Chapter 15
In the end, Ray has spent one extra day in Cerulean. The reason for that was that he needed to wait for his postage with Gravity T.M. to arrive.
However, he didn't waste that day away. He spent most of it in the training field with his Pokemon.
He taught Nidoking both Ice Beam and Earthquake. Both are quite important as his Drill Pokemon got exposed to Ground and Ice energies.
Once he got the hang of these moves Ray started instructing on a Fighting-type move: Brick Break.
A quite specific move. For one he will learn variants like Karate Chop and most likely Mega Punch.
From Mega Punch, the Drill Pokemon will be able to branch out and learn Ice Punch. Since the Poison/Ground type already knows Ice Beam.
And from Earthquake he will branch out to learn Earth Power. This move can be considered Nidoking's signature move in a sense.
As in a few main games, this is the only move this Pokemon will learn as Nidoking. That's the thing about game versions as once you use the stone evolution the Pokemon doesn't learn much with the level-ups.
A trade-off of sorts. You sacrifice learning moves with levels but you get the final form of the Pokemon with a stone.
But, it's quite different in the world he is living in. The Pokemon can still learn without outside help but the closer one is to the final form the harder it is for the Pokemon to learn new moves.
"Hmm?" Ray stopped with his thoughts as he saw… a huge tent not far from the crossroads. The crossroads is quite a big one here.
As he left the Cerulean City, the Kanto plains started. Well, calling it plains is a stretch, as there are always some hills in between. But this area can be considered plains and the biggest population of Kanto is centred in this stretch.
While the crossroads diverge into three routes. One can take one straight to Saffron, the one Ray is going to take will take him to Lavender City where he is planning to catch a Gastly.
And before that, he wants to get his hands on Electric-type as well.
But, before that, he found something akin to the circus tent next to the road.
"What is this?" He looked around, his eyes ended up on a sign which said: 'A.J's Gym!' Next to this sign, there is another sign which says: 'Victory streak: 97'.
"Another weirdo. Why I am the one who meets them?" He said with a sigh. He then had a thoughtful look. Making up his mind he decided to fight this guy.
If this guy has a 97-win streak, then he should be not bad.
Making up his mind Ray entered this circus-looking tent.
What he found inside was a makeshift training camp.
In the air, he saw a Beedrill facing a Butterfree. On the ground, there were three Ratata's training with something akin to weighted suits.
The most baffling one is seeing Sandshrew diving into a pool.
Then of course the trainer himself is using a whip. But, from the looks of it… he is cosplaying as a circus dude? Since he doesn't hit any of the Pokemons.
As Ray was approaching him the trainer noticed him.
"Ah, another challenger! You going to be my 98 one!" He said quite arrogantly.
Well, it is understandable since he won 97 times in a row.
"Sure. Let's battle."
The Junior Professor didn't mind the arrogance. He is more interested in fighting those Pokemon's this guy is training.
"Name is A.J!" The guy introduced himself, before looking towards where his Mouse Pokemon was.
"Sandshrew! You are up!" The circus cosplayer said that while smacking the whip into the ground.
Ray only raised his eyebrow seeing this. Is this guy using the whip strikes to command his Pokemon?
Well, he can see how this guy does in battle.
Moments later the ground-type walked over in front of his trainer. The circus guy was ready for the battle.
"One Pokemon each?" The Junior Professor asked as he pulled out his Pokeball.
"Yep! One vs One! Regular rules."
"Alright, then I choose my Trapinch!" As the Pallet Native said that, he casually threw his Pokeball, and his ground-type from Hoenn manifested in front of him.
"...What is this Pokemon? That's not Kanto native!" The cosplayer said with confusion.
"Nope. It's Pokemon first registered in Hoenn." Ray said that as he crossed his arms, before explaining some more.
"It's Ground-type just like your Sandshrew."
"I see! Even if you have a foreign Pokemon, It won't going to help!" A.J. wasn't bothered by the fact that he was facing a Pokemon he had no idea of!
From a simple glance, he can see that this Ground-type is slow. So, he can use his Sandshrew faster speed to outdo this one!
"Let's start! Sandshrew! Use Fissure!"
Ray raised his eyebrow upon hearing that. Is this guy using a one-shot move from the beginning?
"Trapinch run forward into the attack! Then jump!"
A.J.'s eyes widened for a bit. Is this guy ordering his Pokemon to get knocked out!?
Sure enough, the small Ant Pit Pokemon rushed forward and then jumped last moment, dodging the cracked earth.
"Now use Bite!"
"Defensive Curl Sandshrew!" The Circus guy ordered quickly.
"That's a mistake. Trapinch are notorious for their bites." Ray said with a grin.
Trapinch opened his jaws and bit the Mouse Pokemon. That moment the ground-type screamed in pain when the Ant Pit Pokemon bite with its massive jaws.
"Shake it off! Sandshrew!" A.J. quickly ordered in some panic. He realised that this Pokemon-biting power is off the charts!
However, it didn't go as well planned as the circus guy thought.
It took some time for the Mouse Pokemon to remove the Ant Pit Pokemon from his body. It sends it flying away.
"Now use Dig into Bite." Ray quite casually ordered the next move after watching the struggle.
A.J. looked at this with some bafflement as he saw Trapinch start digging the moment it landed on the ground.
"Trapinch are desert hunters. They dig pits and wait for their prey. Quite different from what Sandshrew species do with their digging."
"Tsk! Sandshrew use your Dig!"
The Mouse Pokemon quickly nodded and started digging, but by that point, the jaws of Ant Pit Pokemon erupted from the ground and bit the fellow Ground-type.
This time however Trapinch didn't bite from a jump, but from the ground. Its small feet were touching the ground and could use more force!
"Now throw him away!" Ray ordered as he saw that this worked. His Trapinch has a knack for that depth hunter thing. Which is quite vital in this kind of battle. Especially since the Pokemon doesn't have great walking speed.
The Ant Pit Pokemon listened to the order and threw the Mouse Pokemon like a ragdoll to the side.
"NO SANDSHREW!"
The Ground-type flew several metres before crashing into the ground.
Slowly it started to get up. Those three hits on him have dealt quite a bit of damage. To the point that it can barely move.
"Trapinch use Dig once more!"
Ray ordered his Pokemon to finish the Mouse Pokemon off.
By this point A.J. had sweat rolling from his forehead. His Pokemon can barely move and Trapinch was already underground!
"Damn, Sandshrew try to feel where that Pokemon is! Then dodge very last moment!"
As the circus guy instructed his Pokemon nodded. Regardless of listening to his trainer, one can't truly dodge while being barely conscious.
Still, Sandshrew tried to dodge but he was too slow. Trapinch erupted from the ground and bit the fellow Ground-type once more.
Then he threw the Mouse Pokemon aside. This time Sandshrew didn't stand up anymore. There were swirls in the Ground-type eyes.
"And that's the end. Your Fissure move was quite a shock. I haven't seen a Sandshrew who can use such a move before." Ray commented off-hand as he looked at the knocked-out Mouse Pokemon.
*Sigh*
"Here goes my winning streak." A.J. sighed as he recalled his Ground-type.
"Not bad. It's a good sign that I only lost because I was fighting Pokemon I had never seen before.
Still, though you haven't introduced yourself." The circus guy now remembered that he didn't know the name of the guy who beat him!
"Well, you didn't ask. My name is Ray. Thanks for the battle, it was the first Trapinch battle. He needed that experience." As the Junior Professor said that his Ant Pit Pokemon slightly puffed himself. He won his first battle!
"I-I see. Good to hear." The circus guy didn't know how to feel about this. He was on a nearly 100 winning streak then this guy pulls over and defeats him with Pokemon who didn't have previous experience in battles between Trainers?
Is this some sort of joke? This makes his previous winning streak lose its meaning. Was he fighting complete newbies before?
"Anyway, thanks again." As Ray said that he recalled his Ground-type and started leaving.
A.J. sighed and walked back to his Pokemon and healed his partner. Then… return to his training!
~~~
After ending the guy's winning streak Ry took the route towards Lavender Town where he will get his Ghost-type.
The journey is going to be around two weeks on foot. However unlike previous times. There are a bunch of Pokemon centres scattered on the path there.
Ray is planning to divert from the route as well because he wants to visit the abandoned power plant, and the daycare centre as well.
This daycare is quite special because one can adopt a Pokemon egg of their choice. Of course, it's not as easy as just going there and asking for an egg.
The trainer has to show their identification details. The system will scan it and the daycare workers will know if the person is reliable enough to adopt a Pokemon egg. The reason for Ray to do that is to see if he can find any rare Pokemon there.
Now, many don't know how to identify what a Pokemon egg is. The leading Professor for this branch of Pokemon study is Professor Elm from Johto.
And he is partially right that egg colour can tell you what Pokemon it is. But one needs to take a step further and compare Pokemon's first stage looks to the egg.
For example, Magby's egg would have lighter red and some yellow patterns on its egg. But, it can get confusing as some Pokemon don't stick to their natural colouring. The best examples would be Pseudo Legendaries, Dragon-types, and even some Pokemon from water types that are not blue. Like Feebas or Magikarp.
However, people know how to dodge an egg of a Magikarp, since it's recorded in quite a detail. As this Pokemon can be found in all corners of the world, it has been studied to a large degree by most Professors and recorded how it looks.
Regardless of all that, this daycare centre is on his route so it's good to check it out and maybe find a good Pokemon to add to his roster.
~~~
The journey progressed at quite a good pace. Ray had a schedule he liked to follow. Wake up, have breakfast with Pokemon, and walk for half a day. Doing some light training, dinner, and then walking for a few more hours. Finding a place to sleep if it's a Pokemon Centre then stay there.
If it's a Pokemon Centre then Ray can rotate his team.
With Pokemon training, things started to get somewhat interesting.
Since Nidoking evolution, his Drill Pokemon took the crown of the strongest member of his team.
Second is Milotic for her incredible ability to take damage.
This made his Charmeleon and Pidgeotto train even harder. As both of them are the oldest Pokemon. Charmeleon is the Starter and Pidgeotto is the first-ever wild Pokemon of Ray which he got before even becoming a trainer.
These two could not accept the fact that this Drill Pokemon was now the strongest.
However, it didn't come without a price for Nidoking as the Poison/Ground type is now having a harder time learning new moves.
Moving energy from his legs to his hands and then turning it into a move is coming with some difficulties.
After observing this Ray has decided to leave Fighting-type energy for now and make sure his Nidoking is focusing on his main energies. The Ground-type more specifically.
Earth Power is the best move to make the Pokemon practise his hands. As is shown Nidoking smashes his hand into the ground to release the energy.
Apart from Nidoking, the Junior Professor taught Trapinch Earthquake. In a sense, he believes this will make the Pokemon practise a large amount of Ground-type energy.
At first, Earthquake will be weak as the Pokemon is small. But the strength is never the real reason for teaching the move. The real reason is it will accelerate the growth of Trapinch.
Then other Pokemon like Onix started learning how to channel the Steel-type energy into his head. It was not hard for the Rock Snake Pokemon as he already knew how to use Iron Tail and the Rock/Ground-type had a thing for smashing heads into things.
Ray was very satisfied with his Onix, as he only spent a few days teaching Iron Head. He even taught him Earthquake.
The Junior Professor quickly noticed how his Onix became one of the most powerful Pokemon in his team. The sheer size of the Rock Snake Pokemon mitigates the evolution of his Nidoking. However, the Drill Pokemon was still victorious because of his agility and experience.
Where these Pokemons fought each other Ray made his Spikes Pokemon do some other type of training. And that was training the Ground/Rock types to think in the heat of battle.
The Pallet Native after all wants his Rhyhorn to evolve so this type of training was a priority.
Then it was Magikarp and Milotic training. The Tender Pokemon is practising her aim while the Fish Pokemon is training his muscles and trying to hit Milotic with Tackle.
Others like Pidgeotto have learned Brave Bird, and now switched to learning Air Cutter
Charmeleon is halfway with Fire Blast, he can finally gather the energy and release it but still struggling to form the kanji for fire. For some reason, the Fire Blast becomes more powerful if it can make the flame turn into the flaming kanji for fire.
While Pawniard was practising his blade work. It's always satisfying for Ray to see Pawniard work the blade work. He knows that this will eventually lead the Dark/Steel Pokemon to learn Sword Dance.
Of course, that is in the long run as at the moment the Sharp Blade Pokemon is mastering Slash from different angles and trying to incorporate Dark-type into it. Which would lead to Night Slash.
All that's combined with Chansey's healing and Gravity. Ray didn't need to worry about his Pokemon falling unconscious.
"Hmm?" Ray looked a the e-mail he just got. The Pallet Native was in his thoughts as he was remembering his Pokemon training and their natures. He was quite close to finishing his essay on Pokemon nature, and now he is adjusting his training on their personalities.
However, he got distracted by an e-mail. So, he switched the windows and checked the mail.
A small smile appeared on his face. He didn't mention that before. Neither to his mother nor Professor how he is keeping close contact…with a girl!
The Electric-type trainer from Unova was sending her updates on how she was using his methods to train her Pokemon.
This shows how she was self-conscious to get these 'cheats'.
Not trying to misuse anything she learned from him.
Of course over the week and a half… her emails started to include some simple questions.
Which is amusing to some extent. She was gaining confidence? Well, he intended to make her interested and it would seem he has succeeded.
Sure enough, he answered back to her 'report' which was more or less an excuse to write to him.
~~~
Ray looked at the ranch stretching quite a bit. It has all sorts of Pokemon resting, playing, and eating. This was the Pokemon Daycare Centre.
From a casual look, he could see that most of the Pokemon were from Kanto. There were some from Johto. And a few from Hoenn. But none from Sinnoh or other further regions.
This gives him some ideas of how well this Region is connected with other ones.
Hoenn is known for its relaxing beaches. So it's no surprise that some people go there and capture some Pokemon.
Simply put most normal trainers don't leave Pokemon here. Only someone who for one doesn't do battles much, and is busy with normal lives.
But, this is not all most who leave their Pokemon here can be elite trainers who started their families and have too many Pokemon. So they leave them here. Which could lead to the birth of some eggs.
This is what he is betting on. Some Elite trainers have rare Pokemon which if the eggs are left behind the daycare will take care of it.
Which he can adopt and raise as his own. He remembered that this was the place where May got her Eevee egg. So, this means his idea is not far to stretch.
Not that he has very high hopes. Sure, he might get a Scyther egg or some other Hoenn Pokemon. Regardless, this place is next on his route so why not check it out?
Walking through the main entrance and meeting a girl around his age taking care of some first-stage Pokemon.
"Hmm? Hello! How can I help you?" She greeted him first after seeing him pass through the main doors.
"Oh hey, I am Ray from Pallet Town…" Before he could finish his Introduction, the girl's eyes went wide.
"DAD! THE RAY IS HERE!" The girl nearly squealed saying that.
The Pallet Native stopped in his tracks from her voice.
'I am that famous? Or she is exaggerating?'
Sure enough, a man walked in, he was more on the 'loves to eat' side, not too fat… but still, there was a stomach. He has a towel on his neck and short hair. Looked like a classic farmer minus the equipment.
"You truly are Ray?" He asked with disbelief and with wide eyes.
'Damn… people relax…'
"Yeah? I have my ID with me…" The Pallet Native pulled out his Pokedex and pressed a few buttons there.
Moments later, a robotic voice started to explain.
[This Pokedex is issued by Professor Samuel Oak to his sponsored trainer and Junior Professor Ray from Pallet Town.]
"So you are him! This is incredible! How may I assist you!?"
"I was wondering if I could get a Pokemon Egg. I have read that Daycare centres, especially in this part of Kanto have full storage of eggs." The Junior Professor explained why he was there.
"Oh? We do have a whole building of them. Few of them appear every week or so."
Ray nodded hearing that. The mystery of Pokemon Eggs… according to the Pokemon League sources no one ever saw how Pokemon eggs are laid or how it is done. Honestly, it's one of the biggest mysteries in Pokemon World.
Not even Psychic Pokemon say anything about it… its strange and even amusing to some level.
"So it is possible? I was thinking of researching and observing a Pokemon from birth to full-grown. Professor Oak said it's one of the milestones a Pokemon Professor should do."
Which it is, as Professor raised several of those in his life.
"Of course! It will be an honour to be part of your research!"
Ray's eyebrow slightly twitched. He is not used to such… anti-cynical society… maybe he should have spent more time in Veridian City before starting his journey. Hell, he even prepared a speech to get an egg…
And so the Pokemon daycare owner by name Christopher took the Junior Professor to the building next to the main one.
The Pallet Native's eyes went wide when he saw… rows and rows of eggs on shelves. There are no names or tags of species on them only serial numbers.
'That's a lot of eggs…'
"Do you guys have any idea which egg hatches into which Pokemon?
"I have to some extent. We observe when a Pokemon egg hatches and record what Pokemon it is. This section here is the Pokemon who are not hatching any time soon. Some of them have not hatched for years." He said that with a sad tone about eggs that didn't hatch for years.
Ray instantly walked there. He knows that some eggs require special treatment.
A smirk appeared on his face when he saw a light blue egg with some white markings on it.
Now this one here is a find!!! He has struck gold!
"That's because these eggs require special conditions… or places where they could hatch." The Junior Professor said with a knowing look.
"...I never thought about it. You have some idea what Pokemon these are?" the Daycare owner asked him.
"These Pokemon here are on the rarer side. Some of them require different care. Like this one here. This one here is Magby. If we follow what we know about the Magmar line of evolution then we know that they live in volcanic places." As Ray said that he looked at Christopher.
"This means it requires much greater heat to hatch it. While this one here…" He walked closer to the blue egg with white dots.
"Requires freshwater stream, with a small waterfall next to it most likely as well."
"...I see… I see… this makes sense… we never thought about specific habits before!" The daycare centre owner had a look of realisation as he understood what the Junior Professor had in mind.
The Pallet Native nodded at the older man before continuing to talk.
"Well, it is just my idea. Regardless, I want this egg here." He pointed at the light blue egg with white spots.
"Hmm, sure thing. Do you have any idea what Pokemon it is?"
"It's Dratini."
~~~
Ray was walking around and checking other Pokemon eggs as he was holding the incubator to the Dratini's egg. Well, he is 70% sure it's Dratini's egg.
He saw at least from the colourings, several interesting Pokemon. Like Scyther, Vulpix, Growlithe. The Normal type ones like Meowth. Or some of the Fairy-types.
However, he won't be taking any of them. It would be good to have any of those. But… having Dratini's egg. Is the greatest catch of them all.
Taking care of a few eggs at a time can be annoying especially since he likes his mobility.
As he was walking his eyes eventually settled on a light yellow egg with a pair of pink marks on it.
The Pallet Native stopped in his tracks as he looked at this egg.
"Oh, thinking to take this one as well?"
"No… I am thinking this one would be nice to one girl who loves Electric types." Ray said that as he realised that this would be a very great gift to her.
"I see…I SEE. As expected from the youngest Professor in history! Already thinking that far ahead!" The man nodded multiple times while saying that. He had a grin on his face.
"Very well! You can send this egg to this girl. It will be a nice gift. It is known that girls love Pikachu line." He said that sagely.
"Indeed. Especially since she is in Unova."
"Hoho. That's even better." The older man nodded. This was even better. Unova is a region with Pokemon very different from the rest of the world.
So for a Unovan Pokemon to be in Kanto is very rare. The same works for Kanto Pokemon in Unova.
This means just by sending this egg to her she will have a very rare Pokemon.
"You have my thanks, Christopher. I will set up a pick up for this egg."
"Don't mention it. Your pick-up just freed some space. The amount of eggs we gaining is increasing. But, what you just said might help me hatch more of these eggs giving me even more space."
Ray just nodded at him. Yep, once those eggs are hatched, these Pokemon can be given to Rangers and they can release them to their specific habitat.
One thing for sure is the amount of funds this kind of organisation gets is on a completely different level than any other organisation.
Not only regional government support them but leagues as well. Hell, most of the time Champions are part of the Rangers and work with them.
"Happy to help. This egg is more than enough." Ray said that while motioning towards the Dratini's egg.
He then pulled out his Pokenav and contacted the Pigeot Express for a pickup and delivery.
~~~~~~Unova~~~~~~
"Hmm? Did you hear something?"
"Umm? What?"
"It sounded like a sonic boom. A Flying-type perhaps?"
The black-haired girl just shrugged at her best friend and returned to looking at the laptop screen.
There was a small grin on her face. She was writing an email to her new chat buddy. She can't believe her simple chat escalated to this level of conversation.
Maybe what Skyla said about him liking her to some extent is true? Regardless of that, she won't be losing this opportunity to be friends with one of the future premier Pokemon Researchers of the world!
*Gasp*
"Look! That's a courier from Kanto!!!" Skyla forced her friend to look at someone who was dressed in warm clothes with goggles and a scarf… this guy had a container of some sort…
"You haven't seen a courier before?" Elesa asked as if her friend just left her cave and had not seen civilization.
"No, you silly girl! This guy is from Kanto! Do you know how far is Kanto!?"
"Yeah, I know what of it?"
"These guys use Pidgeots to deliver stuff! This means this guy just crossed continents to deliver something on top of his Pokemon!" Shyla said with stars in her eyes.
Now Elesa realised why her friend was like that… Pidgeot… a Bird from Kanto.
A Majestic bird, one of the fastest creatures in the world. If it's true then it means someone needed something urgent…
The black-haired girl's eyes went to the courier. By this point, her friend already left outside to see if Pidgeot was outside.
Then the Electric-type trainer heard an announcement which sent goosebumps through her whole body.
"Trainer Elesa, there is a package for you. Please come to reception."
The girl gingerly got up from her seat. While she was moving slowly her brain was thinking thousands of things rapidly.
She recalled that Ray asked some things where she was at the moment.
At that time she thought nothing about it. Since he asked what Pokemon are in her location. But turns out he wanted to know where she was!
Or she was overthinking!? Well, it doesn't matter at this point!
The girl walked over to the reception. Nurse Joy like always was smiling and the courier was grinning at her.
"I-I am here Nurse Joy. You said something about delivery?" Elesa asked with a nervous tone. Her nervousness is coming from the fact that she doesn't quite know what is going on.
"Yes! A delivery for you from Kanto! Of all places!" The Nurse was quite baffled that someone would deliver something from the other side of the globe!
"Here you go, young lady." The courier handed over the container to the very baffled girl.
"Umm…umm…do you know what this is?" She asked curiously.
"Heh? He didn't say anything? A surprise? I see. Well, I picked it up from the daycare centre. The one who hired me is Ray from Pallet Town."
That moment Nurse Joy heard that she gasped silly. While Elesa's eyes went big for a second.
From the daycare centre? Aren't those places where people leave Pokemon to watch over?
"All I can say is that it's a Pokemon egg." The courier then looked at the baffled Nurse Joy.
"Can I take one of the empty rooms?"
"O-Of course! Thank you for your hard work!" The Nurse quickly got herself together and went over to register a room then quickly picked up the keys and handed them over to the courier.
While Elesa looked at the container.
'Did Ray gift me a Pokemon egg?' She asked herself with disbelief.
"Do you want me to do some checkups on the egg?" Nurse Joy asked the Electric-type Pokemon Trainer.
"Oh! Sure! Please do!" The black-haired girl quickly checked how the containers could be opened.
"Presses those two buttons at the same time to open it." The nurse clarified how to do it as she saw that the girl was struggling.
"O-Okay!"
Sure enough, the container was opened. Elesa quickly handed over the egg. But she kept the letter which was inside.
She quickly opened the letter which was addressed to her and started reading.
[I have heard that girls in Kanto like this specific line of Pokemon. Don't worry it's Electric-type and it's yours.
Best regards, Ray.]
Elesa's eyes widened as she saw a simple drawing of… a Pikachu.
She realised that it was a hint of what kind of species this Pokemon going to be!
"ELESA!!!"
But then the girl was snapped out of her thoughts when she heard her best friend approaching with a jealous look.
