The emotional manipulation of both Zuko & Aang in this episode is very sad. Kat said it best, they mirror/parallel each other. Also, poor Aang is suffering through some sort of PTSD after the battle at the North Pole. This is something real soldiers go through after experiencing a terrible act of malevolence, and often it's themselves who committed the act. Coming to terms with the terrible things you're capable of is something Aang must contend with, and he's only twelve years old.
