Slight change to the program: I have decided to post Chapter 87 of The odds were never in my favour before the betaed Chapter 86, since I'm close to finishing 10-4 (2-3 days maximum) and correcting the chapter of the First Task will come immediately after (I don't like juggling between two stories when one is in the finishing stages).

I will try to have Chapter 86 ready by Monday-Tuesday at the latest. As for the story-which-shouldn't-be-named, the update will definitely come by mail before the end of the month.

Bests,

How big is the chapter for said unnamed story?

ITTS HERE! I have been waiting so long for this! Edit - also poor Lyudmila, wants to drink her sorrows away but she sadly can’t

Thank you for the update; I enjoyed it a lot. Please be sure to take care of yourself.

Between 53000 and 56000 words. The essential of the writing is almost done, but I must re-read everything and see the no-doubt numerous mistakes I've made while in a writing fugue.

Awesome, Rufus struggling with his hierarchy, repressing his murder impulses. The styx viper's crisis is hyping me, Neville seems lost, and I'm looking forward to the next meeting of the moderate light champions with Alexandra. The de Medici family seems to be realining to a more "Grey position", wher I was reading the thanks scene, I thought you were going to implement some kind of pledge (I haven't forgotten that Alexandra has a Court). Lyudmila having a more human side is even more frightening. Thanks for writing and sharing

It doesn't quite make sense that the law enforcement of Wizarding Britain can't take the Fudge away in chains when they have specific proof he colluded with the DE. It's not a voting matter (not removing him from office), so what am I missing? Doesn't that qualify as treason, terrorism and so on and so forth? Does he actually have immunity?

Nicholas

Thanks for the new chapter. The consequences are interesting. One question, the King was told there were two new Styx Vipers. The last chapter showed someone being bitten immediately after after the Champion of Unity was killed which made two. Was it those two they were counting or did the ritual create two and there are actually at least four running around by the time of the conversation? I can see lots of reasons why the numbers given to the King would be wrong. Thanks again!

Thanks for sharing this chapter! Boy are a lot of things happening. Albus, without Ra there egging him on seems much more level headed than we have seen before which is good, and I liked his talk with Neville. HIm recognizing Lily is probably significant, and I'm really looking forward to seeing more of that. Alex finally got to see her mother other than the Belltime meeting. Fudge trying to throw the only person that saved the UK from a totally humiliating defeat to save himself is in character and I can sympathize with Scrimjour having to put up with the moron, which Dumbledore mentioned as well. Also, Rufus having the thought about how they were going to enforce any degree...yeah, there's a reason you don't annoy people that powerful. Lyudmila getting the wind knocked out of her sails is probably what she deserved but the implications of her home life is...not great are there. Still, going around and thinking you are at the top of the world is only asking for somebody to get the jump on you. Looking at the clue for the Second Task, yeah this is going to be tough. Alex is really good at runes, and she's had trouble to even find out what the clue means. I guess the fact that the Queen offered the use of her 'Great Library' is only going to be more tempting. Also I can see some of the champions from Hogwarts having real tough challenges if they haven't even touched Runes;. EDIT: ...rereading the Queen's description of how the Light always wins...wow, the Light was cheating very blatantly there. Powerful artifacts that should have taken decades forged in days? Yeah...

Forgottenone

I would not be shocked if some of the new champions of light are far different from past champions... Hell will the new champion be Unity or with the rules falling apart a different aspect step forwards?

Gotta love this story. One of my favorite takes on this universe ever written. I care little for the gender of the protagonist like my friend who reads this with me (we discuss it over coffee, even) but Alexandra is a treat. Snarky, Ravenclaw, dedicated to becoming a warrior-mage-badass, acknowledges Gandalf the Gray as the greatest wizard of all time, turns into a giant snake/dragon monster from Greek Antiquity... what's not to enjoy about her character? But yeah. This chapter was a treat. A lot of fallout from the story, and the Dark being ironically hilarious - Osiris making small talk about throwing a Leviathan at someone... Alexandra is giving him IDEAS. Lyudmila suddenly gains depth (beyond crazy powerful mass murdering sorceress psycopath) and I like how you used Astrid to be the lens to convey that. I don't know why, but the Sword of House Sverre (and that is a fun title that I wonder the meaning to everytime I see her character) seems like she could be a friend and possible adjutant to Lyudmila if the woman rebounds a little bit away from her current self... or at least takes people under her banner with the intent to protect them and have people to come home to (enormous character development for Loki's Champion... and possibly not what you have in store for her). Either way. Lyudmila's on the warpath right now, and I can't help but feel she and Alexandra may have a climactic duel at some point or another where Alexandra can't escape her. Lyudmila has to have a weakness, though, beyond her arrogance (which Alexandra seemed to cure her of). All things must die (and can die), eventually, and even Fenris was killed by Vidar splitting him in half during Ragnarök. Honestly, it kind of seems like there should be three neutral powers - Life, Fate, and Death - in the grand scheme of this universe. None of those things are inherently "light" or "dark", "good" or "evil"... things begin, things "move", and things end. Honestly, it also seems like Ananke (Mother of the Greek Fates) should be the Patron Deity of a "RESPONSIBLE and NEUTRAL" Champion of Fate... and I feel like any responsible Fate deity that erred towards neutrality would ABSOLUTELY look to crush the Light. Because seriously... they CHEAT SO MUCH IT'S INSANE! Osiris and his forces aren't good... but they are kind of the underdogs here and I want to see these arrogant Light Templars fall. Horus's Champion, de Conde, is alright, though. He can think for himself at least... I also can't help but feel the rest of Alexandra's group need to pick up the pace. For all that they trust her, Alexandra doesn't really have a second-in-command. Morag is the closest she has to that and Morag isn't exactly in the same weight class. Hermione is fit only for finding information, since it seems that she's very poor at synthesizing new thoughts from it (I may be wrong, but she strikes me as a fact checker and data dump.) Susan may have potential as a Necromancer if she follows her family history and Cho as an alchemist if she manages it... but so far, all of Alexandra's allies seem like hobbits and her as Gandalf if you'll pardon the analogy. They have no Aragorn, Gimil, Boromir, and Legolas... unless I'm wrong about that or you're just taking the slow route to development. They ARE only 4th years... even if Alexandra's stronger than most of the Auror department... Finally, thanks for the chapter. I'll admit this is the first of your stories I read and my favorite (second-favorite is The-Story-That-Not-Be-Named, easily). It's nice to see you just going crazy with this universe and making it far more magical in ways I've never seen in fanfiction before. It is a breath of fresh air, in other words.

I kinda feel bad for all the faceless wage slaves in the British DMLE. Every day the same shit, the endless pointless paperwork, taking a small bribe in knockturn, drinking tea, goofing off, looking the other way whenever purebloods commit some minor offence. Then one day, you hear rumors about the minister talking about sending the entire DMLE on a one way suicide mission against a Champion of Magic. I imagine the DMLE is about to get a wave of resignations...

Liedral

“Minister, with my deepest respect...stop having ideas, please.” <-- that sentence was the best I think

Antony444

The power houses of the government have heavy suspicions Fudge is behind it, yes. But the same way they don't have proof for Alexandra, they don't have proof for Fudge (though they've searched). And unfortunately, the Ministry is so divided it isn't likely they will be able to gain the support to do anything else than remove him. Which would bring the fall of a Minister with no one else in charge at the helm...

Antony444

It was those two the Exchequer King was counting, yes. Styx Vipers were created by a Dark ritual, but they don't kill every minute...

Antony444

Every Champion is different from the other. Different family, different favourite spells, etc...

Antony444

For now, there isn't resignation, since it didn't happen (grin). Of course, it isn't going to improve the DMLE's respected for Fudge...

Am I the only one that thinks that Alex misread what Morgane meant when she brought up the Animagus forms? To me it sounded like she thought Alex had a Basilisk form and was bragging about how her form of a Styx Viper was the original and better because it had regen. Her bringing up the Hydra experiment feels like Antony trying to misdirect the reader, along with creating a misunderstanding. Of course I want this to be true so we can get an OH SHIT moment from Osiris and Morgane.

Sebiraider11

Let's begin with this: This is another good chapter, even if most of it was anticipated, mostly because it needed to happen. But there were still a few surprises. I wonder what would have Dumbledore done, if he knew the identity of the surprise vampire that he saw honoring Alexandra? And will he mention that one to Ra? Then we have of course Lady Morgane getting her new apprentice greenlighted by her boss and her testing Alexandra. We have the dark queen getting a bit more humanisation and voldie appearing in the festivities. One thing that I noticed that should be corrected is shortly before the champions get their rewards for doing so well. We have Lucrezia sforza commenting upon a golden podium and then answering herself that her mother doesn't do small in regards to ceremonies. If it was, let's say Henri de Conde who gave the first remark it would make a bit more sense. "... We tried everything else before this. Seriously, we lured their armies away only to find that they teleported to the final battle just in time. Another time we killed their support armies only to find us facing light filled Zombies who just would not drop dead until years later, when our window of opportunity was naturally long gone." - Morgane Rys'Ygraine Avalon during a long rant over the Cheaters from the Light I dare say, that Lyudmilla surviving the first task is part of fates payment for the first seal getting activated. Alexandra recognizing that she is kind of screwed, because she didn't manage to end Lyudmilla, was a necessary step. The next step would be to look for any kind of help in dealing with that problem, not that there is much help to be found. The other champions are most likely not powerful enough and apart from that there are only 4 beings who I would say can take Lyudmilla on and have a very good chance of winning one on one. "We would start with endurance training. Just stand there while my associates throw spell after spell at you. If you endure the effects of all these spells, nothing Lyudmilla throws at you will faze you." - Ra on Alexandras training regime "Training you would most likely not be a total wast of my time, alas I must make sure that my valued subordinates and my brother don't do things that we all are going to regret. And we both know that my Queen wants you as an apprentice" - Osiris upon being asked if he would lend a hand in Alexandras training "It's an easy two step plan. First you turn her into charcoal, then you profit. If for some unfathomable reason you cannot do that, then GET. ME. OUT. OF. HERE. and pay my considerable fee and I do it for you." - Nidhogg on how to beat Lyudmilla "Sure I'd help, but see I'm looking for a new apprentice and the person I want is remarkably stubborn, it's like, I don't know, a family trait. You want help and training, you know what to do." - Lady Morgane upon the same topic as the other three people above I believe that should explain the crux of the matter. Alexandra needs help and she begins to realize it. Now we have heard of the preliminary apprenticeships which are meant to happen at some point, In these i'm rather sure Morgane and Alexandra will find themselves somehow paired. but until these happened I doubt that Alexandra and Lyudmilla will see each other in the arena for any task.
