writing this after I finish writing this post: uhm yeah so this is long. you do NOT have to read this out at any point. if you just want to read it for yourself, that's fine. Seriously. This comment is ridiculously long. Also, nothing I say here are spoilers--they are just thoughts and theories of a person who has had WAY too many years and rewatches to think about this show and it's all *only* about things that have built up over the first 2 seasons and not at all about anything that may happen in season three haha okay, i have SO MUCH TO SAY!!! now that you've seen my favorite television episode of all time--first, I really enjoyed your reaction. It is what I hoped. And 2nd, quickly speaking on the 3rd season, there are people who consider it weaker, but many of the very hardcore fans (me included) actually really loved it. Without spoiling anything about it, it is... different, in the manner of storytelling. There are a few reasons for this as well, and the big one being: season 3 isn't 1 season. It's 2 seasons condensed down into 13 episodes. So at the end of s2 and around the time they were preparing for s3, Bryan the creator of the show knew there was a VERY strong possibility of Hannibal being cancelled. And he was right (it was cancelled I think... about 3 episodes into season 3?? actually I was so pissed off I didn't finish watching s3 until 2020 because I was DEVESTATED and didn't want it to end)--so what he did was took his original plans for BOTH season 3 and season 4 (remember, Hannibal was originally supposed to be 7 seasons) and tried his best to condense it into 13 eps in order to give it a satisfying ending as both a season final but ALSO a series final (i'd say it succeeds as well) so it IS a bit packed, however I still enjoy it and there's a few episodes in there that are just brilliant. While this ep here, Mizumono, is my favorite episode of Hannibal, there are a couple of episodes in s3 that are VERY closely trailing just behind it. I won't say which ones tho until we get to them. Now, onto the actual episode. I remember watching it for the first time. I was sat in my living room and the last 15 minutes, my jaw was completely on the floor. Like I literally forgot how to breathe. I remember the exact feeling. Never has a show made me feel that way before or since. Just everything... the acting, the cinematography, the sound design (I particularly love the ticking clock in the background and then that HEARTBREAKING music during Hannibal and Will's final scene... wow). Actually, for that scene, apparently they used SO MUCH fake blood that they actually ruined the floors, lmao But I'm going to rewind a bit and try to help you out as much as I can without spoiling any... future stuff (be very careful looking up reviews in fact. Hannibal has been out a long time, I'm sure it's very easy to google something and something about s3 pops up). The scene with Jack and Will, then Hannibal and Will... this entire time, it's very much a question of what is Will's goal here. Like you think he's on Jack's side, but he's saying the exact same things to both jack and Hannibal. I think Will doesn't even know what side he's on, and there's a few things that show this that you may or may not catch? I know it's hard because this is a show that requires a lot of rewatches to catch anything. The first big one is Hannibal and Will cleaning out Hannibal's office, they're talking about Hannibal's "memory palace"--the place he plans to retreat into should he ever get caught. Will asks him "Can you be happy there?" and he sounds genuine. He is genuine honestly. He really wants to know if Hannibal can be happy in memories, if he can be okay with just his imagination should he get caught and arrested. Hannibal's answer isn't exactly a yes. What he says is that not all the memories he has is good ones, which I think his answer here comes into play a little bit later which I will get to. But then Hannibal smells Freddie. You can tell he's seriously taken aback. He really thought he had Will, but it's in that moment that he realizes everything has been a lie--that Will is most likely plotting with Jack, but he's not quite ready to write off Will so during the dinner, he gives Will one more chance. He's offering to not kill Jack. He's fine not killing Jack. He's fine fleeing in the night, leave behind everything he knows and holds dear so long as Will is willing to go with him (again, this will come into play later), but Will is not budging. He's pushing that Hannibal needs to kill Jack, show Jack who he *really* is and Hannibal knows for a fact then, that Will never planned on leaving with him. Time for the showdown. Things certainly aren't going to plan in more ways than one. Jack and Will are about to be arrested and Alana warns Will... but what does Will do? Not warn Jack, that's for sure. He should, but he doesn't. He calls Hannibal and he hesitates for that briefest moment and then says the same thing Hannibal said to Garrett Jacob Hobbs--"They know." At this point, it's clear that even Will doesn't know whose side he's on, but I think he's starting to understand what he *wants* a little bit better. Abigail. Oh Abigail. yeah so... we never DID see her body, just a lot of blood. The "teacup that i shattered" Hannibal is talking about is "killing" Abigail. Like you said, the big thing was Abigail. More than anything, Will was destroyed over Abigail's death, but think about it--Abigail was about to be arrested as her father's accomplice. Will, and even Hannibal to a point, really cared about Abigail. They didn't want that. The only real option there is for Abigail to either flee or... fake her death. So Hannibal faked her death. It was easy considering he was there to help her after all. But he couldn't tell Will this. Will was... not yet in a place to mentally be able to handle all *this* going on and he wouldn't be until mid-way through season 2, let's be honest. Whether or not we ever learn more about what went down with Abigail being alive remains to be seen however... who knows (well I do, but...) Now, Will upon seeing Abigail was shocked and he just had a whole lot of realizations in that moment I think. "A place was made for Abigail in your world"--yeah, the entire plan was for the three of them to be together, like you said, as a family, and I think Will realized how much he fucked up, but how was he supposed to know right? It was a surprise (and boy was he surprised). "You were supposed to leave...." Will said and you were somewhat confused. It's because... yeah, he wanted Hannibal to leave. He thought calling Hannibal up would make Hannibal flee instead of confront Jack. And this brings me back to the earlier point of asking if Hannibal would be happy in his memory palace... Will has a very one-sided thing going on with Hannibal that is the epitome of "can't live with them, can't live without them" and it boils down to this. Will clearly couldn't take that step and join Hannibal (the Abigail thing was honestly... what was holding him back though), but he does care about Hannibal as fucked up as it is, and wants Hannibal to be happy, in a way. As weird as it is, Hannibal is a person very full of life in a way that people should strive to be. He enjoys what he does, and he enjoys it whole-heartedly. As he mentioned in an earlier episode, I don't remember which one, he's not a person who ever thinks about living past his death. Life is finite, and that's what makes life worth living in a way. Seeing a person like that imprisoned, even that was Will's original goal ("you would take my life" "no, not your life" "my freedom then? confine me to a prison cell"), probably just felt wrong somehow.... so Will had hoped he would leave. And Hannibal didn't and we get that beautiful moment of Hannibal admitting that they were supposed to be together and i feel like you can see it on Will's face that, in that moment, he wishes he had made that choice to leave too. It was like his deepest desire was right in front of him... and then Hannibal, betrayed and clearly hurt (there's a few shot there where Hannibal actually is crying--people say he's a psychopath, but he's actually not. Hannibal feels fairly intensely) snatched it away... he gutted him like Will *gutted* him. I want to make a note, that some of the subtitles are wrong here and it's actually quite important so I'm sure you heard what was actually said (its fairly clear, so I don't know why the subtitles always get this wrong) but its Will's response to Hannibal saying: "I let you see me. I gave you a rare gift, but you didn't want it." (and this was all Hannibal ever wanted... he wanted someone to see him, understand him, and not turn away from him... AKA Hannibal is lonely as hell) the subtitles said "No, I did not", but Will very clearly says "Didn't I?" because he did... he wanted to see and understand Hannibal SO MUCH, so he rebukes Hannibal's claim that Will didn't want to see him. It's such an important line, i wish the subtitles had it correct. And then Hannibal asks "Did you believe you could change me? The way that I have changed you?" and Will replies "I already did." And this is something we've talked about in the case of Will. He has changed... a *lot*. It's an obvious change. What's less obvious is the way that Hannibal has changed and when Will says that, it gives Hannibal pause because he realizes that Will is right; he has changed. Before Will, before any of this, Hannibal would *never* have given up the life he's created. He loves his life as a psychiatrist in Baltimore, throwing dinner parties, attending the opera, friendly with most people. His life is perfect. But Will comes into the picture and he sees an opportunity for companionship (and very clearly love, like there's no question there, like you said, there's way more than friendship or "bromance" here and Mads Mikkelsen played it that way on purpose), true companionship unlike anything before and he starts letting his "person suit" unravel. Very rapidly as well. Season 2 is 3 months? Season 1 was probably about the same? It's been about half a year or a bit more since Will and Hannibal met? Hannibal's life is in tatters. He literally burned parts of it in a fireplace. He would never have let it get this far before Will. Will changed him. Irrevocably. And then he calls Abigail over and slits her throat in the same spot her father slit her's all those months before, but there's a difference this time--Hannibal isn't there to save her. Will couldn't save her the first time, he needed Hannibal to do it for him and Will is lying on the floor bleeding out himself. But Abigail was a surprise for Will--they were meant to be a happy family but Will broke Hannibal's heart and so he did the one thing he knew would hurt Will beyond anything else--he cut Abigail's throat directly in front of Will. And Hannibal leaves into the rain (note: Mads Mikkelsen says he was crying in this scene I think) and Will bleeds out on the kitchen floor trying to save Abigail as the stag (the good parts of Will as you put it) slowly dies. And the question we were left with at the end of it all is.... are they all dead? Did any of them survive? They're all breathing at the end of the ep but... the way things look... and we had to wait an entire freaking year to find out. Thankfully you only have to wait a few days! (imagine if they had cancelled the show after THIS episode--I would've freaked out) Anyway............. yeah, I said I was going to write a lot for this episode, so I hope I didn't let you down on that front lmao. I'm very much looking forward to your reactions to season 3, don't let anything negative you've heard impact how you feel about it. It does have mixed opinions but I think, as time has gone on, it's much more positive than anything else. Hopefully you will feel the same (and here I sit, thinking about all the recent articles and interviews, praying to god that a season 4 announcement is on the way)

The thing is, Jack and Will had Hannibal, they succeeded in fooling him. They were so close. Also my heart breaks for Hannibal during the final dinner. He gives Will a last chance to leave with him. And denies him in the worst way (by lying). Question is, would Will had said yes if he knew Hannibal saved Abigail as a "honeymoon present"?
