Rewatching this season, its very masterful the way Unalaq is playing the complex sociopolitical landscape to his advantage. He clearly has decades of experience on Korra, which is why she seems to come off so comparatively naive.

Tenzin and his sibling's whole relationship is one of my favorite parts about this season. No life is easy. I like how the creators took the risk to make Aang's history as a father a little rocky. I do think Bumi is pretty confident in himself as well, but he just feels like he could have done more to carry on Aang's legacy. I don't think Aang was a bad father, but just had his priorities a little skewed. I mean he WAS the Avatar. That plus 3 kids is a lot to handle haha. The only thing I would suggest is to watch episodes 7 and 8 of this season together... You won't regret it. Obviously, if it's impossible then it's no big deal! Don't push yourself too hard.

I agree about Aang, it breaks my heart to think that he wasn't the best father. I guess I had him on a pedestal as well. I also can understand why he would focus more on Tenzin because he is an airbender. Good reaction guys.

Yes. The season (and series as a whole) truly takes off with episodes 7 & 8 and onward! Please watch those together if your schedules allow. 🙂

the other way i see it is as a monk they don't really have fathers more father figures and I'm guessing he treated tenzin similar to the way monk gyatso treated him

Aang must have been a little bit disappointed with 2 of his first children being non-aribenders and was losing hope of having Airbender children until Tenzin was born. He probably thought the Airbender culture/legacy was going to die with him and Tenzin gave him hope. But he should have treated all his children equally.

Well I agreed it is hard to see Aang as not the best father, It does make sense if you look at it from a different point of view. Aang had a lot on his plate, he was the Avatar, he had to rebuild a war torn world, the formation of republic city, rebuilding the air culture, a husband and finally a father, he couldn't be perfect in all things. Also, Aang grew up in a culture where kids did not have parents, so he had no reference to draw from and same with Katara in way as both her parents were gone after a certain age. Aang already felt like he failed the world once as the Avatar so him failing on that again wasn't an option for him, so him devoting a lot of his time to world is not a surprise as that is the Avatars job. After having two kids be non air benders Aang had to start getting worried and feeling the pressure, so when Tenzin was born it had to feel like it was a godsend to him. Finally he had someone to pass all his air bending knowledge to in Tenzin and someone who can provide more air benders, so that meant a lot of one on one time and the burden was now passed to Tenzin as the last air bending master again after Anag died. It didn't mean he loved his other kids any less but that he was not perfect in every way. He was human

I've watched many reactors watching this series. At first I didn't know what to think of the shocking idea of Aang as a father like this. But after many watches... I actually like it. He may have been the avatar, but he is, ultimately... human. With human limitations. He clearly loved all his children, but all their lives were complicated and healthy relationships are not high up on the list of subjects past avatars would necessarily know much about... so this gives him real dimension and character.

I also think we need to consider everyone has a different take on the situation. Now that my sister and I are adults and actually get along, we had a horrible relationship; we have talked about different situations and both have a completely opposing take on what happened. I see that something happened one way and she sees it completely different. To my bafflement. So it is hard to judge b/c we are going how they perceived things, they may be right but they may also have missed things, clouded by sibling jealousy.
