I love The Birdcage. It was originally a French play La Cage aux Folles in 1973. It was made into a French film in '78 that played in art houses in the states which is when I first saw it. It was actually really good that it was subtitled because the laughter in the theater was so loud we couldn't hear the dialogue a lot of the time. They did make two sequels in the early '80s. They were fun but not nearly as good as the original. The Broadway musical was in '83. I was lucky enough to see the touring company in '84 when they were in San Francisco. Sorry about the long winded history but it has always been a favorite of mine. Then they made The Birdcage in '96. I thought they did a great job. The casting was wonderful. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane were great. I love the walking like John Wayne scene. Also, I agree with you that the cemetary plot scene is the best. Everyone was great but I do think Hank Azaria stole pretty much every scene he was in. The ending was just like the original film with the wedding. I understand what you are saying about expanding the ending to find out what happened to everyone and what they learned but I think it is fine the way they did it. They were going for the comedy. Also, just the fact that Val and Barbara got married and everyone was there at the wedding shows us that they had to all have learned something from the situation. Thank you so much for reacting to The Birdcage. I watch it at least once a year but it probably has been about a year since I saw it last. It always makes me laugh so hard I cry. I watch To Wong Fu at least once a year, also. I look forward to you reacting to that if it ever wins the sweepstakes.
