The creators were not afraid to tackle issues such as sexism, which makes sense in a character like Sokka who comes from a tribe where women were mainly caretakers. And of course he also has his insecurities as a man being so young and inexperienced. He developed a lot in this episode.

What you are really going to see is the theme of growing up over and over. This is a great lesson for kids but also adults. Each character you grow to like more and more as they grow and accept the responsibility they are given.

The themes and messages the show explores is even better when you remember this was made in 2005. :)

I think a big reason why their messages come across so well, is because they are very well written into the plot. It makes sense, and isn't forced like so many times nowadays. If people feel like you are preaching they stop listening and become annoyed. But in this show all of these messages make perfect sense for the characters. Nothing feels forced.
