Pistons fan here. So you can consider my bias as you read my comment. While I appreciate the perspective this documentary brought to show the Pacers side of things, I feel that there needs to be some of the same perspective offered for the Detroit fans who were there that night (and I'm not counting the morons like John Green). Nobody had ever witnessed this sort of action where a professional athlete storms into the stands and just starts attacking people with intent to injure all because of something stupid like a thrown beverage. Literally none of this stuff happens if Artest doesn't completely lose his mind when he didn't have to. He was the same player who forearmed Richard Hamilton in the deciding game 6 of the previous year's playoffs and had also just unnecessarily given a hard foul to Ben Wallace at the end of that night's game. So of course he's going to be open season if he gives the fans an excuse to throw some shots at him. I respect the Pacers players for saying they were primarily acting in defense of their teammate/brother, but I would say the same is true for most of the Detroit fans. They saw their own come under attack and responded in kind. It was ugly and horrible and thankfully nothing even close to this has ever happened again.
