One More Thing: Garden Matron (Patreon)

Greetings Adventurers,

As we close out June, I think it's time to celebrate the proper arrival of summer with something distinctly nature. The Garden Matron is our take on a creature to tend to those royal gardens. I think it could be treated as a wonderful show of opulence to have one of these flitting around the royal topiaries tending to each and every one with meticulous care. Hopefully you can find the right place to put one into your campaigns.

Design notes from Matthew:

We had a desire to create something natural and also maybe a little less hostile than some of the creatures we've created in the past. There's certainly no end of combat focused critters in our games, but sometimes it can be nice to offer something a little different and that was the starting place for this creature. I wanted to make sure it felt like its primary job was tending to the gardens and any combat prowess it offered was in pursuit of defending that garden or had alternate means as a tool to tend the garden.

In the 5E version, I leaned a lot on spells to fill out the theme of this creatures power. I think the manipulation of water as well as the ability to interact with the flora and fauna in its garden was of the utmost importance in getting the feel of it right. After that, it was just a bit of flavor in making the creature have an effect on the land as well as it returning to nature if it were slain.

For the PF2E version, spells are certainly a large part of its loadout, but I also saw the ability to include some diplomacy options, almost as if this creature is an arbiter of the arboreal if you'll excuse the alliteration. It's interesting to think of this creature sorting out disputes between squirrels or organizing a truce between the crows and mocking jays. I just find that to be such a fun idea that I had to include it.
