy that's meant to highlight; how wonderful of you. Thank goodness you would never bother to reference her real-life trauma because…that's disrespectful, is that it? I don't know what I would do without you to scold me for my sinful ways. Hope I didn't delay you from heading off to heal those lepers. Keep up the sacred work! (And just for the record, I took a breath before changing subjects. Indeed, I breathe quite often. "I'm actually known for it," to borrow Buffy's words about her bath-taking. Now you know.)

darcieswatchingbuffy

I am loving season 3 already cause youre right melissa it gives so much!! and im going to have to agree with shaun on the reason for giles not being invited :P

darcieswatchingbuffy

this is fair! i can totally see it being an afterthought and not fully flushed out. too bad they didnt know i would come along and over think things ;)

darcieswatchingbuffy

Ahh i can't wait to see how Faith's storyline goes! i am of course very excited for another slayer and the fact that its here is just a - perfect :) LOL yes sometimes with this show i just get the little feelings of whats gonna happen even if i dismiss the prediction too LOL but yeah bad timing for the return of angel.. even if im a little excited to see how this all goes!

darcieswatchingbuffy

oooh thanks for that feedback on recording schedule jessica! i really like it too when i just record one a week.. im thinking maybe i could even switch the day of the week i post to accommodate instead... will see! appreciate the input tho! oh boy now im going to be looking for feet shots all the time LOL

darcieswatchingbuffy

BRANDON! i have seen some old comments from you too im going to go back and reply but just wanted to say HI, welcome, glad youre enjoying the reactions!! agreed about rupe and buffy - they're relationship is one of my favourites to watch grow. its always subtle, but continuous and i am quite enjoying it. :)

Andrew Pulrang

You’re joking, but you’re onto something. “Buffy” was one of the first shows to have a fan base that did close analysis of every detail. “Star Trek” was always like that, and later on “X-Files,” but few other show runners and writers until the late 1990s expected audiences to notice continuity details and flaws in world-building. Nowadays it’s essential, at least for certain kinds of shows.

darcieswatchingbuffy

i really like that you could interpret my feelings without me saying anything! cause that was exactly how it went, and sometimes i just dont have words to say so i dont say anything. kinda allow myself to just feel the feelings and stuff. that scene is definitely one ill always remember.

Jordan Haddow

Plus the intro's can be a huge pain to get around. Unions and stuff get involved because it's a status thing and can affect pay.

Giles, the ultimate dad. I think he figured it out long ago. In the last episode, when everyone was pressing Buffy for info on what happened when she was gone, he put a stop to it. He knew she had to tell it when she was ready, but still, he found a method of incentivizing her to do it as early as possible while not putting undue pressure on her. What a guy. Also, I've never seen anyone catch onto who the actress playing Faith is so early on. I love that you were so excited she was a big character in the episode, and as it seems, the show so far. She is certainly captivating, or at least Xander seems to think so. Side note, how hilarious was it that his little obsession with Faith kind of sidestepped into some possible kinky roleplaying with Cordy? It's kind of like, what? Where did that come from? So hilarious. It's also funny considering how much Cordy was into Xander playing the role last episode.

SK Elkins

Aaaaand this is the point at which Season 3 starts to go south for me. I'm sorry, but the arc of S2 was so perfect, and its season finale *such* a tour de force, that the decision to then go "jk lol!" at the start of the next season quite literally hurts my stomach. I was hoping that maybe it would sit better with me now than it did when I first recoiled from it when this first aired, but nooooooope! It still revolts me. What a cheap, tawdry way to completely undercut your own story. Blech!

JameseyTakesFlight

I love when you find those little nuggets and they become your favorite quotes... "When did you die? You never told me you died!!!" If there's not already a list of Darcie's favorite quotes somewhere there should be!
