[A/N: Polished and posted at a civilized hour--how can this be?! I hope you all enjoy this one.]

******

Haoyu sat backwards in the desk chair, his arms propped on the backrest while he watched Alden take a turtleneck from his closet and fold it. “How do you avoid getting lost?”

Lexi, leaning against the doorframe, groaned. “He tells us he’s going to sleep over at Matadero, and your first question is how he finds the place?”

I need my uniform, too.

Alden reached for the hanger.  “The wizard who’s been healing me is at Matadero. It’s more convenient for him if I’m there.”

Esh-erdi had said it was fine to blame his housing arrangements on Porti-loth. So he would.

“I don’t think I’ll be staying there much longer.” They’d said a few days and it had already been a few. “And I don’t get lost because the System is willing to give me directions if I ask for them.”

“Nice,” said Haoyu, nodding. “Next time one of my parents goes there, I’m going to tell them they’re no big deal. Even sixteen-year-olds can hang out at the cube if they want. What’s it like?”

Alden stuffed a pair of sweatpants into his bag. “It’s pretty normal inside. The parts I’ve seen. I’m just staying in a room. There’s a cafeteria.”

Haoyu smiled. “I shouldn’t have asked. Mom and Dad can’t tell me much more than that either.”

“You’re getting away with so much peculiarity right now just because everything else is insane, too,” Lexi said. “Everyone’s either got their own drama to deal with, or they’re distracted by the fact that a girl in our class warned SkySea about the Submerger boat.”

“Yeah. I need to watch all the news,” said Alden. “I missed hearing about Maricel.”

“How?” Haoyu asked. “It’s been everywhere.”

“I…was visiting my great aunt.”

After a long pause, the two of them spoke at the same time.

“At Matadero?” asked Haoyu.

“Of course you were.”

“On Artona I,” said Alden. “My great aunt was worried about me after what happened and invited me over. It was actually a really good reset.”

Haoyu laughed at the look on Lexi’s face.

“Anyway, that’s where I’ve been and where I’m going. Enough about me. How’s your family, Lexi? Did you get a chance to salvage stuff from your apartment? Is your boat still on the roof?”

******

Halfway between Anesidora and Matadero, ten meters above the crests of the waves, Alden sat in the center of a green flying platform, watching the horizon. The sun was setting. He didn’t want to fly in the dark, so he would have to move on soon. But for now, for these few minutes, there was something about this spot that had made him pause his flight toward the cube.

He thought about how he could point the finger with the driving ring on it in one direction and be back on campus with Haoyu and with Lexi.

Or I can point it west, and be surrounded by wizards.

A foregone conclusion this evening, since he’d already promised Porti-loth he’d come back and submit to a final mud potion treatment. But there was still something about this moment and this place.

Tomorrow was Thanksgiving. It was one of the more lightly acknowledged holidays on the island, even when everyone wasn’t recovering from a disaster. But Alden had gotten an invitation for a feast at the girls’ apartment, so he was looking forward to it.

He was wondering if it would be appropriate for him to bring food. Connie was cooking something for Brodie’s family. Brodie’s family didn’t have an S-rank cooking Rabbit, though. He’d figure it out tomorrow morning.

Friday was duels. Then he had a weekend with no firm plans.

December. Christmas. New Year.

He thought he would see Stuart a few times between now and the end of the year. He would be scheduling Alden’s first meeting with the mind healer. As soon as possible, he’d said, and that probably meant very soon, considering who he was.

The talks with Stuart and with her were good.

Alden felt like he’d regained some of the stability he’d lost on Friday night. Like he’d been given a little patch of solid ground. And if I can have more of that, if a mind healer can help, that will make the next step possible, won’t it?

A way out of the quicksand.

It can be a start.

“Hey, System,” he said. “Call Boe.”

Boe answered in just a few seconds. He was standing with his back to the bathroom mirror, and in the reflection, Alden could see a layer of white foam oozing down the shower wall.

“What’s up?” Boe asked.

“Me. Currently flying over open ocean on the magic nonagon I sent you pictures of. Happy Almost Turkey Day.”

“You too. What was with your last few text messages, though? Did you forget how to write short ones?”

Yeah. I thought he would wonder about that.

“I was away from Earth a little while.” Alden said it in the most casual tone he could manage. “I wanted to keep in touch, but I couldn’t bring myself to pay the messaging fee for anything less than novel-length.”

Boe actually took a step forward. “Why were you off-planet? You can’t be summoned yet, right? Was it something to do with—?”

“I’m fine. It was a social trip to Artona I, not a summoning or anything bad. I went to visit the friend who helps me keep in touch with Kibby.”

“Stuart.”

“You remember.”

Boe’s brows pinched together. “The name of your wizard phone buddy? Yes. Of course I remember. But…you go to his house now?”

“He invited me,” said Alden. “He was worried after everything that happened. And it was honestly great to get away from Anesidora for a while and reset. Distance can give you perspective.”

It took Boe a second to answer. “Well…you can’t get much more distance than that.”

“You’re out of school until Monday, right?” Alden asked.  “How’s your return to life going? And what are you going to do for Thanksgiving? Other than clean the shower.”

“There was enough mildew on the grout that I was worried about it evolving into an intelligent life form.” Boe pushed up his glasses. The frames Dragon Rabbit had chosen looked good. “Jeremy invited me over for lunch tomorrow, but it’s a family time. I’ll probably just—”

“You should go. His parents do postcard-perfect holidays. I bet the turkey has those little paper chef hats on its leg bones and everything.”

“I don’t think—”

“You do think. You’re overthinking. A wise man once said, ‘Don’t overthink. Overdo.’ There will be tons of people at Jeremy’s. One more won’t be an imposition for his family.”

“What wise man said that?”

Alden ignored the question. “If I call you tomorrow and you aren’t enjoying a food coma, I’ll feel sorry for you.”

“I’ll consider it.”

“At least go tell Jeremy Happy Thanksgiving and take a to-go plate.”

Maybe.

Alden nodded. “I really just called to say hi. And show off my ride. And tell you I’m in the process of making plans for the next few months, and those plans include zero sticking my neck out—unless demons start falling from the sky on campus or something—so you have plenty of time to catch up. You’re welcome.”

Boe pointed a squirt bottle at him. “You should be banned from mentioning hypothetical disaster scenarios.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m positive you just doomed an entire campus by saying that.”

Alden gasped in mock outrage.

“What do your plans include, if sticking your neck out is didn’t make the list?”

“I am…going to sort myself out up here better.” He tapped his forehead. “And I’m going to try to calm down and make the right choices.”

Boe looked a little confused. “About what?”

“Everything that comes at me really,” said Alden. “The future. Being an Avowed. My class schedule for next semester. Whether or not to offer up a dish for a friendly Thanksgiving supper.”

“All equally important.” Boe tilted his head. “Alden…was the flood situation worse than you let on?”

Alden considered putting off explaining again, but only for a moment.

“It was. I was with someone who got hurt badly, and I thought I could get us both somewhere safe. But it just got more and more impossible.”

Boe didn’t say anything.

“It wasn’t like before,” said Alden. “Adrenaline was a much larger factor. And I had time to get to know the person a little before the situation spiraled out of control. She helped me out, too. The parts that look too risky or insane now…I wasn’t in a state of mind where I could calmly judge them, then.”

He waited, holding his breath.

“Just one?” Boe finally asked.

“What?”

“Just one more for the list?” His tone was neutral.

“Yes. Only one.”

“That makes ten,” said Boe. “Double digits are more satisfying anyway.”

Alden felt himself relax. “You’re not counting Gudrun the Great Dane or Tiny Snake?”

“Animals go on a separate list.”

“Good to keep it organized.” said Alden

“I do my best.”

******

“Wow…” Alden stared at the thick brown sludge inside the thermos while Porti-loth guided his bare foot into a tub of healing mud. “This looks exactly like the potion we’re using for my body.”

They were in his hospital room, and he was sitting by the table that had held Tiny Snake’s container. According to his messages, Esh-erdi had decided to invite the reptile to live in his room until Alden returned. So that it wouldn’t be lonely.

“It is the same,” said Porti-loth.

“I will be…drinking dirt?”

“Do you need me to explain to you again why a patient should eat the natural foods of his world when his healer tells him to?”

“Nope. I’ll swallow this. Somehow.”

He took a cautious sip. Tastes like I’m drinking someone’s leftover spa treatment.

He wondered how the whole birth dirt potion experience worked, and why it was different from his previous healings. Esh-erdi complained about Porti-loth being too traditional, but Alden doubted the complaints were sincere. After all, if the knight had wanted a different healer around, surely he would have just requested one.

“An Avowed healed me when I was with the Quaternary,” he said. Porti-loth hadn’t started chanting yet, so he figured it was all right to ask a question. “And Rynez-yt in Chicago, Illinois healed me when I was younger. There seem to be a lot of ways to do it.”

“Yes.” Porti-loth let go of Alden’s foot and stood, tucking his lenses into the pocket of his coat with a muddy hand. He drew himself up to his full, and very short, height. “My way is better.”

Alden would have bet argold on him saying that. He watched the wizard rub some extra potion on his own forearms. That was the last step before he would start hooting like an owl.

“Why is it better? If it’s all right to ask.”

“I make your body forget it was hurt. No reversion. Strong starting place for next time you need healing. If someone casts a spell of old wounds on you, none of the ones I treat reappear.”

He cleared his throat and lifted his arms.

There’s a spell of old wounds? thought Alden. Let’s not ever get hit with that one.

He patiently endured the chanting and the sludge. When Porti-loth had finished and departed, he sat digesting his potion and tried not to worry about the fact that his stomach was radiating heat.

I could learn a healing spell, couldn’t I? Eventually.

There wasn’t one in his hand casting book. Maybe after he’d gotten through it.

He wanted to pull his auriad out and practice. Visiting Stuart and watching him cast spells had made him even hungrier for it than usual. But he had about a dozen tasks on his to-do list for tonight, and it was already getting late.

One thing at a time. What’s most important?

It had to be the upcoming meeting with the mind healer. Stuart had asked him what he wanted from such sessions, and Alden had explained a few goals he was certain of. Preventing the kind of panic attack he’d had on the bus, nightmare reduction, getting distance from the bad shit.

He was glad he’d started the conversation right after waking up from the meeting with her. The honesty that felt so natural when he was talking to her had transferred over, and by the time he started feeling embarrassed to be getting into his mental state in detail, Stuart had already mentioned enough personal mind healer experiences of his own that it was like they were talking about an unfortunate shared hobby.

The person he hoped to introduce Alden to was, predictably, such a renowned figure that even wizards had trouble getting in to see her.

Alden still couldn’t quite believe he’d asked for the help.

He was glad that he’d told Stuart he wanted it, because now, if he tried to change his mind, he’d have to apologize for inconveniencing the art’h family and the healer who was clearing her schedule for him.

Yay for committing to things that are good for you in ways that are difficult to escape from after the fact.

And since he knew it was coming up sooner rather than later, he needed to take care of the thing he kept failing at.

When he went to one of the Triplanets again, he would be blending in with clean, appropriate clothing, and he would have more than one outfit to change into.

The Rabbit man is always prepared.

He wondered if Gustavo was on Earth right now.  The intake night counselor usually did his butler work on Artonan weekends.

A text message won’t bother him either way. And he did offer to give me advice.

He sent a quick one, then turned on the television wall, planning to catch up on the news. Before he’d heard the broadcaster speak ten words, Gus was calling him.

<<You’re ready to buy a tuxedo,>> he said in Portuguese.

“Hey, Gus!” Alden was relieved to see the man safe and well. He was sitting in a huge massage chair, and over the top of it, Alden could see the living room of what looked like a very swanky apartment. “I’m glad you’re okay. Actually, I wanted some advice about clothes for trips to the Triplanets. If you don’t mind and you have time to talk.”

He ended up getting not only a talk but also an appointment to go shopping with Gus on Saturday.

“Aren’t you in F-City?” Alden asked. “How will we meet up?”

He didn’t expect to have The Nine-edged Son forever.

“Money,” said Gus.

I guess that works, too.

******

Alden went to sleep that night watching the news and thinking about how just a short while on another world had taken the edge off all the stories.

There were a few intelligent species out there that couldn’t, or wouldn’t think beyond their own local scale. Humans were supposed to be good at it.

When they chose to be.

On the universal scale, all of this is nothing, he thought, watching a recreation of the events that were confirmed to have taken place on the boat that sped underwater toward Matadero on Friday night.

On the global scale it’s a worrying accident.

There had been a lone survivor. A high school girl, a Sway, who had stowed away on the ship. Alden had met her once. No doubt some of his classmates had gone to school with her for years. She had given no interviews and was said to be cooperating with Artonan and Anesidoran authorities.

The statement released by her family begged for privacy and understanding. “Our daughter Mina has no affiliation with Superhumans at Large. She has been struggling with class regret. You all know how confusing the months after selection can be.”

The girl’s uncle had given an interview, laying into Mina’s parents for pressuring her to choose Sway. They were both Sways, and according to him, they insisted on all of their children being part of the community.

On the national scale, it’s a disaster.

Mina was being regarded with suspicion despite officially being held responsible for nothing more than an escape attempt. In contrast, Maricel Alcantara was being hailed as a model citizen—a globie who had overcome an understandable period of homesickness to begin building a bright, Anesidoran future for herself.

Instructor Fragment and Principal Saleh had both praised her for her immediate action. The video of Maricel’s eyes widening and her running away from the obstacle course to go report the runaways had been leaked.

Supposedly.

Alden was sure that if it hadn’t leaked, it would have been shared by the school anyway. The spin they were putting on Maricel wasn’t just positive, it was heroic.

The former Ghosten admired how well she’d adjusted to school and spoke of the difficulty of betraying a friend’s trust for the sake of doing the right thing. Fragment asked everyone to respect Maricel’s privacy and understand that she was devastated her warning hadn’t done any good.

“She’ll be helping me with clean-up for a few weeks,” said Fragment, giving off that easy strength and calm candidness that Alden liked about her. “I hope some hard work will help her take her mind off the terrible way it all played out. It’s us adults who failed, not her. If you see us around your neighborhood be sure to give us a smile and a wave. It’s a tough lesson to learn that you can’t save everyone, and she’s getting it too soon in her career.”

Alden thought it was great that they had her back and were making sure she didn’t get fed to the wolves for something that wasn’t her fault. Probably the hard spin was a necessary part of that. But watching it play out when he knew a little too much about the person they were talking about was strange.

All the inconvenient truths about Maricel were being carefully reframed. And all the convenient ones had been polished and gilded.

The Maricel they were talking about was not the conflicted one who had confessed to Alden outside the mall that she worried she might have ruined her friend’s chances of an escape needlessly. And there was definitely no mention that she had been trying to come up with safer ways for him to escape for at least a couple of weeks before the accident.

One Brute, interviewed in the street while she hauled a roll of wet carpet to a disposal truck, said she hoped SkySea Guard would formally apologize to that sweet Ground Shaper girl.

“She did everything right, treated Anesidora like her home even though she’s only been here three months. And they dropped the ball.”

SkySea was catching hell for having advance warning and failing to find the boat in time.

As for public opinion about the various people on the boat, that was more of a mixed bag.

But the fact that there was a boat with a dangerous magical device on it in the first place had to be someone’s fault. So far, Orpheus Velra and SAL were taking the lion’s share of the blame.

The man who had reportedly turned the boat toward the cube was in his late fifties, though he didn’t look it in pictures. Acquaintances described him as a little peculiar since he’d come back from a long assignment on the Triplanets years ago, but overall, they thought of him as a harmless person.

A few people said that he was scared of the cube. One of his neighbors said he was a kind, shy man and blamed the captain of the boat for manipulating him. “He saw a powerful Avowed who was easy to use, and he thought he’d take him to those SAL lunatics like he was a tool. Will was as strong as any A-rank Object Shaper I’ve ever met, and he’d do just about anything for you if you asked him to lend a hand. Those people murdered him. He’s a victim more than anyone else on that ship.”

That wasn’t a popular take, but, maybe because Alden had a lot of empathy for people who came back from the Triplanets feeling jumpy about demons, hearing it drained what was left of his anger.

As for the others, it was too unclear what they’d thought in the hours leading up to their deaths. Mina’s wizard-confirmed testimony gave them a lot of details about what had happened on the boat, but that was the last domino in the line. And nobody could seem to figure out where and why the first had fallen. Orpheus Velra didn’t remember, and Jacob Moore couldn’t talk.

Here, on the national scale, it’s a disaster, Alden thought. And it’s political tinder in other countries.

American channels were hung up on the fact that Jacob was formerly American, and his father was a Presixter. Basically the flavor of alien-hater who thought deleting the System, severing Earth from the rest of the known universe, and rolling back the timeline to 1959 was the only way to make life “truly human” again. Pretty fringe.

Alden saw that clip of the guy’s mother again. They kept playing it—the one where she failed to hold back tears while pleading with people to believe that her son wasn’t a killer.

He turned the television off.

On the personal scale, he thought, it’s a tragedy.

The distance and angle from which you observed a moment changed the story. Like she’d said, when she showed him the different views of himself on that rooftop, about to be crushed by the wave.

He wondered what the Primary thought of it all, if anyone had even decided to bother him with the news yet.

He wondered what was going through Maricel’s mind. He’d sent her a simple, “Hope you’re all right,” and she’d answered with an equally simple. “I’m okay. Thank you.”

He wondered about Joe and Principal Saleh and Esh-erdi.

He even wondered about the wizard who had decided, for some reason, to make a more powerful, longer lasting Fragile Atmosphere than their people’s Contract with Earth required. That was what the Artonans said had allowed Mina to survive—magical craftsmanship beyond the standard. One of the SAL members on the boat who’d used her own signing bonus hadn’t made it.

What scale was that wizard thinking on? What angle were they looking from?

It could have been anything.

‘I am saving someone’s life. I am showcasing my pride as a craftsman and an Artonan. I am following the path of higher onus.’

Or, maybe, ‘I am thinking about the universe and how fragile all of us are. One day, the Avowed who wears this might be needed.’

******

“Succotash?” Alden stepped out of the elevator onto the floor of the hospital where Porti-loth’s makeshift healing grove could be found. He was going to return the potion thermos to the healer with his thanks. And never speak to anyone of the giant fart that had scared him awake from a peaceful slumber at four AM.

I needed to get up early anyway.

He’d decided that having a special diet tilted him farther into the “bring a side dish” category than not. And he kind of wanted to make it feel like a real holiday.

“It looks like it’s vegan if you leave out the bacon grease,” Connie said. She was on the sofa with a bottled coffee in one hand and her mother’s recipe book in the other. Alden had woken her up and asked her to look through it for him. “Lima beans, corn…”

“Yummy?” Alden asked.

“Looks like it to me.”

“Thanks, Aunt Connie. Send me a picture of it. Happy Thanksgiving, and…good luck with that mac and cheese you’re making.”

The picture came less than a minute later, and he stopped walking down the hall to study it. A handwritten recipe from my grandmother. With a couple of stains on the paper and a note about how simmerblue would be good if you didn’t like sage or thyme.

It looked like an artifact from someone else’s life.

And what the heck is simmerblue?

Alien import probably. They went in and out of fashion.

I won’t be using that, thanks. Earth food only for the next couple of—

A small gasp made him look around.

An Artonan had just opened the door of the last room he’d passed. She was wearing a scratchy-looking knitted knee-length sack, with things that were either nuts or rocks stitched onto it. A Porti-loth creation, if Alden guessed correctly. Her long purple hair had been shaved off, but it had already grown out a couple of inches.

“Zeridee!” he said. “I’m so happy to see you. Finally. Are you all right?”

For a second, he worried this reunion was going to be a repeat of the situation with Ro-den. Zeridee looked alarmed at the sight of him.

But then she threw open the door and bowed low. “Alden Ryeh-bt, I am so sor—“

“Don’t do that!” an angry healer’s voice sounded from the “grove” down the hall. “Stop it! Stop shaking your brain!”

Zeridee righted herself. Slowly. Then she glanced down the hall with a frown.

Assuming there was some kind of monitoring spell allowing Porti-loth to watch the hall, or maybe just mundane tech, Alden held up the thermos. “I brought this back. Thank you for the potion.”

“Keep it!” shouted Porti-loth. “Humans made it in Tennessee. Like you were made. Drink from it often.”

At this rate, I’m going to start wondering if everything that wasn’t made in one specific U.S. state is slightly unhealthy for me.

“You were going somewhere,” Zeridee said to Alden. Her English was as good as he remembered, though he’d spoken so much Artonan to Artonans over the past couple of days that it sounded odd. “I’m sorry to interrupt you on your way.”

Alden waved his new thermos. “I was just returning this and thanking Porti-loth and apologizing to Porti-loth for my bad food choices again—”

“You should apologize!” Porti-loth announced.

“—and hoping I might catch a glimpse of you, actually. They told me you would be all right, but I wanted to see for myself. And…say hello.”

Ask you if you’re mad at me for being so stubborn. Apologize for what you went through. Thank you for saving me in the greenhouse.

She was blinking at him. Her brown eye rings were gone. He wondered if Porti-loth was against artificial implants while he was doing the whole traditional nature healing thing.

“I’m well,” said Zeridee.

“Ha!” Porti-loth shouted.

Zeridee sighed. “Would you like to come in? My room is not the most comfortable place for a meeting, but—”

Alden was already stepping toward the door.

She stood aside and let him enter. The hospital room was similar in layout to his own, but many of the furnishings were made of organic materials. The bed was wood. The table was, too, with a circle of cloudy crystal set into the top that reminded Alden of the class trading table in the consulate.

He stood beside it while Zeridee stood with her back to the door. They didn’t speak for a few moments.

Alden caved to the awkwardness first. “I didn’t have much to say,” he admitted, turning the thermos nervously in his hands. “Just…I’m sorry if me being stubborn about staying with you made everything worse in the end. And thank you. For protecting me from those guys who tried to steal the flyer.”

Looking at her now, he couldn’t quite believe she’d done it.

“I’m the one who should apologize,” said Zeridee. “If I had prioritized your safety over your emotions—”

“No. I think we were right to let me choose those priorities for myself,” Alden said quickly.

Knee-jerk reaction. She had seemed to be on the verge of drugging him and stuffing him into the flyer at one point. “But I am sorry if I got it wrong. I was trying hard to do the right thing, but it went so bad.”

There was another long silence.

“Those men,” Zeridee said.

Are sleeping, thought Alden.

How many times had he heard her voice repeat the phrase?

“Those men should not have been there,” she said.

Alden looked into her eyes. They were focused, serious. Her voice was firm.

“They shouldn’t have been there,” she repeated. “That they were, that they attacked me, that I…that they passed away—none of it was your fault. If they had arrived after you left, I would have tried to reason with them. And they were clearly not reasonable. Or they might have tried to stun me from behind, exactly as they did, and panicked when I didn’t fall, exactly as they did.”

She straightened her shoulders. “If you hadn’t been there, they would have taken their time exploring the residence. They would have run as the floods approached, leaving me behind dead or soon to die. I wouldn’t be here, and even if they made it out…there are those who would insist on identifying them and punishing them. They would have met the same fates by a different road.

“The only person you caused hurt by staying, Alden, was yourself.”

Alden hadn’t thought he needed to hear that, but he must have been wrong. Because something sore inside him eased at the words.

Thank you, Zeridee. You being this way makes me so glad I didn’t let you go.

She frowned at him. “But you must remember that your actions could have led to your death. In the future, I insist you think of how your loss might affect Stu-art’h and Hn’tyon Alis-art’h and—”

Alden burst out laughing.

Zeridee stuttered to a halt.

“I’m sorry!” Alden said, wiping his eyes with the hand that wasn’t holding the thermos. “I’m sorry. I know it’s serious. But you should have seen Stu’s face when I told him you kept trying to force me to stay safe by mentioning his name.”

Zeridee made a yelping sound. “You told—!”

“He was so offended and so pleased at the same time.” The weirdo. “He did tell me to tell you to stop doing it, though.”

Zeridee looked appalled.

“You told him,” she said faintly.

“Of course,” said Alden, still smiling. “We’re friends after all.”

Zeridee leaned back against the door and looked toward the ceiling, letting her head hit it with a thump.

“Don’t shake your brain,” Alden reminded her.

Early chapter?! Yes, please! The ending was wonderful

Aaron A. Cole

SO FAST WOW! Sleyca quick question for you. My understanding of Alden’s secrecy contract with Joe prohibits him for sharing any information he learned in that final lesson (even if someone else later tells him it), but does not stop him from sharing anything he learns *after* the lesson. Did I get that right? If that’s the case, then I understand why he couldn’t share with Stu that he had Knight Skill #112, but why was he prevented from sharing the information that his skill was named “Bearer of All Burdens” that Joe refused to tell him?

Alden, “Let’s be roommates Lexi. I’ll be quiet and there will be no drama.” Lexi, “I was deceived.”

Jeremy Goldberg

woooo! early soup! edit: I live in Tennessee and can confirm that’s exactly how thermoses are made down here. edit 2: I wonder how SAL feels about Maricel, now that they know she betrayed one of their members. edit 3: does the bit about the wizard and the signing bonus mean each avowed bonus is individually hand-crafted by some wizard instead of being auto-generated by the System? That is fascinating for some reason. I wonder if other things given to avowed are created manually? edit 4: I wonder if Esh is taking care of Tiny Snake in the same spirit that he’s taking care of Alden’s birth tree? Did Alden forge some mystical connection with Tiny Snake when he saved him from certain death? Will Tiny Snake one day be in a position to return the favor as a living potion stir-thing?

Sesharan

Yeah. Yeah, Zeridee was worth it.

Vivian Schaefer

Thank you! I love these characters <3

ENTROPY_BOT

Of course, we're friends!

Faiir

Why is it always so short. Amazing chapter, happy so many people care for Alden. Hope Maricel doesn't do anything unwise.

BeyondMeta

Such a good chapter. I was laughing out loud the whole way through. A perfect end to my weekend

William Johnson

Zeridee's poor brain. I'm happier than I thought I would be that Mina lived, no one on the boat deserved what happened to them and I'm glad one survived.

SnuggleCat

Zeridee is going to be so shocked if she ever sees Stu and Alden interacting. "WHAT?! You SWEAR at the PRIMARY'S YOUNGEST?!" Lmao

ewie

porti-loth needs to consider those of us who prefer shaking their brain

Inu

Great chapter as always, could read 10 more right now. :)

Super Super Supportive Supporter

From Ch. 135, Waves I (posted Feb 28) “Earlier when you said Evul-art’h had sent me a gift…that wasn’t from her. I honestly don’t even know her. We’ve only said a few words to each other, and half of them were her musing on whether or not all humans perspire as much as I do. I’m friends with her brother—” “Which brother?” Zeridee demanded. She had both eyes on him, and she’d left the button for the magic garbage disposal pressed. The blue flames were flickering higher. “Stu-art’h,” said Alden. “You might not even know of him. He’s not a—” “You’re friends?” The emphasis she put on ‘friends’ made Alden pause. “I’d say friends, but I guess other people might think it was more like penpals? We talk on his weekends. We both look forward to it. He sent me the gift you forwarded.” My learning cushion. Zeridee finally realized she was incinerating nothing and switched off the flames. She stared down into the sink after they’d faded, then said, “It’s time for us to go to the flyer now.”

Matt

And y'all thought I was delusional for thinking there was a chance that Mina was still alive! Well who's delusional now, HMMM? Lovely chapter. It's so good to see these characters again.

5haun

Thank you for the chapter!

The Human

Tftc! I thought a particularly good one, too

Luke Hudson

Absolutely fantastic writing. You've got my money for the long long haul. I'll be here until the end

Saaski

🥰 I think I really needed this chapter! So nice and cozy.

Clara

IIRC, it was specifically about sharing that info ever, even if he learns it elsewhere later

Josh Brooks

Glad to be back in Earth! Glad to not be stressed for my main man. Glad to see my very favorite characters again (most of them)!

Anime Problem

I honestly can't wait for Alden to no longer be facing daily paranoia like he clearly is. Once he has been healed because I'm just gonna say this Trauma is an actual damage to your brain it is basically an emotional injury and it can be healed over time and overcome. He can start planning and preparing and thinking ahead reasonably and not getting in his own way and preventing him from seeing what he needs to be doing.

puppy0cam

> Zeridee leaned back against the door and looked toward the ceiling, letting her head hit it with a thump.  She is starting to understand that she will be endlessly teased for the incident when she next hears from Stuart.

Heather White

Alden’s reaction to Joe’s rules for that conversation: “That’s way too strict, isn’t it? It means even if I hear the information from someone other than you at some point, I still can’t ever repeat it. Or even act on it in a way that I thought would allow it to become known.” In this case, sharing the name of his skill would fall under the “allowing it to become known” umbrella.

Maddy Weller

I’m so glad Zeridee is alright! Even if she’s mortified about the Stuart thing

Super Super Supportive Supporter

From Ch. 144, Dawn I “—to carry me,” she was saying in a faint voice. “It would be best for you to leave me here. You must think of the peace your life gives to Hn’tyon Alis-art’h. And Hn’tyon Evul-art’h. Of Stu-ar—” “Are you going to < bully > a human child with the names of every living art’h, Zeridee-und’h? At a time like this while you lie bleeding in my arms? Don’t you think that’s too much?”

Poiuy

So much funny in this one! And truth! “How will me meet?” “Money.” It’s not a problem if you can solve it with money!

ToastyFuture

Zeridee!! So great to see her!

Super Super Supportive Supporter

From Ch. 138, Waves IV He let the preservation fall from the assistant for the first time since he’d lifted her. Zeridee didn’t make a sound, but the sudden re-animation of her features turned the illusion of peaceful sleep into something more pained. Her eyes opened. “You’re all right,” Alden said in Artonan, trying to enunciate. “I’m all right. I need to open a door. I think if I use my skill on the door for a second, it might open. Can I have this door?” She stared at him with one eye. The other was pointing straight up. Blood from her head injury was trickling down toward her ear. “Some of the doors in the residence are expensive,” she whispered. “Why do you want them?” Alden swallowed. Stay calm. Act sane. Don’t freak her out. “We’re not in the ambassador’s residence. I’m taking us both to a place that I think is safe. This is another door. You don’t mind me using my skill on it, do you?” “Those men are sleeping.” “I’m glad they are. May I have this door? Or even just the knob?” “Why?” More warm blood was slicking his hands. Shit. I can’t do this to her. One more try. Then we re-preserve her. “If I use my skill on this door, it might open. I hope it leads to a safe place. May I?” “Yes.” Great! “Alden Ryeh-b’t, I’m sorry,” she said. “I shouldn’t have allowed you—”

Box Jellyfish

Troll Alden is best Alden. There should be some sort of mental health index for Alden based on how much he's winding up the people around him.

JennP

A nice long chapter. Excellent.

Saaski

You mean mostly Americans who follow this novel? Not to my experience.

Patrick Johnson

Thank you Sleyca! Great chapter as always

SnuggleCat

For real. He's gonna freak when he finds out how many h'yntons he's friends with.

jg

Yesssss

Cyrus McEnnis

I can't speak for anyone else, but Aotearoan time zone here. Released about 1 PM Monday my time.

Loran

Thank you!

Zachary McNamara

I think trauma-burdened Alden took the convenient out of blaming Joe for his own desires to avoid the subject. There's enough truth there to feel like he was still sharing something to strengthen the friendship without fully going to intensity 99.

JJ Hunter

*clutches the many treasures of this chapter to her chest in inarticulate gratitude*

ppbrro

Yippi!!!!

Kevin Deane

I am not sure if it was intended, but when Alden was talking about the importance of the incident based on the scale, he mentioned "On the national scale, it's a disaster" twice. I think it works like this, but I mention it because it's not the expected pattern. Anyway, thanks for the chapter!

Obran

I don’t like this chapter one bit. I didn’t have to wait up until 5 am to read it. It is unnatural.

Heather White

As usual, this chapter has so many striking, enjoyable moments that it’s hard to pick just one or a few. Here’s one small one… the fact that Esh made off with Tiny Snake. I am charmed by the vision of Esh-erdi checking Tiny Snake’s water bowl and saying good night to him before heading to bed.

Kevin Deane

It's definitely not, spending some time in the Discord makes it apparent.

Polar Sleuth

Poor Zeridee. What is she going to do with Alden now? Can she allow Alden to walk around unprotected? The Primary's son now knows of her (failed) attempt to protect Alden and was pleased, but wants her to stop... Such quandries.

Obran

P.S. just a little song about winning succotash https://youtu.be/etviGf1uWlg?si=XeXG-Bp3jb_7lJlz

Scrigast

Fantastic chapter! Thank you for writing this story, it’s one of the few things that makes me really happy

David Kanevsky

R u ok? Did something happen? Why so early 😂?

Robert Mullins

@Sleyca, it seems like Alden never refers to mother by name in his own head. Did mother put in a safeguard when he last affixed?

Jean

Shaking your brain is bad!

puppy0cam

He also cannot act in a way that would lead to other people learning that information.

Luke Wells

Random thought but can anyone with authority sense tell if Boe is ‘attached’ to them, maybe even interact with him there?

Pinpenny the great lithian

Zeridee's reaction at the end genuinely had burst out in laughter. Love you Sleyca!

Bryan Thew

Ty for the soup.

WILLIAM DU

Straight up a Shakespearian tragedy.

Clint

Thank you for the lovely early soup! “Don’t shake your brain” is such a great line. Feels true and natural and alien at the same time. Zeridee’s forgiveness is a wonderful throwback to when Alden forgave Hannah. Bringing food to Natalie’s Thanksgiving — shaking my head, but I don’t know the right thing. I’d suggest wine, but it’s very illegal on Anesidora. I bet Porti-loth or Zeridee could get him appropriate Artonan drugs that aren’t illegal. I wonder if he could get a real wevvi fruit. She has mentioned wanting to get familiar with Artonan ingredients.

denatured

I think Lexi is a bad influence. His reactions are too rewarding and he's turned Alden into a monster. Now Alden's picking on brain damaged diplomatic assistants. He should feel _shame_.

March Parabola

Thank you for the early chapter. Usually I check for them in the morning but it's fun to do so before bed too.

JustMe

Work soup? Unexpected but appreciated. Thank youuuu

JJ Hunter

Oh. Oh, my heart. Alden talking to Boe had echoes of what Connie said to Alden: they're both working on getting themselves together and everything right now.

Sébastien Kingsbury

Zeridee: "put me back to sleep and never wake me up again"

denatured

But Alden has to eat the natural foods of Earth or he will get buried in birthdirt with only his nose poking out. I assume.

SunStar

Thank you for the chapter. We're gonna need an update on Lexi's boat. Has it in fact escaped the roof?

JJR Killjoy

Alden really out here able to tell the truth because it's so ridiculous people won't believe it anyways. "Oh you went on a trip to Artonan I ? Good one bud"

Jim

Oh that was so wonderful, thank you. I'm smiling at Alden and Zeridee's interaction. "unless demons start falling from the sky on campus or something" Alden! You are inviting disaster! Don't you know you're the MC? Boe was right to reprimand you.

Mason W

I like the story is moving beyond Alden worrying about stuff and getting back to living his life. It needed some momentum- feels like we are getting closure and opening a new chapter not just in story, but in Alden’s focus and life now.

SkySeeker

Eh, all his drama is on another planet, so it definitely doesn't count, right?

Calibri

This chapter was so good! Zeridee! The vantage points! Alden’s musings about the Fragile Atmosphere! The conversation with Boe! And, of course, the fart that scared Alden awake!

David Kanevsky

Am I the only one starting to suspect that's Zerodee might have a little teeny tiny boy next door crush on Stewart?

David McCreight

What is the difference between a Hn’tyon and a Knight?

Robert Mullins

I think it fair to say at this point that either Zeridee never saw, doesn't remember, or doubted it so strongly that she never entertained the possibility it was real, assuming it was a figment of the brain damage. No way she responds normally to Alden if she even suspects.

Shimelton

I love this story so much. And every chapter I love it more.

Jim

Insert meme "They're both the same" Hn'tyon is the Artonan word for Knight of the Mother Planet. It gets loosely translated to General in English by the Contract.

Leaf

Most of the time when Alden lies he lies by omission, I was going to go back and see if he had ever directly lied but now I don’t have to I guess. I had a theory that it was influence from the gremlin, like his veganism.

Robert Mullins

Hn'tyon is the transliteration (look it up) of the Artonan word that the Artona 1 contract translates as knight and earth contract translates as General. Alden uses Hn'tyon because he speaks Artonan and finds both Knight and General lacking as translations, though the former is certainly closer than the latter.

Ricky Brent

The part of 131 where she was panicking, then thought how her father already bought the food for her 16th birthday next week and regretted not appreciating it hit pretty hard... I'm glad she made it too.

Calibri

Also when Zeridee said “the only person you caused hurt by staying, Alden, was yourself,” I think that might have been meant as a reprimand, but Alden took it as absolution because he’s the Bearer of All Burdens 😭

Calibri

Envisioning Esh taking care of Tiny Snake made me laugh with delight 🤣

Travis M

I think this has been answered before, I can't remember where though, it's a really difficult topic to search for in the past chapters. It's because he thinks it's weird to refer to 'her' as Mother. Not sure on the reasoning, either because it's weird on its own, or because his mother died. He's not swayed into secrecy though.

DurzoMandragoran

None. English vs Artonan. Other humans call them generals but Knight is a closer translation to what they do/represent.

glow

Mina is alive! I'm really happy about it ;-;

Llainway

Thanks!!

glow

In moments like this, when a thousand things are going through your mind, it makes sense Alden would still automatically fall back to 'Joe', because that's what he's used to calling him and overwriting that impulse will take some time.

DAK

Succotash? Sufferin’ succotash! Sleyca’s really leaning into the loony wabbit theme here.

Jumping Flounder

i hope they leave it there, and turn it into another rooftop rollercoaster. maybe lexi can use it to make some $$

Fennec

“You do think. You’re overthinking. A wise man once said, ‘Don’t overthink. Overdo.’ There will be tons of people at Jeremy’s. One more won’t be an imposition for his family.” “What wise man said that?” -- The wisest of men. The Jeffiest of Jeffs.

Justin

Glad to see Zeridee! That was a great touch. And I appreciate the timely chapter, made my Sunday night have a great ending.

Jumping Flounder

i think it’s good manners to bring some type of side dish to a dinner. i always do something light that goes well with most other dishes, like a pasta salad.

Bryan Thew

Zeridee looked appalled. “You told him,” she said faintly. “Of course,” said Alden, still smiling. “We’re friends after all.” This has to be like the faux pas of the week. You don't let the handled know that they are being handled, but they were treating him as a knight. So balanced?

Spygeneer

I think he might be actively avoiding the word so as to not accidently use his privilege

Lee

I am glad too. I am also sad thinking about Jacob and his mom. I wished he survived too. Now he will only be villainized by the world instead of a kid who got overwhelmed. Maybe Anesidora will re examine how they do intake. Not allowing minors to be accompanied by family members during their first months or year is really just heartless and unnecessarily traumatic experience.

Snugglebadger

Zeridee cracks me up. Glad Mina made it, her not having supposed to have been on the boat and choosing to stowaway on it on a whim, only for it to end the way it did was heartbreaking. This was a nice chapter.

Tungsten

Looooooved the chapter!!!

Justin

Just wondering how? She was on the exploding boat.

Nayruke

Personally I think knight is also a bad translation Paladin seems to be the closest English term

Lee

Thanks for the chapter. Another great one. I am so looking forward to Stuart finding out his code name is Great Aunt. I am sad to finally get confirmation that Jacob died. Glad Mina survived. Also, good writing to explain how she could survive. Portiloth is hilarious as always. It might be double hilarious if he and Chicago wizard healer meet up to discuss Alden's health plans with that Artonan mind healer. Zeridee dont shake your brain. That's good advice for recovering from a concussion despite hilarious Artonan phrasing.

puppy0cam

the going story is that her fragile atmosphere was higher quality than usual. That's probably bullshit, but it's plausible enough for an explanation to the public.

Luck

They explained in the chapter. She and the brute used their Fragile Atmosphere, and the wizard who made Mina’s made it extra powerful, just because.

H.S. Spudney

Yoooooo early soup is good soup! We feasting on this one :D

Aguy768

He should sell it to the building so they can preserve as a memorial.

Skull Leader

Comment Time~ 1) It is nice to know that Sleyca and me had the same reaction to this witchcraft of early releases. Almost did not believe my alert. 2) I will never tire of watching Lexi's overreactions of hearing about the Life of Alden from the casual mouth of Aiden himself. 3) It is amazing to think that its been less than a month of him being in Hero School since I think Halloween happen when he was still at Onboarding. 4) Its fun watching Aiden try to get Boe to socialize with people. Given how much Boe tried to get Aiden to do so while he was new to the island. They are truly brothers that got each others back. 5) A wise person said that...JEFFY? Wise??? Maybe he did not dump stat his wisdom as much of intelligence but still~ Hilarious! 6) I want to ask Porti-loth how drinking special mud heals the human body, yet I fear the long winded lector he would give in the process. 7) Words can not express how excited I am for the Gus shopping trip. I have wanted to see more Gus since onboarding happen. Please Gus teach our Hero Rabbit how to hero in STYLE. 8) I am happy that Mina is still alive. I really want to see more of her and I am rooting for her becoming a hero. Even if that route feels harder for her given her notoriety. 9) Thanksgiving with the Bunny Girls will be fun. I am sure Lute will be there as well. I fairly certain one does not need to bring food to this event as anything you bring is not going to be eaten in favor of stuff Natalie makes, but I am sure Natalie will love the gestor anyways. 10) Its far more apparent of how young Zeridee is now that Aiden interacts with her when she does not have her job role to fall back on in interactions. Aiden throwing her off balance laughing was cute.

Ducktacular

Such a feel good chapter, so much love for the extended cast. I sure hope no nosy (pun intended) wizard Mortitian notices that one of those dead avowed was blasted in the face by a spell. And I sure hope that no other wizard has a motive to make a big deal out of it to mess with their assistant. And I even more hope that that situation doesn't result in Alden feeling the need to come clean in an effort to exonerate Zeridee. And it would extra suck if Zeridee was the kind of self sacrificing personality that would lie and take the blame for Alden, thereby irrevocably messing with her life goal of changing her class status.

denatured

I like to bring a dessert because pie. But when I host, I like it when someone brings an appetizer to keep everyone distracted while I finish cooking the main meal.

Hugh Peeble

Double shock if Alden doubles down and insists Mother is now his Great Aunt…

Richard Fields

I don't know why I love "Don't shake your brain." so much but I am absolutely going to start using it with certain people in day to day life.

Cyrus McEnnis

It's explained in the chapter, but her Fragile Atmosphere wasn't the "standard" strength, it was a bit less fragile and a bit more atmosphere.

Hugh Peeble

Favorite things from this chapter: - roommates giving each other a hard time like friends always do. - Is Mother now Alden’s Great Aunt? - Esh taking care of the snek - reaching back to his intake mentor for shopping advice. - Boe scorekeeping by categories - Alden connects with Connie for an old family recipe - The healer knows best - Alden finally gets time with a conscious Zeridee, only bummer is he didn’t bring her oranges. Great chapter Sleyca! It was soup for the soul for sure!

sketerpot

As an Aqua Brute, he has the strength and wisdom of the ocean.

Authorii

Does Alden keep a little dirt under his pillow for the dirt man?

The butler did it

"Don't shake your brain"; the perfect segue from an intense arc back into a more light-hearted tone.

Jeremy Goldberg

I couldn’t help but wonder if that was the truth, or if it was non-concussed Zeridee’s version of a loving lie. I hope it was the truth. I also hope Alden invites Zeridee to Thanksgiving!

hmDrake

Oh man, I think he broke Zeridee.

LadyLark

It’s so confusing when it comes to Thanksgiving because the Harvest happens at different times depending upon where you are on Earth. So for example the States have Thanksgiving after Halloween but Canada has Thanksgiving before Halloween.🧐

Alex Scriber

[A/N: Polished and posted at a civilized hour--how can this be?! I hope you all enjoy this one.] Well done!

Ploddingpanda

He's staying in Matadero specifically because he has drama on Earth so Lexi definitely is deceived about the drama part. To be fair, it's currently not widespread knowledge, but I assume it will be known eventually by the general public

dibjuv

If that's true (and not just people lying on the news to cover something up), that's an interesting bit of lore. Does it mean that every Avowed's spells are personally made by some wizard, and not just provided by the System to be the same for everyone? Actually even if it wasn't true, it would still imply Avowed's spells are all different, because how else would this be a plausible excuse? I wonder who made Alden's Bearer spell then, and more importantly, who made his bug killing spell?

Shiyon

Stu is his (fake) Great Aunt! That's what the roommates decided he say instead of "important artonan friend" haha

Terrestrial_Biped

I was just thinking that. There's the most slender possibility that she knows but considers it a private matter, but... the other things you named are more likely. So it looks like we cleared this hurdle. Now there's only Lind left as a possible exposure landmine.

Skull Leader

The Great Aunt bit is a call back to a earlier conversation with Lexi where Lexi pointed out that talking about his "Artorian friend" would be read as anything but its literal meaning by others. So Aiden mentioned that next time he will just use a fake excuse when he talking to Stu such as talking to his "Great Aunt."

Obbu

Lexi is the one who actually suggested that Alden use "elderly aunt" to refer to his conversations with Stuart in ch105. “Say you’re on a phone call with your elderly aunt or something. Let everyone know they need to be polite. You don’t have to be forthcoming about…”

Heather White

Oooh, good memory. I’d completely forgotten that. I was kinda enjoying the image of grandmotherly, hot chocolate fixing Mother being his fictional great aunt.

Alex Scriber

I really liked this chapter. Several good scenes, and I like that Alden was in all of them. So many good lines, going to pull some of my favorites out. “Yay for committing to things that are good for you in ways that are difficult to escape from after the fact.” -Very true ““Aren’t you in F-City?” Alden asked. “How will we meet up?” He didn’t expect to have The Nine-edged Son forever. “Money,” said Gus.” -awesome reminder from Gus about one of the Rabbit superpowers. Money doesn’t buy happiness but it solves a lot of problems. And, of course, that last line.

Scarlett O'Hare

Woo! Thanks for the early chapter!

Desert Yeti

Zeridee and Lexi need to meet. And vent about Alden.

Obran

Maybe Alden will invite Zeridee over to Natalie’s for thanksgiving

Aspiring Moth

Porti-Ioth is hilarious. I hope he doesn't dissappear from the story forever after Alden leaves matadero

VP

It's the best option if you want a clean break. You are given 3 months to close your life in your home country and then 3 to start forming a new one with other people on the same boat. It's not ideal but definitely not evil by design

VP

Great aunt is what Lexi told him to call Stuart

Terrestrial_Biped

Haha. Lexi would be stressed out by Zeridee's concerns, and Zeridee would be confused by Lexi's.

ouroboros

Don't shake your brain! Suffering succotash, the mud potion 4 am fart made me literally laugh out loud. That was funny stuff. Can't wait to see how the mind healing goes. Great Aunt is Artona I? I bet she would find that amusing. I loved that personally.

glow

I've been thinking that it's a good thing Maricel ended up reporting Jacob because she probably would have blamed herself for not saying anything otherwise. Even if it didn't end up preventing the disaster, in the scenario where she doesn't say anything she wouldn't have known that.

glow

Fragile atmosphere is not a spell per se, is it? It's a crafted item, and I don't find it difficult to imagine that some items are higher quality than others, be it from the materials used or the proficiency of the one doing the crafting.

Stylemys

I get the impression that Zeridee was raised like Stuart, with the expectation of being the votary to a particular beloved Knight who died early. Whereas Stuart shifted his purpose into being a Knight himself, Zeridee simply lost her purpose as a Wizard entirely and saw no reason to even practice magic if not for her Knight.

Anthony Lutz

Mina is still alive because of plot armor almost as strong as Aldens, her specific fragile atmosphere saved her while the girl standing next to her that also used one died. Clearly she has some part to play in the future.

David Giles

Magnificent as always

ouroboros

If that were so, wouldn't he be great grandpa? I'm not sure that tracks but I have seen people say as much. I mean that's where he was, but he seemed to get just as much solid ground from A1 as Stu. Just saying.

Nedardo

Knight is the closer definition technically, but general more correctly describes the level of expected respect and deference. A major purpose of the Earth contract seems to be keeping Avowed under control, so it likely leans towards using translations that more effectively steer their behavior to desired outcomes.

Kim Enteiu

Lexi told Alden to tell people he was on the phone with his great aunt instead of a Wizard if he wanted to keep a lower profile, so very clearly said he went to visit his great aunt on Artona I knowing exactly what kind of reaction Lexi would have 😆☺️

Lee

Regarding 6. Maybe it has something to do with Artonan wizardry like my spot also means my place of birth

ouroboros

I forgot that. You're right. Though I'm surprised you remembered that detail.

Lee

So it has become code name for Stuart. I still don't get why Haoyu is Foe Cooker

ouroboros

That's a baller name, I'd rather be called a foe cooker than a Grandma. 😆

Kedar

Surprised the chapter wasn't called "Don't shake your brain!"

BelligerentGnu

Can I just say, Sleyca, that it is goddamn stunning how the emotional overtones of your story stay with me, chapter to chapter? Any other author, and each chapter I'm reintroduced myself to the mood of the story, remembering where we were last chapter. Thoughts like, "Man, these last few chapters have been exactly what was needed to counter balance the incredible stress of the Wave incident" just *wouldn't occur to me*, because why would they? It's been a week, or even just a day since the last chapter, I'm in an entirely different mood. But I pick up your latest and I'm right back there, every time. You're an incredible talent.

Gregory

The thing is, Zeridee is absolutely right that Alden's death would seriously affect Stu. A world with a dead Alden is a world with a way, way shorter life expectancy for Knight Stuart.

Nedardo

Lexi told Alden to pretend he's talking to his elderly aunt if he's actually on a call with a wizard friend. Alden's only lying here in a technical sense.

wakeuptheresbacon

Typo: "Alden Ryeh-bt" -> "Alden Ryeh-b't"

Kim Enteiu

The fact that the S-Rank got a higher quality fragile atmosphere makes a lot of sense to me without it being plot armor; I could see Earth grabbing a higher quality craftsmanship Fragile Atmosphere for an S rank when handing out their signing bonus.

Kim Enteiu

The loophole is, of course, on a miserable day, when he sees endless suffering on the horizon, telling the Primary Everything; which Joe doesn’t know he could literally do any time he thinks about his next affixation.

Skyscraper

This is hilarious, I like to think that he would of he heard the song.

Carl Earl

I still find it adorable that Alden named him Tiny Snake because he has Big and Little Snake as a teacher

Nedardo

@Alex Max may have said it, but the true wisdom is in listening. As the Buddha teaches us: "Should you find a wise critic to point out your faults, follow him as you would a guide to hidden treasure.”

Carl Earl

I don't think they've ever met. She only knows of Stuart by his family reputation. She only knows of his relationship with Alden because Alden mentioned it.

Adamas Shield

Hmmm, I do hope the pain gun from the entry exams. Is a pain gun. which is a Weird thing to think. Because I prefer that over 'open old wounds' gun that was just too weak. We have a limit for the amount of pain we can have/endure at a single moment, but give magical healing I am unsure how the veteran heroes would deal with 'open old wounds gun' if this doctor here is the exception and not the rule.

ImNotHere

always wondered if Zeridee was closer to the art'h that what we see. Her reaction to Alden friendship with Stu was really strong

asyn

I do wonder if she got a better one due to her rank

puppy0cam

I think it's possible that they have never met, but I think from what we know about her, she's not completely uninvolved with the knights. And though she is an adult, she can't be too far off from Stu's age group given how Esh was calling her a girl than a woman which Alden pointed out and Esh clarified. Overall, while it is still unlikely she properly knows Stu, it's not as unlikely as you seem to be getting at @Carl

InLucidReverie

You know, you make a very good point. There's so much stability in the tone between chapters that it's super easy to jump back in each release. I really hadn't thought about it, because it's so smooth

ImNotHere

unfortunately for Lexi, he knows Alden is so ridiculous that it is certainly true

Andrew Spisak

Porti-loth will always be an Artonan version of Dr. Cox in my head.

Bob Ross

Joe told alden his skill was 112 of 300 from a Very Important List, lets compare it to the periodic table of elements. If Alden had been carying around a ball of iron not knowing what it was, and Joe told him "oh thats a ball of number 28", with those privacy restrictions, then Alden wouldnt be able to tell anyone "oh hey, i found out this is iron" even if mother told him later. That's because by sharing that info, hes also sharing that hes in possession of "a ball of number 28", information he is explicitly forbidden from sharing. Iron is the name of number 28. Bearer of all Burdens is the name of 112. He cant share it because doing so would expose the information Joe shared with him that night.

Anthony Lutz

If i recall, that was the wrights self made tool, basically a taser that is methed up on magic. And one of the reasons it hurt so much was more about the gym not dulling it correctly, so Haoyu got hit with full power.

Bob Ross

Lexi: "Alden, we made promises to each other, assurances were made!" Alden:"Ok but hear me out...i was definitely in a different zip code."

Francis

I love Porti-loth. And I think he made Alden drink the potion to fart out all the alien molecules on purpose

YeetimusMaximus

The older i get the more i feel that money actually does buy happiness. Its just that the pursuit of money destroys happiness, along with mental issues.

Francis

Welll... She made a good argument. I doubt those men would've left her alone

Francis

I forgot about the spell! She could actually still know, I mean, she could have been alarmed to see him for various reasons. But she would never betray his trust

Francis

I imagined him using the internet to search what to feed the snake and being meticulous about sourcing the best mice for it

Francis

Jeremy, I think Esh is going to tell Alden he spoke to Liam and told him that they are keeping the snake

ImNotHere

Thanks you for this great chapter and enjoy the rest 🛌 Poor Lexi who is making faces but does not know yet who the great aunt really is. Glad that Alden is giving Boe more details and advice from a wise man. Good analysis on all the levels of the incident. And perfect ending with Zeridee.

Francis

After Esh sees Alden he will send Stu a message saying "Good job. His cracks are a lot more stable now. I assume you succeeded with our little plan with the Mind Healer?"

Francis

Except when you live in Europe. No amount of money can sidestep process and burocracy

Francis

Tiny Snake will one day become... Alden's second auriad!

Francis

Luckily he didn't tell Lexi exactly who this great aunt is.. he would've had a heart attack

Francis

Poor Boe is so jealous of Stu

Francis

Or maybe she has some foundation points which helped her a bit? I wonder..

Guus van der Borg

Yeah, invoking the names of bigwigs runs the risk of them hearing about it. No one to blame but yourself. :)

Francis

I've been trying to figure out how the tragedy was orchestrated if the System knows everyone's thoughts. If someone planned to have the Submerger and Will together and close to Matedero then the System would know right? Unless it wasn't Avowed. The people responsible would know that thr System can read thoughts and must have made sure that the Avowed with them only had very limited info about the mission. I even think they must have just heard about Will hating Matedero and being a bit crazy and then hoping that putting him on that boat would lead to an accident. Because if a Sway was involved, the System would know. They could even have been orchestrating several such scenarios, hoping that one pays off, because there was some luck involved, the outcome wasn't set in stone imo.

Thomas Todd

I don't think Lexi knows that Alden's friend is the son of the Primary, I can't wait for him to find out

maledei

It only knows the thoughts of avowed I think, so non-avowed (state)-actors or malicious wizards could have been involved...

Jan Verner

Given how much reverence she is giving to Knights Im pretty certain that she would absolutely do that to cover Alden without him asking for it.

Trugath

Great end. I was worried it would end on her confronting about him casting a spell. I do hope she raises it at the start of next chapter though. Or at least the chapter makes it clear she knows nothing (so he can feel safe then get rug pulled when other evidence makes it obvious)

Narf

If Alden doesn't get to keep the Son I hope he at least gets some other sort of flying transport. He seems to enjoy being able to fly around, being able to get away from people for a bit which is notably hard on a densely populated island nation. If alien tech is too expensive or hard to get, maybe some eVTOL like a Volocopter or a Jetson One?

A Free Skeleton

Hyped to see Lute and Emilja doing Thanksgiving next time.

ImNotHere

that's because you did not try with enough money. The rules are not the same for people with lots of it

WannaBeATree

I love the fact, that the person who possibly found out, was someone who wants to live a life of their own choosing, even if it is hard. She should sympathise. She might also feel guilty, because while she did not cast spells to save him, he did it for her.

ImNotHere

@sketerpot when you phrase it like that, what jumps to my mind is "Deep with the Deep" meme

Ari Grad

The funniest coincidence here is that I woke up at 4am randomly to find this chapter awaiting my reading.

ImNotHere

Tin foil hat out, it's conspiracy time : What if other people survived the boat (more thinking of Riley, Jacob had zero Fragile Atmosphere) She could : a) be in a Anesidoran dark site to extract info on SAL b) got picked up by SAL before skysea

Francis

Why didn't I think of aliens? Yes, that could also be possible. Other resource worlds which have grudges against the Artonans could even make the latest resource world with a new Contract their target...

John D Jones

He might, but not soon. The main reason he's using the nonagon is because he's currently staying on Matadero, an island separated by a lot of water from his school.

John D Jones

I'm wondering if Natalie is going to somehow make Vurkey (Vegan "Turkey") for Alden. Florida recently outlawed lab-grown meat, so lab grown meat is a thing and should still be a thing in 2040. I wonder if Alden could eat that without the Gremlin objecting. Sleyca, inquiring minds want to know.

Lee

I don't think Will was actually planning to explode the submerger until he heard whispers from Matadero. It could all just be a random coincidence that lead to this tragedy. Remember SAL was waiting to pick up the submerger with 2 S class avowed. Since it was last minute done at the edge of Matadero under the sea where Earth Contact has no domain, the incident couldn't be prevented. It makes me suspicious if this is the result of the gloss bad luck for Velra family.

Aspiring Moth

Alden will be in the kitchen for an extended amount of time when preparing his thanksgiving dish, so we may have another run in with Joe Also, Natalie is definitely going to invite herself along to Alden's shopping trip on Saturday

Adam Andersson

Money doesn't buy happiness, but a lack of it can destroy it. And with wages failing to keep up with both increases in production and with inflation for the past half century, along with the global trend of shifting tax burdens from capital income and high wage earners to low wage earners, lack of money is a pretty common concern nowdays.

Aspiring Moth

I don't think he'll be keeping at, but Alden was talking about messing with mover disk enchantments to fly. in the longer term, there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to fly on top of remote preserved objects in the same way shapers can fly on top of their element also if Alden is messing around with flying enchantments, does that not mean he'll have to update his profile? flying outside is a very public activity and his fake profile doesn't have an explanation

1 - "don't overthink. overdo" is brilliant and hilarious and i looked for it and don't think it's a real life saying. is this another clever Sleyca-ism ? 2 - Gustavo is an incredible example of a character who feels so full and alive with just two sentences (in the last 50+ chapters). what a way to start a phonecall: "You're ready to buy a tuxedo" 3 - there are so many unusually named wild spices that fell out of favor, i stopped and had to check. google does not seem to believe that Simmerblue is an irl spice. don't know if anyone else needed confirmation. 4 - this Aunt Connie moment is the other side of Alden's heartbreak in knowing there's a redemption arc that he will never directly experience. even if it doesn't happen when we needed it, it helps when those we love are well. (also it's good to remind ourselves that, when she got better, she had a whole healthy family (and the social network of that family) to help her. i think it does a disservice to both her and Alden to imagine the cause was just the shock of her loss of Alden. change, most often, is shaped and supported by our environment.) 5 - Porti'loth the grouch is growing in me // did anyone else squee for Zeri'dee? 6- i spent the whole last scene cackling to myself and (hopefully not) waking up my neighbors. Alden is so funny-mean, and poor Zeri'Dee is so very serious and heartfelt. “Of course,” said Alden, still smiling. “We’re friends after all.”

Izzent

What was Jacob's power again? I'm kind of confused as to why he was on the sub to begin with. If it was explained in early chapters I guess I just forgot...

Jean

Typos: What do your plans include, if sticking your neck out is didn’t make the list?” -- remove "is" “Good to keep it organized.” said Alden -- missing period at the end

Listerine

Haoyu has a hobby of using a slow cooker. Therefore, foe cooker

Bbyh

So I have a wild unsupported theory that Zeridee was mentoring Stu to take her place as Sina’s votary.

Jim

Yeah, I am looking forward to that day too.

puppy0cam

He seems attached to Esh-Erdi's group. Probably he's support staff for the knight couple since it seems like having a dedicated body healer on hand at all times during deployments seems common. Alis-Art'h was living with her healer on Thegund, and Porti complained to Esh as soon as he arrived about the lack of a healing grove. In all, it seems that Porti-loth is likely to disappear when Esh-erdi leaves Earth.

Jim

Alden is now a vampire and must sleep on a bed of dirt from his home country.

Terrestrial_Biped

Not just unsupported, contradicted. Esh said that Zeridee has been trying to leave the wizards class since before adulthood, meaning she was never a wizard and therefore never a votary.

Terrestrial_Biped

He was on the sub because he desperately wanted off Anesidora. And also because he was the one that got the Submerger that let them escape.

CaylaCat

it's interesting right? - we know the object shaper came back a little odd, but was friendly and helpful - we know he talked about something like 'why does no one else hear the whispers' (on the submerged boat) - we know that all of it picked up the moment they entered the no-system area around matedoro - we know there's at least some memory loss

Terrestrial_Biped

SAL doesn't have any naval presence, not this close to Anesidora. So hard no on the second. And Riley is, frankly, an idiot kid who knows nothing of value, so I doubt the first. In either case, your idea would have to account for the fact that the System and therefore the Artonans would know about Riley's location and circumstances. If she was left there, it would require that the Artonans be fine with it.

ImNotHere

I agree with your points. This idea came more from a "what if there is no stronger Fragile Atmosphere" more than "there is more to the story" I was stuck between "is the system using more authority with higher rank" (did not remembered Riley rank) and "is Fragile Atmosphere a spell that you could use the hell out of it (Jeffy's style)"

JJ Hunter

I'm just imagining Esh letting Tiny Snake crawl on him and flick its tongue while Esh practices his increasingly snake-like hissing. Somewhere in the background, Lind-otta is trying to decide if this is a better hobby than his last one.

Curtis

Fragile Atmosphere isn't a spell at all. It's a magical device, which is why it's also single-use. Mina got a better one than Riley, but I am now wondering if that was coincidence or does the System give the better Fragile Atmospheres to higher ranking Avowed?

Hallow

Thank you for the chapter!

Thank you for the chapter! I like the scene with Alden hesitating at the halfway point between Anesidora and Matadero, before aknowledging he had made the relevant decisions previously. His current choice is following through or going back on his decisions. It feels like a parallel with all the other stuff going on with his life. Go to the good-vibes-family's party, Boe! Mina is alive! Only her... RIP Riley and Jacob :(

Re: 1 I have a notes page with all the quotes I find meaningful and new vocabulary from the story. I feel like I am 16 again and reading a story for school... but enjoying it so much more than I did then. Re: 3 Thanks! I meant to look that up and add it to my vocabulary list. Re: 4 I agree. Connie having a network that supports this change is vital! And I wonder if Mr Tiger Shorts was aware of how young Alden was when he and Connie left together for the weekend/week? Or if he too made a transition similar to Connie. Re: 6 My favorite scene that had me cackling was where Alden woke himself up with his huge fart... too too funny!

Francis

It must've been a very large coincidence. Not saying it is impossible, but to have that Submerger on the boat with Will and have the captain go close to Matedero seem to me like too much of a coincidence

Francis

Lol, good point. Perhaps if I gave millions of Euros to government officials they could be bribed... But you never know with Germans

JJ Hunter

#1 is Jeffy quoting Max last chapter, so yes, another superb turn of phrase from Sleyca. #4 both aunt Connie and Alden finding their footing again when being welcomed into another family is one of those parallels that makes my heart ache and grow at the same time. The news felt cruel when Alden wasn't sure he had any other family ground to stand on; now that he and Stu are sure of who they are to each other, and are committed to weaving friendship, Alden can hear the offers of love and help and connection Aunt Connie is in a better place to be sincerely offering him, and take her up on helping him figure out what kind of dish he could bring to Friendsgiving himself. #5 - I really want Lute and Porti-loth to meet and discuss arts and crafts now. Yessssssssss, absolutely delighted to see Zeridee again, and with her minds mostly unsloshed too! #6 Zeridee can use some gentle teasing. I hope she and Alden stay in touch.

Adam Davies

My goal before next chapter is to casually use ‘don’t shake your brain’ in context with someone.

@Fabian, or extra alien-aliens like wizard-turned-demons. Influence from across that dimensional door Matadero is guarding...

but equally it means that when Esh-erdi comes back into the story, Porti-Ioth will be a potential side character

she had the ability to cast spells, which was why Alden's testimony that she didn't was so important. she's probably gone through magic middle school

And Alden didn’t stock up on meat petal before coming home?

He needs to give Jupiter some meat petal plants.

And given who Alden is, he’d have to do it right back, consequences be damned.

imreallyeallyhappythat Mina is alive because I want to see more of fast talking adorableness in this story. Maybe she'll join Celena North. Making people not see her is actually a really good super-power.

There have been studies about people coming into sudden wealth. There's a spike in their happiness, but their emotional state returns to whatever it was before when they get used to being rich. The conclusion is that we have our own baseline happiness, and although extreme events can influence it (negatively or positively) we always tend towards that baseline. So for long-term well-being, working on your baseline happiness is best. What influences that: strong personal ties with family and friends, a sense of belonging, a sense of meaning. There are also a bunch of population-level studies that measure happiness on a national level, and it turns out that equality, not wealth, is the strongest predictor of happiness. Countries with large wealth gaps, even very prosperous ones, are unhappier than countries with small wealth gaps and more poverty. So money can temporarily buy happiness, but doesn't affect it long-term, and being rich when everyone else isn't causes misery across the board.

Robert Mullins

Nedardo, you're not wrong but it's more so that in any situation where I knight shows up on earth and interferes it's almost a 100% certainty that it's best for everyone if their instructions are followed so they get a title that reflects that. When there is a chaos outbreak or demon involved you really really don't want people questioning whether to listen to the knight or the ambassador/local government.

Clint

If you want a clean break. But not every Avowed is going to want that. And I suspect the reason the Anesidoran government wants a clean break is pure politics — power and control, based in the events sixty years earlier. Doesn’t make it evil, but it’s definitely not planned in the best interests of the globie Avowed kids either. Kind of like the System.

Clint

I bet the ambassador’s residence is technically Artonan ground.

Pete

Sway survival confirmed 👍 expected but was waiting for it, wonder when Alden meets her

Gremlin

I usually ask to he sure as I dont usually want people to bring random dishes to my meals. Not when I have planed and organised a full menu. Wine is much safer, can be put aside if I isnt a good match. There must be an Anisadoran equivalent.

Good chapter. It's funny, when I read the last few chapters I didn't wonder about Zeridee at all. When I started this chapter I was was wondering how she was doing and when/if Alden was was going to see her again. Then we go it at the end of the chapter. Clearly your timing is impeccable.

JJ Hunter

Thinking about metaphors, and authority, and how one's sense of the metaphorical ground beneath one's feet might have profound implications for the stability of one's spot in the universe. Maybe Artonans are so attentive to emotional management and mind healing as distinct from body healing because they can perceive more directly what a shaken/shaky sense of self is doing to one's capacity for authority. Neat to see Alden's more usual good humor and playfulness rebounding now that some of his acute internal distress has eased and he has a plan forward. It's so much easier to listen to and actually hear what others are (and aren't) saying when there's less internal noise taking priority.

Heather White

Given how twisted up Zeridee is, in that scenario I can imagine her believing the death was somehow her fault.

Heather White

I’m glad Alden asked Porti-loth about her magic. The idea that older, traditional Artonan healing magic is harder to do but has better outcomes (less reversion) than newer Artonan magic is fascinating. Maybe the “better” rejuvenation treatment Lute’s mom was going to get off planet was this kind of old school Artonan healing. That would explain why it isn’t available on Earth. Now I’m wondering if the story of Artonans’ relationship to magic, especially old magic vs. new magic, will have additional significance at some future point in the story or if it’s just great world building.

Wes

Alden will become Stu's votary!

Morgwath

I wonder why Alden didnt mention he met Kabir in the cube. It would be a nice little, not important detail for the boys.

David

Even if everyone believed she had no connection to SAL, which most people won’t, the only way to get onto that vessel is by using her sway powers. So people are either going to view her as a terrorist or a “mind violator.” Her life is basically over… at least through college. Kind of irresponsible for the media to be using the names and likenesses of these children. Nobody is going to hire her after this, and there’s certainly no way she’s getting into a hero program. Remember that Alden was concerned about his hireability after *being attacked*. Something like this is completely disqualifying

Kim Enteiu

I was just thinking about that; Alden is clearly way better at networking by accident than Manon ever was at doing it on purpose. Porti-loth is clearly the kind of Artonan Aulia was hoping to make inroads with. The way you’re applying that same logic of spell quality to Alden’s skill makes a lot of sense. Alden isn’t just protecting something, he’s isolating what something is from the ravages of the world around him. Time, Chaos, and every outside influence is born entirely by his Authority leaving the Self of whatever he is bearing untouched by everything. It’s a more exhaustive magic, but a much more complete protection while it’s in place.

Partha Peddi

So long as Alden has access to the nonagon, he can fly to an isolated spot on the ocean to practice his auriad spells without discovery. I am not sure if this avoids wizard detection or not. Else he has to rent a boom room at the gym or somewhere close to campus.

Unavowed

I absolutely believe that we'll find significance in the future regarding new vs old magic. We saw that Gorgon's people destroyed authority to grant wishes. With chaining, we see that each chain has two equal and opposite sides. Both of these old magics appear to use authority in different ways to keep the universe balanced. I'm certainly open to being wrong on this point, but I'm not sure that we've seen, yet, how modern Artonan magic is maintaining balance in the universe. Isn't it also interesting that the Artonans have an ongoing problem with chaos while they are also using their their modern magic to impose their will (order) on reality ... ?

Partha Peddi

I thought the votary only applies when Alden is on Anesidora. He does not need monitoring for anything outside the island, like Matadero, or enroute.

Fleisch

Also, the system cannot share the thoughts of others. I don’t know if it would be different in a potential dangerous situation but maybe the earth system cannot betray its users, no matter what.

Jim

Maybe he'll be able to go back to the apartment and take over the slow cooker

Jim

For those looking for why Alden is calling Stu his Great Aunt. Here is the quote from Chapter 105 (paraphrased) Lexi - “When you tell people you’re on the phone with your wizard friend, they’re going to think you mean a dozen different things before it ever occurs to them that you might really mean you have a friend who is a wizard. ...” Alden - “You want me not to tell you when I’m on a video call with him?” ... Lexi - “Say you’re on a phone call with your elderly aunt or something. Let everyone know they need to be polite. You don’t have to be forthcoming about…” ... Alden - “Got it. Thank you for explaining. I’ll tell you guys when my friend calls. I’ll tell everyone else he’s my ancient aunt.”

mistermerf

I'm still half-convinced that a half dozen Artonans can feel "wizard flavor" from his authority and are just respecting Alden's privacy. Because it's just not as big a deal as he fears it is. ... Until they find out that his bound skill is one of the 300.

DAK

Alden did offer to work with Mina on interview day if she'd show her his profile (ch 74), and I bet he's the only one at ANY tryout that offered Anything. If she actually comes back to society, she's probably going to see hero school as one of the only ways to redemption. And then, she'll probably have to ask for Alden specifically with the profile request because there will be no other way in (assuming the school takes her at all). He's already in, but with staggered admissions they'd both be first years. Poor Alden. You know he'll cave.

Aspiring Moth

Alden doesn't know about the knights detecting the authority greeting he cast. he has been practicing auriad spells in his room before and has no reason to think he should change now

Aspiring Moth

the force triangle does present some issues, but he's more likely to try and solve them in his room (buying something wrightmade perhaps) than anything else

Anita

But the thing I'm confused about is : why did lind sense the greeting but never his practice sessions? Is it simply a matter of distance ? Like he's s next door wizards will sense it in matadero? Or is it a fundamentally differemt thing? Like the greeting is reaching to someone, but practising is using the authority for a specific purpose, so it technically can't leak ? Alden didn't feel what stu was doing during his spell. He was just interested in the process.

PatienceHoney

@ Unavowed I totally agree. This is something I have wondered about too. Gorgon is very grumpy with wizards and cannot fully explain why. But there have been enough clues regarding balance that make me wonder. For example how is directing Alden towards the Bearer of All Burdens part of a revenge plot against the Artonens? Is his affixation a key element to fixing chaos? Did Gorgon give it to Alden in hopes that the Artonens wouldn't be able to use it as needed? (Since it would ideally be affixed to a wizard.) So many many questions along this line of thinking.

Gregory

If Alden ever gets hit with a spell of old wounds, he will kind of just die. He won't get this broken foot, but he will get the breaks from Thegund, and the heart damage, and also a hole in his torso thanks to Body Drainer.

Aspiring Moth

@WannaBeATree, she also has huge reverence for the knights due to their burden of affixation. if she knows Alden has to go through the same affixations, some of it will apply to him too. Zeridee is the perfect secret wizardry teacher. she has knowledge on magic but not a story breaking amount, and she has a strong incentive to stay quiet while feeling both indebted to Alden and respectful of those in a similar situation

Rob

Not to mention it sounds like his healer in theugund destroyed all the damaged parts of his body, so would they be re-destroyed?

C. Adkins

This was a beautiful chapter. Thank you Sleyca

Aspiring Moth

honestly I doubt Haoyu's parents would survive a submarine crash and magical explosion that caused a nationwide disaster. foundation points are great, but there are limits when you're using fractions of the human average as the unit they're measured in

Francis

No, it was confirmed that it may if consequences could be catastrophic. Esh said that Earth had no warning of the incident, up until a couple of minutes before it happened (when Will suddenly decided to kill the crew and crash the boat)

Robert Mullins

Fun theory: the word paladin doesn't exist in this universe. At some point Stu will introduce Alden to someone as his Pal-Alden and they will miss-hear it as paladin. You know Paladins, the people that gain power from dedicating themselves to certain ideals and/or making oaths/vows. Like Alden is avowed, has magic, and gets stronger when he acts according to the ideal his power represents.

DAK

I'm always wrong on these kinds of things--so this probably seals her fate--but I'm not ready to believe that Riley died in the crash yet. There are reasons to keep Riley alive but hidden as far as the System would be concerned. SAL will be less on guard if she can't be interrogated, and she might even be safer from lynch mobs if she's presumed dead. Systems can't lie without great cost, but they can certainly refuse to tell the whole truth. If all the press was told was: 1) Mina survived 2) Mina had a fragile atmosphere made by a different Artonan. 3) Too bad about everyone else on the boat. Then the world can lie to itself and the System accrues no new debts. Alternately, she could have survived only to die under interrogation later -- same cover story, but even easier.

wakeuptheresbacon

Even if Alden somehow protected himself from spells of old wounds, I assume wizards have lots of other deadly spells. Fortunately it doesn't seem like wizards are prone to randomly killing Rabbits, so it shouldn't matter unless Alden meets a demonified wizard obsessed with the field of old wound restoration.

Shawn

Lovely chapter! I really enjoyed this one. It's nice to see Zeridee up and about again. Grumpy Porti-loth is also a fun addition to the story. "Is your boat still on the roof?" SLEYCA, you're a cruel cruel author skipping over the answer to this!!!

SFGuru

I don't think the System can read people's minds when they are on another planet - so it's technically possible that a Sway could have subtly influenced Will (and the Captain and Orpheus?) when they were off planet and the System might not know (if the suggestions were in character for them). Something like the Gloss might also bypass the System's awareness. The most likely answers (if it wasn't a freak accident) are that a wizard did it, or that some chaos demon caused it.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

I really wonder what sort of wizard would come up with something like a spell of old wounds Like man at that point you’re just flexing on your opponent (painfully), if it takes an S-rank to cast a spell to revert something by several minutes, I imagine you could’ve just blown a hole through your opponent with an authority bullet or something

ImNotHere

About spell of old wound and Alden (or more precisely Rrorro's powers) : When Alden assisted to the healing session of Kibby, Rrorro removed the corrupted patch and [regrew clean flesh in its place]. It sounds more like new cells instead of reverted one. Rrorro is the second most powerfull healer that Sleyca will introduce us to (so probably in that universe too). So, if she used the same kind of skill with Alden, does he also have those "new" cells? And if yes, as it is new cells without reversion and so without "memory" of the wound (Porti-loth method makes the body "forget"), would old wound works on Alden? N.B.: Alden said he was healed by an avowed without giving a name or how the avowed worked. And it was Rrorro first mission with the Quaternary, so Porti-loth might not know it was her who took care of Alden.

Jeff Wells

The greeting is different than just using magic. There probably is some "noise" involved in doing magic, but there are wizards on earth doing magic all the time, if wizards had to deal with a constant stream like that, they'd just learn to tune it out. The greeting is an actual call out with magic. It's like ringing a bell, it's designed so even new wizards who barely have any authority sense can feel it and reply back.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Thinking about spells of old wounds makes me think about wizard vs wizard combat, or about the many different types of demons there are Do all wizards and knights have crazy fast reaction times? In cyberpunk for example, there are devices that let you move and think super quickly for several seconds when activated, which is separate from gear that increases your reaction time. So if two people have the first device, and one of them activated theirs by surprise, they have (just making up numbers) 10 seconds to attack the other guy with impunity if it takes 1 second for the other guy to activate their device I guess you could also just be really tanky Maybe Joe starts each day by casting a 30-hour-long spell that makes his skin very durable

ImNotHere

Also leaning in the way of "new magic is the source of chaos" Old magic (Gorgon's or wordchains) have indeed a balance requirement while "modern" magic let you alter reality wihout "paying". This create inbalance and chaos is a)the consequence of that inbalance or b) the way of the universe to reclaim authority on the reality. Speculation: Gorgon's people was the only other race to have an affinity with authority by themselves. Maybe that when the Artonan came and offered the contract, it showed how to use magic freely instead of through a "priest/shaman" and that lead to the perdition of Gorgon's planet. Even more speculative part: Gorgon's crime might have been to try to fix that by destroying the system made on his planet by Artonans. Wich would kill all avowed on that planet (hence the murdering part) of the system was considered as an full entity and it would have been the target of the assassination attempt

Topher

Narratively, I think Riley is gone. As much as I wish she weren't, becauseI just loved her character in the short time we knew her. It allows Sleyca to keep a limit on how powerful Fragile Atmosphere is, while letting Mina survive. And what would Riley's story have been from here? We already have a survivor from the crash that Alden has met and had a conversation with, why have another?

WannaBeATree

It will likely be easier this time. Her skill usage will very likely be logged untill she turn 21 years, which means Alden can trust, that she won't use any *bad* skills like mind reading on him, if he does not consent.

Jazehiah

There's probably an enchanted ring or three designed to give the wizard time to fight back. Fragile Atmosphere is a good example.

Heather White

Lexi & Haoyu don’t know who the wizard in question is, right? They know Alden has a wizard friend (already enough to blow their minds), but not that he’s the son of the Triplanets’ most powerful, important Artonan knight? (Poor Lexi may spontaneously combust when he finds out.)

Enkelados

My theory is the Artonans genocided Gorgons people Because their kind of magic is conductive to Chaos creation.

DAK

So, Alden is just hanging out in the Cube with a recipe for interesting Earth food, planning on going to a << short, light-hearted party >> with various Earth kids who will have lots of fascinating and diverse Earth food. I'm pretty sure most knights leave that alone to maintain and respect all the important social stratifications. I'm...not sure that Esh-erdi is one of those knights.

Heather White

Mina’s uncle’s accusation that Mina’s parents pushed her to be a Sway points to an interesting possible subculture. Sways seem to be a (sometimes) powerful, oppressed people. As we saw when Mina was trying to get into hero school, it’s not just the wider world that doesn’t trust them but Anesidorans too. During Alden’s time in Intake they were described as largely being kept apart from Anesidorans in general, partly by being given their own living quarters, partly by how they kept to themselves, not socializing much outside of their group. It’s fairly common for oppressed peoples to develop a culture where they embrace their differences from others and even come to see those differences as marks of superiority. It can be an important survival strategy when people feel beset on all sides. If Sways (or a subset of Sways) have developed that kind of subculture, I can see the uncle’s claim being true. That makes me feel really bad for Mina. Her parents may have valued her fitting in with them and their Sway community more than her freedom to participate in the larger world. Even worse, they may have selfishly needed her to choose being a Sway as part of validating their pride in their Sway identities. But it has left her as an outsider in regards to the rest of Anesidoran society and the larger world. I also wonder if she chose the skill she tried to hide (influencing others) because her parents pressured her to take something so powerful. In essence, did they (purposefully or not) sabotage her attempts to be a “new Sway”, the kind who would be more accepted? They might even look down on those who choose “lesser” powers trying to fit in.

ClownWhosFeelnDown

Most likely Rrorro was doing 'normal' healing, and it was just easier to grow back flesh than to erase the corruption (if that is even possible). So the 'memory' of the wound is still there, but instead of corruption, the body just remembers getting a chunk of skin cut off. Given how complex and ritualistic Porti-loth's healing seems, I doubt they'd be able to just package it up into a skill and have it work whenever and wherever. It almost seems more like alchemy, with all the different ingredients and related meanings.

Joel Wells

So, I've been thinking about Will and how he seemed to go crazy out of nowhere. Also, we've learned in a previous chapter that years ago, the Primary and a bunch of other knights had to hunt down a monstrous mind demon. Then in this chapter, it's mentioned that Will was summoned years ago, and has never been quite been the same since then. Perhaps he encountered the mind demon and it implanted a suggestion within him. We know this mind demon was powerful enough to have the Primary himself and a task force to hunt him. It was also powerful enough to convince a Knight who's power was also in the mental domain that everything she was seeing was somehow the work of the mind demon. Thoughts?

Heather White

I agree that Will’s mental issues may have been caused by some interaction with chaos/demons during a summons. Stu’s mom’s story sheds light on how that can happen to people. The two stories being told so close together is suggestive. I don’t think it’s necessarily the same demon. Given how serious the event was, I have a hard time imagining the Artonans taking human Avowed there. I think Stu’s mom’s story just introduced the idea that exposure to chaos and demons can have serious long term effects on people’s minds and that the Artonans may not realize the damage has been done until it’s too late. Whatever demon/chaos Will may have been exposed to, it’s a good explanation for Will talking about hearing the scratching.

Sam

The mind demon is too long ago. It was just before stu-arth was born. I've been going with the theory that hazel gave him a chain without telling him and it snapped back at a bad time. The system didn't notice because she can apply chains without system assistance and she's off planet when it checks avowed for reasons. Chainers are super rare so it seems reasonable to me that it would be an oversight.

Anthony Lutz

Alden was detected by Lind because technically he did a authority greeting at her. Instead of doing his regular fistbump/wizard pat to Kibby sitting directly infront of him, he sent out a 360° pulse of greeting out into the universe for anyone who was listening to hear. Regular wizard spells are likely "undetectable" because their effect scope is set between Alden and the target of the spell. He is potentially being watched anywhere in public so probably would not start casting needlessly

Jim

@Heather I think you are correct. They haven't gotten past a Wizard Friend, to who the wizard is and what his relationship in context to other wizards may be. To them, as yet, all wizards are things nebulous and far off, or things their Parents have to deal with and interact with, not them.

ImNotHere

Was rereading and a connection popped in my mind: Everybody on Anesidora would like a tree house. Alden is living the dream when in the forest on Artona I

Smaug

Sounds a lot like the hereditarily deaf people community. They also sometimes don't let their children get the new treatments and have a sense of superiority.

Heather White

Honestly, I wouldn’t want to point a finger at any specific real life community. It’s enough to say it’s an acknowledged, common, unsurprising human impulse/practice.

Smaug

Huh, so a "well crafted" fragile atmosphere (as a side note it is interesting that the signing bonus is something that some wizard has to somewhat manually craft) is able to withstand a pretty ridiculous amount of abuse: being blown up by a large bomb, hitting a wall at an absurd speed, being decompressed at the bottom of the ocean, being blasted by the repelling magic and being impacted by sinker-sender particles strong enough to smush entire districts all at the same time and still able to protect the person. That's a really strong magical shield.

Smaug

Just seemed like the closest example to me, what with deciding something big that the child can not later change because the child would be ostracized from the community otherwise.

Ioannis Panagiotidis

Why would Paladin not exist ? paladin (n.) 1590s, in reference to the medieval romance cycle, "one of the twelve knightly champions in attendance on Charlemagne and accompanying him to war," from French paladin "a warrior"

Robert Mullins

Because it would be fun if it didn't and such small changes to a world for the sake of the rule of cool are completely fine to me.

SkySeeker

@Matt DiMeo, "...but Porti-loth, isn't traditional Earth-music vital to my healing process? I need to be in tune with the sounds of my culture!"

SkySeeker

So far we have Odin, Cottontail, Foe Cooker, and Great Aunt, as far as I recall. Did Lexi ever get a code name?

jg

Gorgons unspooling stare of paralysis

SkySeeker

@Skyscraper, your username confused me very badly for a moment. Maybe I should get a proper profile picture at some point...

It's so funny the a Wizard Friend!!!???!!! Vs Stu Friend!!!???!!! Same same faces of urrghummmmhrgh

jg

JustMe

So, that does not make sense from many perspectives. 1. Alden is already walking the path of highest onus, I do not believe that Artonan culture would allow him to be delegated to a less prestigious role. 2. As someone affixing their authority sense, Alden will be unable to use his authority just like a knight. That would make him rather useless as wizard meant to support a Knight. 3. Alden will not be able to cast the variety of spells probably required to be a good votary. There are vocal chants and dual mind spells he will (as to the best of our knowledge) never be able to cast as a human. 4. Another reasons for votaries is also that they dedicate their lives to become great wizards. Alden spends half of his time getting better at his skill (just like most knight probably also do). Sure, many knight are good wizards but they just cannot spend the same amount of time on becoming better, since they all have skills. I think it's more likely that Alden will become a supportive knight, if his secret gets discovered. There have been other species that took up the mantle in the past iirc.

SkySeeker

@Francis, off topic, but I was going back through the comments just now and I saw a few you made earlier that inspired me to ask this. Sind Sie Deutsch? Ich will lernen, aber ich kann nicht oft sprechen, denn ich kenne keine Deutsche. (Sorry if my grammar is atrocious.)

John D Jones

@ DAK Consider that Mina's main skill is apparently emphasizing (and de-emphasizing) sensory input. She could potentially help a Knight (and/or Alden) be less aware of the existential agony of Affixation for a while. Figure "being employable" won't be a huge concern for Mina at that point.

jg

Esh-enacted plans ... I think Esh is old old old now new broken new happy With a new pet rabbit and snake!

Topher

I would be elated with a reveal that Riley had actually survived. But I don't expect it

Lee

Maybe that would explain expenses of Contracts. They have to pay wizards for signing bonus.

Lee

A bit similar to those anti vaccine parents. Except their decision affects other people's children.

Lee

That's why we got his birth tree guys. So he is reverted to pristine health

Lee

I think practicing spells is different from doing Wizard high fives or pats.

Lee

So fragile atmosphere is like a dumb strip down version of bearer of burden?

Lee

Good point. Remember Contract wants to preserve combat readiness. So maybe rank will also affect Fragile Atmosphere quality you get as signing bonus.

NonuvfOorbiz

I guess they are going to discuss the elephant in the room in the next chapter. Namely the fact that Alden has an auriad and can do magic.

NonuvfOorbiz

I'm confused. Did the boy survive or not? They said only Mina survived but then said the boy cannot talk. Does that mean he is in a coma or something?

DAK

@Topher—good points; you can see where Mina has a potential place in the story, but Riley would be just taking up space from a plot standpoint. A reveal of her alive would feel odd. There’s a lot unknown about Systems and their mechanics, and I have bad vibes about Artonans and their relationship with chaos as a whole —but that doesn’t mean that everything adjacent to them has to he a conspiracy!

puppy0cam

It's highly probable that she either didn't see him cast the auriad spell or believes that she was out of her mind from brain damage and doesn't believe what she sees.

denatured

In case this doesn't actually happen in canon, here is a pen, friend. And a pad of paper. And a readership (me).

denatured

Patience, Bearer is not a skill for knights. It was a skill designed for avowed when Artonans were not convinced knights could defend against chaos on their own. It's kept around by the descendants of the original faction that designed it. It's a support skill for Avowed. Exactly what Alden asked for. Gorgon hates Artonans, so his motive for giving Alden exactly what he wanted, that also supports Artonen interests, is in my mind very mysterious. Maybe he just liked Alden enough to give him a gift without it also serving his revenge. Or maybe Alden being his successor is instrumental in his revenge. Or maybe making Alden his successor was just the only freedom he could find, and the option was valuable for its rarity regardless of any outcome. Aliens. Who knows (aside from Sleyca).

John D Jones

@ DAK I think it's more that Esh-erdi isn't the kind of rude asshole who would push himself into a party with Alden and his friends.

denatured

But he is the kind of asshole who will scootch over to give you puppydog eyes and lots of hints until you feel you have no choice but to invite him yourself.

Heather White

Smaug - I think that’s probably a good example. Lee, I think that’s a different thing. Anti-vaxxers aren’t acting based on being people whose very identities make them an oppressed/ostracized group. They’re acting based on on certain negative views about medicine and science.

denatured

It's just... my favourite dialogue is when Alden aggressively pretends the social situation is normal while everyone else has an aneurysm. Can we agree that Esh-erdi at Thanksgiving would be perfect for this? Imagine what he could say to Lexi after. And Zeridee. Apparently she is target no. 2.

Matt DiMeo

Casting a spell is controlled. It’s like singing a song to yourself. His authority greeting was a “hey! Here I am!”

Ploddingpanda

I don't think Hazel ever met Will? At least in story. She only knew Jacob, C-rank Wright, who's not the one who went crazy.

Ploddingpanda

Also wizards have two consciousnesses, so they could have one running on best ways to attack and the other on reacting and defending against their opponent.

DAK

@denatured, yes, it’s this. While Alden is definitely trying to be the politest person in the world, he is still the snarky 16 year old best friend of the most cynical person on Earth. He seems like he’s always here for the harmless troll, and if a knight happens to even vaguely hint about how interesting it would be to eat many disparate alien dishes, I feel like Alden is absolutely going to feed that craziness. Plus, it would be a reference for Natalie that she would likely never get again, and it would be easy to get caught up in that favor to a friend while ignoring the total potential awkwardness of the dinner itself. It WOULD be an asshole ask given the power differential Esh has, and it would probably make Lind a little…well, I don’t know, she knows what he’s like… But I still like to imagine this happening.

Kim Enteiu

Alden got back from his vacation, had to deal with his doctor, and was just in a funny-mean mood for the entire day 😆 absolutely savage and I’m loving it. It’s his call with Stuart while engaging with the unexpected all over again.

Lee

“When you choose points for your signing bonus, you are given an equivalent soul enchantment. It’s a fairly expensive gift. All of the signing bonuses are. The only flaw you might have reason to complain about is the fact that two of the ones offered to you were not quite as foolproof as was implied by their descriptions.” Alden frowned. “The Wardrobe Change spell would have been fully System powered and run. That means it would never have been exhausted like a true spell impression, but it wouldn’t be available to you in locations without a System. As for the bonus you chose, the enchantment equivalent to one and a half points in Speed and one and a half in Agility gradually broke down while you were on Moon Thegund. The remnants were scoured from you, and it was replaced during your most recent affixation with a similarly effective but more powerful enchantment that is suitable for higher amounts of chaos exposure.” It paused. “Make of that what you will.”

WannaBeATree

Do successfull Rabbits, who don't speak the same Earth language talk between themself in Artonan? I just wondered. Gus does not speak English, Alden does not speak Portuguese. Or is it deliberate? A social dynamic to disconnect from work?

SnuggleCat

I see a future where Alden has become Esh-erdi's student and they go around trolling everyone. Imagine the chaos they could cause together.

WannaBeATree

I don't think one can ever ignore the identity entirely. As an easy example, If I were to criticise some hartcore sportsfan's favourite team, i might get yelled at or be hit. That person will act as if I attacked the them directly. Not have a logical argument about the topic. At some point being a fan is part of their character/personality and then having that part "attacked" is the same as being attacked themself. Your behaviour is bad = You are bad. even though those are not the same. How will anti-vaxxers react, when you criticise, not them, but that belief? That goes for so many groups though, those considered "good" and those considered "bad".

WannaBeATree

At the very least, I could see Alden in the cafeteria making more than he needs, so he can leave a dish for the wizzards to enjoy. He has not met Lind, so having her meet him then, might be random enough to be realistic, if she does not have Esh's aversion to wizzards.

Jeff Petkau

I think it's rather that every time an avowed chooses Fragile Atmosphere, it must be cast for them specifically by a wizard rather than done by the system. Mina got lucky with an unusually conciencous wizard.

WannaBeATree

@Gregory I think this will 100% happen at some point. This is too much of an exploitable weakness for a future knight. And I suspect the only way to get rid of the old wounds is to have them reapear and fix them the "best" way. Poor Alden. We might see the live services of a Mourner then.

Nedardo

Probably a lot of rabbits don't speak much Artonan. Having an always-on translator takes the pressure away, and most jobs they do are pretty limited in scope.

Jeff Petkau

OMG I love this chapter. Quoting Jeffy's wisdom, random healer lore drops, the ending with Zeridee, just everything. [Edit: I think because it resolves a ton of dangling plot threads. What does Alden tell his roommates? Boe? Did anyone survive on Jacob's boat? What's the public story going to be? Zeridee! Etc.]

WannaBeATree

Yep, I see authority as tied to personality. Big changes in your behaviour against your will, probably massively affect casting. Alden has a stronger urge to cast spells after his reset on Artona I. Knights are ecouraged to find a new hobby after affixing, as if focusing on growing your personality helps with the "loss" of their old authority.

Anthony Lutz

Every avowed as system generated subtitles wherever they go. Emilija the rabbit speaks Lithuanian and its not been a problem until the contract stopped helping during the disaster.

Catherine

I hope that if the Nilama building survives they leave Lexi’s boat on the roof as a sort of memorial and perhaps turn it into a bar. Or maybe a city viewing point

Terrestrial_Biped

We actually can't rule out Iella's Nemesis being the demon that damaged Will based on timing. Stu was born 20-24 years ago, which is not too long ago for a man now in his late fifties to have been fighting demons.

DAK

@WBAT. I love this question… I’d think it’s probably like those many chunks of the world where everyone speaks 2-6 languages with varying fluency and if you don’t have a clean match, you frequently end up with a French or English hybrid with the closest local match. Artonan would make sense for two travelled rabbits, but it might also be seen as pretentious in public given that most Avowed aren’t summoned much or at all. The subtitles add such a fun dynamic to this world as well—it takes a little extra work to read, so it’s not quite as convenient as a Star Trek universal translator, but does take a lot of pressure off. Separately, I bet Gus does speak English, but isn’t going to bother with it unless you try to speak mangled Portuguese with him first—sort of like Dragon Rabbit and Spanish…

WannaBeATree

Wow, i forgot that Dragon Rabbit did that. That makes sense. Maybe the mandatory brainwash class wants people to keep speaking their native language, to not drift too far from the rest of earth...

JJ Hunter

I keep coming back to Alden's casually affectionate internal 'weirdo' re: Stu near the end of the chapter and having feels about it - it feels like how he'd refer to Boe being a weirdo? Like, yes, noticing the divergence from most people's reactions, but also: that's *my* weirdo, and he can be weird if he wants to be. There's so much Artonan context bound up in Stu's reaction and Zeridee's mortification and I feel like Alden may only be catching part of it? but also, Stu being so pleased every time Alden tells someone else they're friends and the other people believe him and react accordingly will never get old for me. Stu: *probably increments his running 'Alden called me his friend!!' counter +1 and re-ranks his list for which time is his favorite*

Aspiring Moth

Neha (the S rank rabbit counsellor from intake) knows about the knights. Older people who have more links with the triplanets are likely to know

John D Jones

Right now we have some serious suspense for next chapter and Thanksgiving. Will Alden be able to prepare the modified-to-be-vegan recipe or will his succotash suffer? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkhPuH8G5Hg&ab_channel=NikolaJovanovic

DAK

@JDJ. Agree—It has felt odd to me that make-you-forget-you-have-arms guy is so easily accepted in the program when that skill is clearly messing with people’s brains. But if he was accepted, Mina’s skill should be seen as no worse. And on the employment side, sure, she may or may not find a job on earth with her history, but the Artonans clearly have a more open acceptance of this kind of skill.

Aguy768

I think the most probable answer will be a type of Authority wrestling. I think Wizards can likely deflect or crush most spells that target their SELF directly with their Authority, Assuming relatively equal power levels. Basically, just slapping away anyone else's Authority trying to tag you. An Avowed lacking that protection (if I am right) would look fairly defenseless to Wizards.

J Reynolds

We've already seen a bit of this. Jeffy and Marsha (S-ranks) were crazy-fast in their duels with Alden. Having more points to play with upgrades not just your dexterity, but your reflexes.

ImNotHere

Will he master the slow cooker before Haoyu? Will he use Porthi-loth potion for seasoning? Those questions and a lot more will be answered in our next episode of : Cooking with Rabbit

Stonedwarf Stonedwarfson

So Will became peculiar after a long assignment to the triplanets, huh. If that was reasonably recent, that could be a clue for when he was programmed to attack the cube.

Matt DiMeo

Cooking something for Natalie thanksgiving is folly. He should just pop a dozen ice cream cones in his pocket for dessert.

Terrestrial_Biped

The news said it was "years ago". Make of that what you will. I note that if he was indeed programmed, it wasn't necessarily the same incident as made him odd. An already odd person is probably a better target for manipulation since any strange behavior will get chalked up to their eccentricities.

Jazehiah

I'm pretty sure The System knows exactly who lived and who died. The only way it wouldn't is if a person was teleported off world while in a place it had withdrawn from. For instance, using the Matadero teleport center during the demon fight.

Ducktacular

I assumed they meant that no currently active group is being referred to as paladin, the title is up for grabs.

Partha Peddi

Since things are popping out of left field (Maricel's immediate reporting that Jacob is trying to flee, Grandwitch's confession, SAL operative involvement, etc.), it is obvious that the Ambassador's residence issue with killed Avoved will take center stage quickly in the story. It does not help that Zeridee is awake already. She might want to get on the record with her statement. How will Esh save Alden's reputation, as that will be targeted next? He can not perpetually delay the Ambassador.

Aspiring Moth

I have a feeling that awarding Alden a commendation on stage is how Esh-erdi will scare off the ambassador. in the scene where Alden explains why he tried so hard to save Zeridee, Esh-erdi responded "I understand. I would like to-" before he got interrupted by Alden's panicking over the state of anesidora. I and a few others back in that chapter thought he was going to give Alden a commendation there

John D Jones

@ Partha Peddi Save Alden's reputation from what? There doesn't seem to be a way to attack Alden from the Artonan side without incurring some enormous and terrifying blow-back from the -art'hs.

David Burchfield

I don't think it is a coincidence that Alden just learned about Stu's mom, and the situation with the mind manipulating demon. Also while everyone seems to think she is dead (and her hold on Stu seems to have faded and broken over time) I don't think we have absolute confirmation yet, the only there was the Primary, and Stu already mentioned that he wasn't able to use his skill normally, I think there is definitely a chance that he either spared the Mother because he couldn't bear to skill her or she tricked him with her skill to make him think he did while surviving greviously wounded. With Mina alive and the return to the mystery about the attack it will be interesting to see if his new knowledge just gives him a bit more perspective on things or something more. Also note that Tuyet was a mess in the last chapter, she is still dealing with private drama about her brother.

Noc

@denatured It makes a lot of sense to me, that Gorgon would suggest BoAB to Alden. Gorgon's culture put very heavy emphasis on sacrifice and balance. BoAB is one of the only skills I've seen that demands a sacrifice from the caster. He must bear all injuries that he blocks. If Gorgon's disagreement with the Artonans has something to do with how they use Avowed to avoid the proper sacrifice, than this could be the only skill that he finds acceptable.

Kahandran

Ah, yes... Riley "Every Avowed should be treated like we’re saving human lives just by breathing. Because we are" Lin. Not too broken up over her, but Jacob was sad.

Sam Person

off topic... when Alden becomes a knight i want a Kibby pov where she gets the same silver sigil Alden gets from Hannah.

jg

So soon

Aspiring Moth

She has system access anyway as an artonan so wouldn't need a special app. A lot of wizards have eye implants to allow them to use it more like an avowed, but even without them she can use it on a tablet like the students at leafsong

Aspiring Moth

Sleyca called Rrorro almost the most powerful healer she planned to have in the story. is Porti-Ioth the most powerful? or maybe given Alden talks about learning a healing spell in the future, is the far future version of him the most powerful healer? I doubt there's a Knight healing skill because it wouldn't even be a close contest with Rrorro, and she did say that Rrorro was almost the most powerful

JJ Hunter

I am so curious what's going to happen with members of the Boater now that Manon is indefinitely "away" / out of reach (actually dead) and Aulia and presumably Jessica's attention is so thoroughly, publicly diverted to other matters. Will one or more of them reconsider staying with the group? Will any of them seek out a healer of mind? Public opinion being this fervently anti-Velra seems like the kind of scenario where one of the "unpacified" Boater members might take that extensive hardcopy write up of the whole messed up situation and either attempt to blackmail Aulia with it or go to the authorities (or the press!) with it as evidence. The longer the members of the Boater are out of Manon's control, the more likely they are to spin out of Velra family control as well, and there are a couple of explosive secrets involved that starting that chain of revelations somewhere a better informed person like the Informant can connect dots might set off some secondary avalanches...

JJ Hunter

Other thought of the morning: wondering if Parethat-uur will have heard about the flyer fiasco and the incident at Bash-nor's house. He knows Alden is Lute's student. Will he say anything to Lute? I could imagine Parethat-uur asking Lute to pass on well-wishes for Alden's recovery after such a traumatic experience - to think those criminal Avowed would *dare* attack a heart of such luminous purity and steal his flyer! Those scoundrels deserved the deaths they received! You must tell him our minds were much relieved to hear of his survival, and admire his daring rescue of the courageous Zeridee-und'h! Hn'tyon Esh-erdi, the renowned storyteller, is spreading the tale of their heroism far and wide, and my cousin is already working on setting it to verse, etc. etc. Meanwhile, Lute, open-mouthed: *Alden, what the hell, man. 'Some trouble' boarding the flyer was /such/ a euphemism. Your luck is SO BAD.*

Anthony Lutz

As long as Parethat-uur hasnt forgotton to use << proper discretion >> with lute, he wont say anything... although he might overly enquire as the Aldens health and wellbeing prompting Lute to question everything Alden has said.

ppbrro

I dont know how disaster prevention work in this world but i do wonder if they are reported missing, or as confirmed casualties Or maybe they are trully handleing hush hush? Do they have families or friends who will report them missing?

Marlkaz

Porti-loth thinks Porti-loth's methods are better, and they do seem to have advantages, but Rrorro healed Alden beyond undoing damage and made a lot of improvements, even working at a cellular level. Her methods also require less recovery time. It's hard to think of how to make a healing skill scale infinitely in the way other knight skills do. Maybe some knights have taken healing skills but most of their training time probably goes toward other matters so a specialist like Rrorro or Porti-loth will still do better.

Jazehiah

I imagine a Knight's skill that focuses on healing is possible. You could have aspects that cover different types of healing, species, the speed, number of patients... The skill doesn't even need to be limited to healing or defined by its ability to heal. Healing could be a secondary effect in the same way Stuart's wormhole can be used as a weapon, despite it not being the intended use.

ImNotHere

After looking for Tennessee made thermos, I only found Stanley thermos made by Aladdin Industries. The production started in 1965 and the company was moved in 2002 to Seattle after being bought. So no hyped Stanley Quencher (made in China) but a robust vintage one

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

I'm glad you did this research because I was going to quip that Alden's new thermos trend was cooler than Stanley, and now I learn that in this alternate timeline they're one and the same!

Aspiring Moth

@Jazehiah maybe a time control effect, like what Kon wishes his skill set would be (but likely isn't). if it would allow for reversal of time on a life element target, it could heal while having enough utility and expandability to fit in with the other knight skills

Stonedwarf Stonedwarfson

I know, not exactly a smoking gun clue is it. Could still be an important clue though we just need more clue to put it into context. I see four main theories for the sinker incident. 1) Will just had a random mental break down at exactly the wrong time and place, everything else was a coincidence... yeah right, not feeling this one. 2)Someone, probably human, on earth has found a way to hide their thoughts from Earths System and manipulated the event from the shadows... plausible, needs more evidence. 3)Someone off Earth, probably a wizard, pre programmed Orpheus and Will, while off world, to set up the incident... slightly more plausible than 2 as wizards don't have contracts reading their minds and now we know both Will and Orpheus did spend time off worls it is sligtly more plausible. 4)Earths System did it, inorder to manipulate all it's contractees to stop hanging about in just the one place...my favourite pet theory. remember Earth's Contract can lie, it is just costly, and it will sacrifice Avowed if it evaluates it as necessary.

Stonedwarf Stonedwarfson

Depends on how he learns of it. If the details become public knowledge on the triplanets, I don't see any need for discretion, but unless some Artonan journalist digs up the juicy story Parethat-uur would have to dig it up on his own. Then, he might need discretion depending on how he dug it up.

Stonedwarf Stonedwarfson

"Restoring Order to the Disordered", sound like a good healing / knight skill, but it is too on the nose. I doubt Sleyca will include something like it. On the other hand Knights with secondary healing skills sound almost indispensible on a chaos battlefield as Wizard and Avowed healers might not be able to survive the Chaos.

Aspiring Moth

yeah I can't see Sleyca including a skill like that either. all of the knight skills are doing that in the fight vs chaos ultimately. Alis-art'h was restoring order to a chaos field by throwing dirt around (stabilising it with her authority). a skill needs to do far more than just that to fit in secondary healing skills on the likes of Lind-otta and Alden fit well. they already have defensive/utility skills that can be used in medical situations, so adding the ability to double as a healer in a pinch would be a big help in a chaos field

Jim

Ohh somehow I missed that it was made in Tennessee. I was thinking it was the potion, not the thermos.

Shawn

What is the orientation of the boat? I have it in my mind that it is somehow bow side down and stern side up.

Stonedwarf Stonedwarfson

He should just volunteer to keep each dish perfectly fresh and ready, as it is prepared. Even S rank Natalie might struggle getting everything to the table at the same time without something drying out, going cold, or melting or suchlike, The savings in tinfoil, tupperwae, oven and fridge space not to mention the headach of tracking it all, would make inviting Alden worth it even if she didn't already like him.

denatured

I looked for some on ebay after reading this comment. They look solid as heck and say Tennessee on the box. Solid google-fu, ImNotHere.

I think there's a quite likely alternative to your choice 1.: Will had a mental breakdown that was entirely caused by proximity to the demon; with all his actions being dictated by the demon once he got too near. That just requires him to be unlucky enough to pass by Matadero with a demon in residence. (This assumes he was demon-damaged in his earlier trip to the triplanets, which I think is a very reasonable assumption.) Could this timing be caused by someone else in the shadows? Yes, but as you say, we need more evidence.

Imagine if soup was posted now... Oh no. Am I already spoiled from Sunday?

Is Alden ever going to make something origamish for Nat? Or will it only ever be succotash?

Anthony Lutz

@stonedwarf, all artonans learning of it is expected as the rumours were spreading like wevvi blight, but telling any avowed/humans before the full circumstances were known was where discretion was required. 3 avowed were killed by an artonan, thats going to raise lots of questions that they need answers ready for.

Priceless! Bare luminosity flare! Supernovas! Paroxysms! He has an appointment to see the queen healer of the palace! A << convocation >> has been called to behold the << elder' s croak >> ! There are notes about your friendship inscribed on your summoning jacket by the art'hs the und'hs and the ens!

Rrorro’s healing skill worked on one person at a time. A skill that affected multiple people, or from further away, or had a lasting regeneration effect would all be stronger. All areas that a Knight could spend their long, long life striving to perfect without ever doing so.

Most people don’t start their day by preparing to fight. Even a lot of people who reasonably expect to have to fight as part of their normal routine don’t seriously prepare for it (source, veterans, cops, heck, even your average student can expect to get in a couple of fights before completing high school and most of them don’t prepare to fight every day.)

If you look at it the right way.. injuries are a burden, so I imagine Alden could choose to grow his ability to perform quasi healing. I want to say we saw something about the possibility of carrying mental burdens already.

I have a theory. I've posted it elsewhere but it seems relevant here. The main thrust is: the Sinker / Sender incident is an extended consequence of the bad half of the gloss. The good half of the gloss brought Alden to the Velras. The bad half introduced him to the boater, got Manon to dislike him, got him stuck on Orbital Stonechild Thegund, and got Manon to choose to make both him and the Grandwitch uncomfortable at the party. As a direct result Orpheus is criminally liable for terrorism, Lute's cousin is an exiled murderer, and the Grandwitch is functionally in exile as well.

The sinker/sender incident came way too late to be an effect of the gloss, the gloss happened over half a year ago in the story and the chain of events that led to this happening would have happened regardless of the gloss, as Jacob being selected and being so homesick he wants to go back at all cost has nothing to do with the Velras.
