Greetings adventurers! 

I know of a particular matron, but not in the sense that you think. Rather than tending the typical young in your mind, she tends to the plants and hedges of a garden most beautiful. She frets over every leaf and happily takes on any fauna that wish to call the place home. She sings sweetened songs as he tends to her garden seeking only to see it grow healthy and strong. That said, for those that would befriend her, a gift most precious is sometimes given. This chest piece is just one such gift that I obtained. The others, I keep for myself as they bring me great joy.

Design notes from Matthew:

It’s that time again where we pair creature and item and as usual I’m really excited about this one. Something that I love to consider is that not all creatures have to be instantly hostile to the adventurers. Some can have the possibility of friendship, especially those that are more intelligent or those that have a purpose that isn’t just combat. This is one such creature and the item that is coming with it here is something that I would hope would be a gift to players that befriend the creature.

Designing for 5E leaves a bit more wiggle room on certain things while being more restrictive on others. For this one, I had an idea for a 2 state armor that could be switched back and forth. I wanted something that provided additional mobility in one state and additional protection in the other. It’s a difficult balance to strike, but I think the added abilities of a climb speed or AC make for some really interesting choices. The constant presence of it makes for a fun piece of strategy as well,

For the PF2E version, a 2 state item doesn’t really work out so well. You would end up with a bit of complex wording involving how to switch between them. There are combination weapons, but for things that aren’t weapons, we don’t have an easy trait to play around with. For that reason I decided to make the base armor a bit less powerful, but offer the option to activate some more defenses for a time. I felt like this ended up striking a nice middle point where you want to use the activation but still feel you’re getting good armor regardless.

We’re continuing through the summer here and it just so happened that everything this month was something grown. I’m not sure why, maybe we just have nature on the brain. We’ll be releasing the Garden Matron later on today that will complete this item and turn it into the proper set it was meant to be. We hope you enjoy.
