“I wonder what the origin of Kazuki's name is?”

One night, Hiuri asked me such a question while drinking a smoothie.

The smoothie I prepared today is a fruit-based smoothie packed with as many sweet things as possible. Hiuri likes it, but it's a little too sweet for me.

“My name’s origin?”
“Yes.”

It's unclear what made her suddenly want to ask such a thing, but I tell her what I know.

“I think the origin of my name was something like ‘May you grow straight like a single tree.’ The last time I heard about it was when I was in elementary school, so I only vaguely remembered it.”* (T/N: Kazuki, 一樹. Literally means one tree.)

If people ask if I am growing up straight as my parents wished... to be honest, I'm not very confident about it.
I am probably certainly not straight forward since I am talking with someone who is my girlfriend only inside the dream like this. It's fine since I'm happy with this though.

“Why did you ask so suddenly?”
“I was just curious. There's no deep meaning behind it.”

Hiuri muttered while drinking the small amount of smoothie left in the glass.

This is... does this mean that I should also ask Hiuri about the origin of her name? I know the current situation of Hiuri's parents, so I feel like the origin of her name is a minefield...

“What about Hiuri? Does the name Hiuri have any origin?”

I decided to ask. If this makes Hiuri uncomfortable, I'll apologize.
Since we are in love, it should be okay to ask a few in-depth questions.

“Mine is... isn’t it just the sound? I've never asked my parents. And we didn't have that kind of assignment in elementary school either.”

It wasn't a minefield, but it wasn't particularly interesting either.

Unless you have such an opportunity, you almost never know the origin of your name. Only your parents and godparents know about it, so if you part with them before hearing the origin of your name, you will never have the opportunity to find out.

I do want to know the reason why they gave her the name that doesn’t exist in this world, Hiuri... in hiragana. I certainly think it sounds good, but is that all there is to it?
There are many types of names. I think there's a reason why they didn't choose a kanji name, but the tricky part is that since they are those parents, it might not have any deeper meaning.

“Umm...”
“‘Why don't you try asking them?’ You’re not going to say that, right?.”
“I won’t. There's no guarantee that you'll get a useful answer anyway.”

In fact, there is even a possibility that she might upset her parents.

“Hiuri really doesn't want to talk to your parents, huh.”
“Maybe it's a little different than that. In the first place, I don't have a chance to talk to my parents. I don’t even know when was the last time I saw them.”

Hiuri said as if it was nothing. In fact, it's probably nothing to Hiuri.

From my point of view, as someone watching from the sidelines, I hate seeing such a lonely family. It's very different from my family where we always eat together even though they're busy.
Can you really call them family if you don't even remember when you last met them?

“Kazuki-kun always looks sad when we talk about family, huh.”
“Well, I guess...”
“You don't have to worry about it. I'm just glad you're here to help me relieve some stress.”

Seeing Hiuri's reaction like this makes me want to make her live in my house.
Hiuri's parents aren't coming home anyway, so I think it should be okay...

While I am worrying about it, Hiuri starts talking to change the topic.

“Hmm, I want to eat something other than sweets today.”
“Eh? Umm, what do you want?”
“Pasta. Something like peperoncino, I like those things.”

Hiuri doesn't have many things she doesn't like. But there are a fair amount of things she likes.
I remember a good number of her [likes].

“Then, I'll choose the peperoncino from that pasta shop I found in front of the station...”
“Fufu, thank you. I like the pasta from that shop, you know?”

Apparently, Hiuri knew that I would take out the pasta from this shop.
Somehow, it's a bit frustrating.

Hiuri starts eating the pasta.
Next to her, I am drinking cider.

I still can't do anything about Hiuri's family. In real life, I can't even give any advice unless Hiuri tells me.
What’s more, in order to get Hiuri to talk about it, she has to be in love with me first.

The road ahead is a difficult one.

“I hope Kazuki-kun doesn't worry too much about me. You should just take it easy.”
“...Yeah.”

I could only give her a weak reply.
