Chapter 16

After getting Dratini's egg some of Ray's plans got delayed. As he wants to hatch the egg as soon as possible.

Dragon-types are notorious for long raising periods. Well, that perception can be argued. Depending on the trainer that is. As most important to the dragon is to train its Dragon-type energy.

Get the Dragon-type moves down and experience rows of battles and one's Dragon-type will evolve.

Nothing truly difficult in a way. Consistency is key. And that is something Ray is trying to stick to. He trains his roster daily. Even the rotated ones are told to continue to work.

So, there is confidence in Ray that he can raise his future Dratini into a powerful Dragonite.

"This is it? This stream around 3 kilometres in that direction goes down into a waterfall… a perfect location if I do say so." As the Junior Professor mentioned his starter nodded at him.

It was Charmeleon's turn to travel with his trainer. Well, by this point the list of Pokemon who can travel with him at proper speed is not that many.

His exotic Pokemon are a no-go. He trying to show them off as little as possible, The Water-type he has is not meant for land travelling. Then Onix messes up the road… so it leaves quite a few Pokemon who can travel with him.

"Great, then let's go." As Ray said that he pocketed the Pokenav and started walking alongside a water stream. Thanks to the fancy gadget he got from Steven, the Pallet native can easily diverge from a route and travel without fear in a completely undiscovered location. With a built-in GPS, he doesn't worry about getting lost.

While he doubts this location is not 'undiscovered'. He is certain that it is quite secluded. A good spot to hatch a Dratini and get some training done in the process.

With his the Fire-type help Ray didn't need to worry about any stranglers getting in his way. Most Grass-types simply run away when they see a Charmeleon. But, occasionally, a Water-type will pop…

"Poli?"

"A Poliwag… Charmeleon uses Flamethrower to scare it away…" The Junior Professor with a bored tone ordered while holding the egg container in his hands.

The Flame Pokemon nodded at his trainer and released a torrent of flames from his mouth at the feet of the Tadpole Pokemon.

Instead of running away the Water-type jumped back and released a stream of bubbles from its mouth at Charmeleon.

"Hmm? Dodge it and use Flamethrower once more! This time don't hold back and blast that Water-type away!"

With a growl, Ray's Starter dodged the Bubblebeam and released a much hotter torrent of flames at Poliwag who dodged by jumping into the water stream.

A moment later is shot some water at Flame Pokemon.

"That's Water Gun use Protect!"

Quickly the Fire Starter crossed his arms and a green barrier surrounded him, the Water-type move smashed into the barrier.

"Now use Fire Spin!"

The moment the barrier did its job Ray ordered another attack. this time it was to get the Water-type into a continuous damage situation. Hopefully, as that slippery Tadpole is abusing its surroundings.

The blast of fire slammed into the Water-type. However, it was in the water, mitigating the damage, making it barely register with the Pokemon.

However, it was enough to make it leave the stream!

"Now charge in with Metal Claw!"

Charmeleon quickly dashed forward slamming with sharpened claws from pure steel.

While it was a direct hit the move dealt only half of its original damage thanks to the typing.

What shocked Ray to some extent was that the Poliwag quickly recovered and lunged forward. The moment it was close it used its tail to slap his Fire-type.

"What the… that's Double Slap…" For a second the Junior Professor was baffled that this Tadpole has balls to do that!

"Fire Punch!"

With a pissed-off roar, Charmeleon slammed his fist coated with fire into Water-type's gut, sending it flying some distance away.

"Oh? That's some durability. That's not a baby Pokemon that's for sure."

Ray didn't want to brag but his Charmeleon is powerful. His Starter fire punch could crack boulders. Not at the level of Nidoking's kicks which partially destroy them. But they are enough in this situation to one hit K.O. most of first stage Pokemon.

It would seem this was not the case with this Poliwag.

As even after receiving the punch it slowly started to stand up.

"Finish—!?" The Junior Professor stopped in his tracks as he saw white light starting to consume the Tadpole Pokemon.

"Oh? Now thst is interesting. I might going to add you to the team…" With a smirk, Ray observed the evolution of Charmeleon. His fire starter slightly narrowed his eyes. In his eyes, this finally looked like a proper challenge.

The Tadpole Pokemon form changed considerably. It lost its tail and instead developed a pair of arms and the height increased a little bit. Where it was quite small as Poliwag just above his knees now it was around to his waist.

Considering that Ray is still just ten years old, it is quite small and nibble Pokemon.

"Poliwhirl!!!"

"Good now that you evolved. We will continue our battle."

As the Pokemon trainer said that the wild Pokemon motioned to come at him. It appears some arrogance has developed in the evolved Pokemon.

"Flamethrower!"

Charmeleon didn't hold back as he released a torrent of extremely hot flames.

Poliwhirl answered back with his Water Gun which was much stronger than its pre-evolved form's attack.

The collision of those two attacks cancelled each other and created a steam cloud.

"Dive in with Metal Claw!"

Ray's starter nodded and lunged forward with sharpened claws.

The Tadpole Pokemon for a second was shocked to see the Flame Pokemon just rushing out from the steam cloud.

The attack was a direct hit which sent Water-type tumbling away for a moment. But, it quickly recovered and answered back with Double Slap which pissed Charmeleon even more.

The Junior Professor quickly noticed that his Pokemon was starting to lose its cool and it was time for the trainer to adapt to this kind of situation.

He knows that Fire types can be difficult sometimes… especially the ones with some dragon attributes.

"Counter with Fire Punch back to back!"

Charmeleon roared with agreement as both of his hands ignited with fire.

Poliwhirl swiftly dodged the attack from the right hand but it ended up in the path of the left one.

The punch has sent the Tadpole flying into a tree.

"Now concentrate your Flamethrower into a single line and hit that Poliwhirl!"

Ray quickly ordered to finish off that nuisance of Pokemon. However, this was quite dangerous to use fire directly on a tree.

That's why the Junior Professor is ordering it to be less spread out as possible.

And his Starter understood his trainer's request. that is why the Flamethrower was almost like a beam which rammed into the Water-type which tried to dodge with no success.

"..."

"..."

After the attack ended both the trainer and his Pokemon waited for any sort of move from Poliwhirl.

What they saw was the Tadpole sliding down from the tree to the ground with swirls in its eyes.

'Well, this one is strong and already evolved form. And I have the Water stone too.' Thinking for a bit, Ray decided that it would be a waste to allow such a strong Pokemon to just leave behind like that.

So without wasting much time he pulled out an empty Pokeball and threw it at the unconscious Tadpole Pokemon.

The regular Pokeball sucked Poliwhirl in and the red light blinked a couple of times in the middle before a loud click sound declared a successful capture.

"Nice. Quite a powerful Poliwhirl don't you think?" Ray asked his Starter.

Charmeleon just snorted and looked away. He was still pissed for those slaps.

The Junior Professor simply rolled his eyes and went over to pick up the Pokeball.

He then realised that his other hand was kind of busy holding the Poke Egg container.

'Well, I will check you out later. I might be going need to lock this Pokeball off when I hatch Dratini. I need that space.' For a second Ray thought about the issue at hand.

Honestly, he doesn't even have food prepared for Tadpole-type Pokemon. He wasn't thinking about capturing one in the first place.

After all, he already has a defensive beast in Milotic and soon he will have an attacking beast in Gyarados.

'Well, I can check this after I set up camp close to that waterfall.'

~~~
Ray looked down he saw the waterfall to his right. The stream he was following, slowly turned into a river and then descended into a waterfall. Forming a small lake at the bottom before turning into a river once again.
Junior Professor's gaze swept the surroundings, looking for a way to get down himself. Eventually, he found what he was looking for…
In a distance…
A rough guess is that it's around another 20 to 30 minutes of walking…
"Let's go. We can descend to the valley from over there." As he said that they started walking in that direction.
Since it was mostly an open area there were no Pokemon cluelessly getting in their way. Since they easily saw the walking Fire-type.
Eventually, they ended up In the valley and in front of the small lake.
Ray inspected the water for a moment. It was crystal blue indicating that this might be what he was looking for.
Not only that but the size of the water body is enough to train his Magikarp and Milotic.
After checking out the water Ray released his Pokemon.
With a casual throw of his Pokeballs one after another his Pokemon manifested in front of him. Except for Magikarp who was released into the water.
"Guys we will be camping here for a few days. Chansey holds the Pokemon egg for me. I am going to set up the tent." As the junior professor said that he handed over the container to the Egg Pokemon who nodded at him with a smile.
While Ray was doing his thing his Pokemon spread out to do their thing. Milotic slipped into the crystal clear water while Magikarp already started doing his thing of rapidly swimming from one side to another.
In the meantime, his only land dweller at this moment Charmeleon found a tree and decided to nap under it for a bit.
And his Flyer Pidgeotto decided to stretch his wings.
~~~

After setting his camp Ray decided to feed his Pokemon. While they were eating he pulled out his Pokedex and scanned his newest addition to the team.

[Poliwhirl]

[Tadpole Pokemon]

[Type: Water]

[Ability:Water Absorb]

[Gender: Male]

[Moves: Water Gun, Double Slap, Bubblebeam, Pound, Hypnosis, Mud-Slap]

'Water Absorb? Now that's a convenient ability. In double battles, if I am to use another Water-type I could heal Poliwhirl with Water-type moves.

This could even be considered cheating to some degree. Or more like a smart way of utilising the abilities.' Ray thought about the newest addition to his roster.

Before pocketing his Pokedex and summoning his Pokemon.

With a flash of white, the Pokemon manifested it was still unconscious.

"Chansey can you please heal him?"

The Junior Professor called out his team healer.

The Egg Pokemon walked over to her trainer. At that moment Ray took the egg container from her and went to the side to wait for Poliwhirl to wake up.

The healing process was quite short. As Chansey knows two healing moves which rapidly healed the Tadpole Pokemon.

"Poli?"

Sure enough, the Water-type was back on his feet.

He looked around and noticed the human who had beaten him. The Pokemon casually waved his hand. It was something akin to a greeting.

That moment Ray simply smiled back at the Pokemon.

"Welcome to the team Poliwhirl. I was impressed with your fighting ability. Do want to become strong?" The Junior Professor asked the most… used and maybe even overused line. Which in his opinion fits with this situation anyway.

The Water-type nodded at him and pumped himself up.

"Good! Then I will train you. I have some moves to teach you and I already have two Water-types with me at this moment."

After hearing that Poliwhirl was even happier! The human just caught him and they already discussing moves and other stuff!

As they say, right down to business!

Once the Introductions were over Poliwhirl got some basic food before getting to the training.

At the moment training was simple. He had to hit Magikarp. At first, the Tadpole Pokemon thought this was going to be easy. But it wasn't… for one. The Fish Pokemon was in the water and Water Gun strength would dissipate upon contact with the body of water. This means more power behind the blast was needed!

This was not the first hurdle! The first one was to hit the Pokemon first! And only then care if there was damage or not!

Such an exercise made Poliwhirl excited! This was so simple yet so hard to do!

Not only that but this was an increase in difficulty for Magikarp as well. The Fish Pokemon now had to deal with two enemies who trying to hit him!

"This training will lead you two to learn Hydro Pump so don't hold back and try to tap more into your Water energy!" As Ray said he prepared for his thing as well.

He changed into his swimming wear and walked where the waterfall was with Dratini's egg.

Now he didn't though it going to take just a few minutes for it to hatch.

Maybe a few hours or a day? Since the egg has been around for years as Christopher, the daycare guy said.

But…it has been…

3 days already!

Ray has been camping for around 3 days and a half. He has had food for around 10 days. 3 of them already has passed. So he will stay for another 4 days before moving on and returning to the journey and trying to hatch the egg later.

While the egg hatching is important his Pokemon were not lazing around.

Charmeleon finally picked up Fire Blast, Pidgeotto was getting close to Air Cutter, it's a move which requires extremely strong wings which one could say only a Pidgeot should learn. But, if he is to learn now does it mean he is closer to evolving?

Then his Water-types which he has 3 now.

Both Milotic and Poliwhirl were close to learning Hydro Pump, Milotic being closer as the Tender Pokemon had a stronger body and could generate more water.

What is lacking is the explosiveness of the move, which is quite difficult for the Water-types to pick it up.

However, the most intriguing thing was that Magikarp picked up its last available move for its species.

Double-Edge. Is a move which Magikarp picks up when he is level 50. That's in the game, but if one looks at this Pokemon anyone could see that this Fish Pokemon was already bigger them most of its fellow Magikarps.

As Ray was thinking about his Fish Pokemon he noticed his Water-type just stopped in the middle of the small lake…

Both Milotic and Poliwhirl stopped with their Water Gun attacks and looked curiously at Magikarp.

The next moment extremely blinding light consumed the whole of the lake which originated from Magikarp.

The Fish Pokemon body started to expand and grow at an extremely fast pace.

It was evolving! And since the difference between Magikarp and Gyarados in size is enormous. The amount of energy released is shocking to look at!

None of the previous Ray's Pokemon released this much power upon their evolutions!

Sure enough, the evolution was over and newly evolved Gyarados introduced himself to the world!

*ROAR*

Ray looked at the massive blue Atrocious Pokemon. It was a whopping 7 to 8 metres long!

Without wasting much time the Junior Professor got up on his feet and walked to the newly evolved Water/Flying-type Pokemon.

Gyarados moved his head and looked at his trainer. The massive serpentine Pokemon leaned forward and wanted to… cuddle of all things.

Which made Ray slightly sweatdrop with his behaviour.

Still, the Pokemon trainer patted the massive Pokemon.

"Now that you evolved we can start training your moves." The Junior Professor said that with quite an excited tone.

His Magikarp built up his muscles which allowed the Fish Pokemon to keep all this excess energy stored which was used to grow into this massive Gyarados… which is speculation on the trainer's part.

Ray can see just how powerful his Atrocious Pokemon is looking.

The Water/Flying-type slowly nodded at him. In the meantime, the Pallet Native used this opportunity to scan the Pokemon.

[Gyarados]

[Atrocious Pokemon]

[Type: Water/Flying]

[Ability: Intimidate]

[Gender: Male]

[Moves: Splash, Tackle, Double-Edge, Hyper Beam]

"Hyper Beam? Upon evolution… you learn Hyper Beam? Damn…" Ray was more than a little bit baffled. Gyarados learning Hyper Beam is not a major thing…When it learns from pure rage. There are hundreds if not thousands of recorded cases of that.

Truth be told it should be a separate move when they do that. They use Hyper Beam like a mini-gun without any delay between uses.

But seeing one learn like this from pure training…It's quite impressive. This means the amount of energy Magikarp had is impressive to behold.

'Well, he didn't evolve until he learned Double-Edge.'

"Good. Why don't we test it out to see how good you are?" As Ray said that the massive Atrocious Pokemon nodded. There was a glint in his eyes.

Gyarados wants to fight!

"Then let's do it. Poliwhirl! You are up!"

Sure enough, the Tadpole Pokemon was ready for some action. However, when he saw his opponent he slightly inched back.

Gyarados' Intimidate ability was already showing its fangs.

"Poliwhirl use Water Gun! Gyarados try dodging that and use Tackle!"

Hearing the commands the Water-type unleashed the Water-based attack while Gyarados quite simply moved its serpentine body to the side and lunged forward like a viper.

The difference from a viper was that this Pokemon is enormous!

"Dodge, Poliwhirl!"

The Tadpole Pokemon quickly dodged to the side but Gyarados was on the hunt. Even when a portion of its body was on the land by this point it could still move quite effortlessly.

"Now use Bubblebeam and Gyarados try hitting him with your tail. Let's see how good you are using your new limb!"

The Atrocious Pokemon nodded while Poliwhirl opened fire with a multitude of bubbles rushing at the Water/Flying-type.

It was a direct hit but the massive serpentine Pokemon felt nothing from the attack. What happened next was a massive tail swiping the Tadpole Pokemon away towards a tree.

"Good! Now show me your Hyper Beam!"

A ball of orange energy gathered in Gyarados mouth before it was released at struggling Poliwhirl.

It was a direct hit and the Water-type was out of commission.

"Now this is an impressive display of power." As Ray said that from the sidelines Chansey already rushed towards Poliwhirl and started healing him while the Pokemon Trainer was thinking over the battle he just saw.

~~~~~~Later~~~~~~
A few more days have passed since Magikarp has evolved. Ren has taught his newly evolved Pokemon Ice Beam, Water Pulse, via the T.M's. And it quite effortlessly learned Water Gun on its own and now is very close to picking up Hydro Pump.
The Atrocious Pokemon has all the power it could need. The only thing holding back is practice and its utilisation.
Apart from that, the Junior Professor is thinking of teaching some close-range moves. Bite, Crunch, Surf, Aqua Tail.
After all, the Atrocious Pokemon's speciality is not ranged moves but physical ones.
While it was incredible to finally teach his own Gyarados all the moves. He didn't stick just with him as he taught the very same T.M.'s moves to Poliwhirl.
The Tadpole Pokemon was very excited to learn new stuff. He was not even bothered that all of Ray's Pokemons beat him up in sparring matches.
It only made the Water-type more excited to get stronger.
However, apart from all the excitement, the main goal has not been achieved.
And Ray was running out of time.
Then on the sixth day… the egg finally twitched!
To 'help' this more Ray went into the water and slowly brushed the egg through it. Make sure to be close to the waterfall but not too close.
Eventually, the egg started to glow. All the Pokemons stopped with their exercises and instead looked at the source of the light.
The Water-types quickly moved in closer. Milotic and Poliwhirl looked from Ray's side while Gyarados with its towering size looked from above.
The glow receded and instead of the egg, it was a small blue serpentine Pokemon. It was incredibly cute. With a pair of small wings-like appendices on the side of its head.
It looked directly at Ray with a slightly confused look before slowly slithering on him and coiling in his lap.
And then… just falling asleep.
"...So cute…" The Pallet Native said with a slightly awed, excited and giddy tone. He has never seen something this cute before!
His three Pokemon's nodded at him.
After getting over this excitement Ray gently carried the sleeping Pokemon to his camp and pulled out his Pokedex.
He then pointed the camera lens at the sleeping form of his newly hatched Pokemon.
[Dratini]
[Dragon Pokemon]
[Type: Dragon]
[Ability: Shed Skin]
[Gender: Male]
[Moves: Wrap, Leer, Thunder Wave]
"Hoh? Thunder Wave already? That's convenient." Ray said to himself with a thoughtful look. This is good. He can work with this.
After checking the newly hatched Pokemon, the Junior Professor pulled out an empty Pokeball and captured the sleeping Dratini.
Once the capture was successful the Pokeball turned grey as it was locked away.
The Pallet native didn't bother with this at the moment. Instead, he went over to dry himself and started writing a report to Professor Oak about the hatching methods for rarer Pokemon.
His essay on Pokemon nature was ready. The only thing he needs to do is send it to Professor himself to check it out. Ray is hoping this stuff will help people understand their Pokemon more.
If this gets recognised by the Professors he gonna release another book. Well, more like a booklet or short guidebook.
For now, he needs to get to a Pokemon Centre before he can send it to Professor Oak.
Since his Dratini has hatched there is no point in sticking in this location so Ray brough everyone back to the camp.
After getting their meals it was time to return on the road.
~~~~~~Pallet Town~~~~~~

"Hmm? Another update? Did he catch something again?" Professor Oak curiously said to himself as he just got a notification on one of his favourite trainers.

As he was drinking his coffee he pressed on the notification and a window popped in the front. The Pallet Region Professor saw that it was a Pokemon catch update.

With a curious look, he pressed on it and saw the image of the Pokemon.

For a second his eyes widened and some of the coffee went into the wrong place…

*Cough**Cough**Cough*

At that moment, the aged Professor coughed several times hard, before getting the coffee out.

What he saw on the screen was a Dratini! A newborn Dragon-type! And Ray got it so early in his training career!

This is simply incredible!

Quickly he checked what he could from the profile page.

Its size and moves.

"I see… so this is why he got a Poliwhirl and his Magikarp evolved as well." Professor Oak stroked his chin he got a general idea of where his assistant was at this moment.

He got Dratini's egg and then proceeded to hatch it. In the process, he captured a strong-looking Poliwhirl and his Magikarp evolved as well.

This is most likely the reason why he has not communicated with him yet.

After checking the new catches Professor proceeded to giddily wait for Ray to call him!

He can't wait to discuss the Dragon-type he hatched and captured.

~~~
"Ray my boy! It's good to finally see you! Can I see it!?" Professor quickly got to the point which made Ray on the other side of the camera slightly caught off guard.
"See what?"
"Your Dratini of course! Do you know how rare is this Pokemon!?" The Professor from Pallet Town said with a raised eyebrow.
"Oh. Right! He is with Nurse Joy at the moment. She is doing basic scans on him. The egg was several years old, and only recently I hatched it next to a freshwater lake with a strong Waterfall."
Ray's words made Professor Oak nod. Yes, that sounds like their habitat.
"I did a basic report on this. The issue of the massive amount of eggs in the Pokemon Daycare centre is quite concerning. So I wrote this. Maybe, the Pokemon League should check it over?"
The older Professor had a thoughtful look for a moment. He did remember someone mentioning the amount of eggs Daycare centres have.
"Send it over." Professor then remembered the project the Junior Professor was doing." And how has that essay been going along?"
Ray only smiled upon hearing that.
"It's done. I will send it via email alongside the report."
"Wonderful. What is next on your mind? Now that you done with Pokemon natures?"
"Several ideas. The recent development of resurrected prehistoric Pokemon and the massive amount of energy, Pokemon like Magikarp release upon their evolution."
"I see… I have been wondering about them for some time as well. Few Magikarps have evolved in my ranch after all. And their light of evolution is the brightest I have ever seen." Professor said that while reminiscing about it.
"Indeed. Mine evolved in the middle of a small lake. The light was powerful enough to brighten the whole body of water."
"Impressive. I checked the size of your Gyarados. It's over 1.5 metres longer than a regular one. I assume the training you did cause him to reach a bigger size?" Professor questioned for a bit.
"This is what I am thinking. The muscles he developed allowed him to keep more energy which he used to evolve.
After the evolution was done I made him fight several times with Milotic, Charmeleon, Poliwhirl, and Pidgeotto. He has beaten all of them."
Ray's explanation made Professor slightly baffled.
"Even… Milotic? Their moves should barely do any damage to each other."
"Yes. The sheer size of Gyarados and its huge physical strength overwhelmed my Milotic."
"Even when you made her use Ice Beam? The damage from that move deals a regular amount of damage." The professor questioned this with curiosity and no small amount of disbelief.
"Indeed. Gyarados tanked that damage with a small amount of damage."
"...Incredible. I want you to write a report on your Gyarados. What you just told me sounds like your Magikarp skipped multiple years of training upon its evolution.
While Gyarados are deadly Pokemon they do have specific weaknesses. I do wish to see how good he stacks up against Electric-types." Professor Oak said while he had a thoughtful look.
On the other hand, Ray grimaced for a second. He doesn't want to fry his Atrocious Pokemon…
"My next destination is the abandoned power plant. I am going to capture a few Electric-types just as you mentioned." The Junior Professor mentioned his next destination.
"Good. Your roster needs those. Though. You should be careful around that place." Professor Oak for second got quite serious.
"Oh? Something I should know about it?"
"There are rumours that the Power Plant sometimes is a roosting place for one of Kanto Titans." The Kanto regional Professor dropped a tidbit about the Power Plant which was something Ray already knew from his previous life. However, not every day do you hear a world-class Professor talking about a Legendary Pokemon.
"Zapdos? I wonder… could I get some pictures of him if he is there?" The Pallet Native said that with a somewhat dreamy tone.
Oh, he wants to see one! He saw Legendaries often in his previous life. But that's just a game or anime. Nothing like now!
"Be careful Ray my boy. If you make it angry he will fry you. Electric Pokemon are dangerous, especially Legendaries. It is said that Zapdos could create a thunderstorm with nothing but a flap of its wings."
"I know. This is why I will be bringing all of my Ground-types just in case.
Anyway, Professor. I will be sending Gyarados and Milotic to you. I want you to send me my Trapinch back." Ray quickly changed the theme of conversation.
"Of course. Let me fetch him." Professor nodded at him while moving away from the screen to transfer the Pokemon to the Junior Professor.
