Greetings adventurers!

I’m no stranger to making a good deal and when I came across a kindly old woman who invited me in for some tea in the middle of an otherwise uninhabited swamp, well I knew I had someone I could make a sale to. I wasn’t expecting the turn of events when she said she had something to offer me as well. What first looked like a simple gnarled old walking stick, turned out to be something far more special. I was a little put off when things started crawling out of it, but the magical nature of it drew me in. She told me to take it, and whatever price I paid would be fair. Not sure what that meant, so I simply plopped down a few gold and left, new staff in hand!

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:
Ah yes, spooky time! We have previously done a full month of spooky items in October, but we found that we were just trying too hard to crank out things that weren’t as inspiring so this year we chose to keep it down to just one spooky item. I think this was a great take on it as it’s something that I haven’t seen explored a lot. There’s a surprising number of insect/arachnid based spells in 5E and PF2E so I wanted to see how I could take a staff and put those together into a cohesive item that gave access to all of those spells.

In 5E there’s usually an expectation that a staff can do a bit more than just give access to spells. I started with the idea of the spirit guardians like insect swarm that just spread around you. It didn’t really need much more than that. With a strong spell list and that additional power on top, the only thing I needed to do was balance out the number of charges to allow for frequent use, but not allow for spam.

For Pathfinder 2E, there’s an acknowledgement that spells are enough to make an item be powerful. This is just due to the nature of their spell economy and preparation. Staves are powerful because they give you more spells. Pretty easy. I didn’t want to include the extra swarm power as that would push it a bit over the top, but I did want to give it something thematic. Identifying creepy crawlies was kind of the perfect venue for that.

We’re excited to get something spooky out the door for you all. I think it’s one of our favorite seasons in AB. We love making things to celebrate the spookiest time of the year. We hope you enjoyed it as well, even if it did make your skin crawl.

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
