You asking for the magic reveal was us back then every week since season 4 XD But I agree, there are so many episodes in season 5 that could have been the perfect setting for a magic reveal. Angsty reveal would have been Uther telling Arthur right before disappearing in episode 3. Good and angsty would have been during the Disir episode when Arthur had to make a choice to allow magic in Camelot or not. This episode, with Merlin showing his magic and freeing Gwen from the enchantment. So many lost opportunities... So yeah I totally get your frustration. What I love about the intro of the episode is that we get right into it. No Arthur not believing Merlin, no Merlin beating around the bush, nope we get Merlin to show Arthur that Gwen is not herself right away. The arc was after all already long enough, we did not need Arthur being stubborn about believing Merlin on top of it all. So yeah, I like that intro. The mention of Elyan at the beginning... He deserved so much better... I do love how Evil Gwen is so convincing with all the knights. That's after all one of the main reason Morgana is using her, because Gwen has the support of the knights whereas she could never gain it (remember the finale of season 3 when she ordered Leon to swear fealty and when he refused she had all those innocents citizen murdered....). Like you said, the plot of the episode is pretty straight forward, it is a good episode but a little too predictable at times. I was also a bit disappointed at how easy it was to free Gwen. We had this nearly 4 episode arc developped and then it's all resolved in a second. I guess if you ship Arthur/Gwen, it's all very satisfying, the cute reminder of the second proposal. But for me, it's just a little too easy and I kept expecting Morgana to show up again and ruin the plan somehow, after all, we don't really know why she just backed out after confronting Mordred. She could have easily woken up again and tried to stop the spell. This makes her look a lot weaker than she's supposed to be, Mordred defeating her so easily.... There are so many fun moments in this episode. One of my fave is when Gwen just drunk the Bella Donna and Merlin, Arthur and Gaius just look at her waiting XD There's a meme about that moment in which they added lines about the three of them judging Gwen because of her outfit XD You'll definitely have to check all the memes in the fandom when you're done with the show, there are so many but I can't share them yet because of potential spoilers. I also love Merlin's reaction to Gaius saying "this times I have chosen a woman" XD Merlin's WTF face is just so priceless XD Then we get the Dolma, true legend of the show XD OMG I remember the first time seing the Dolma and I was in stitches. Colin's acting is just so good and I LOVE the sass XD Especially when she sasses Arthur and even flirts with him XD There was once a crack fic about the Dolma coming back and harassing Arthur, it was hilarious. Also, they had to shoot Colin's scenes again separately because Bradley and Alexander couldn't keep a straight face facing Colin as the Dolma XD Colin is also really good with changing his voice, anyone outside the fandom, watching that scene would have a hard time telling it's him talking. It's really brillant. I mean he already is really good as Dragoon the Great so are we even surprised at this point? :P Mordred really shines in this episode. I have to admit, that like Merlin, I was still a little wary of him by this point but it's hard by the end of the episode to not trust he's a good character who only wants good things for Camelot and Arthur. I love the scenes with Merlin, because you can see that Merlin is still struggling but he's also a bit more willing to listen and give Mordred the benefit of the doubt. But then we get the scene when he litteraly leaves Mordred behind unconscious near Morgana, and you just know that Merlin is so far from ever really trusting Mordred... You had a good point saying that it could be Merlin's actions that could sway Mordred in the end.... I was thinking the same thing by that point. Morgana not hearing Merlin use his very loud Dragonlord voice just doesn't make sense at this point. She was so near, how the hell did she not hear it ? At this point, some of these oblivious scenes are just plain annoying and frustrating. And once again, it makes her look stupid and less threatening than what she's supposed to be. It would have been so much more interesting if Morgana discovered Merlin's a Dragonlord in this episode. Then having her start piecing it all together. I would definitely see a scene like that : Morgana seeing Merlin order Aithusa away and frowing. Then she'd have flashback visions (maybe by the end of the episode, as a cliffhanger) of all the times there was a dragon involved in thwarting her plans before. Then realising that Merlin being a Dragonlord could also mean he could be even more, and then have the episode end with Morgana whispering "Emrys" then fade to black. I also love the little Merlin/Arthur moment we get in this episode. They're subtle but they're still really good. I love the one when Arthur looks to Merlin for approval about the plan to save Gwen. And of course you pointed it out :). Another little moment, it's more a blink and you miss it, but the way their hands touch when Merlin is passing the vial to him (yeah I guess you'd have to be a hardcore Merthur shipper to even see that one :P). But the big one, is when Arthur panicks when Merlin just fell off the cliff. He's so worried he leaves his wife behind (who could have easily been snatched back by Morgana if Arthur and Merlin had not been rescued by Mordred) too save his Merlin. Also the worry in his tone when Merlin is not waking up. It's like Arthur realises how much he cares about Merlin in moments he almost loses him (refer to the whole intro of episode 4x06 with Arthur caring for Merlin and being so tender with him). Also, in the audio commentary by Angel and Alexander, we get this : (this is the scene when Arthur is looking down at Merlin after he fell and starts climbing down) Alex: No what are you doing that for? Angel: He's got to rescue him, his love. I mean, even Angel, the Queen Guinevere herself thinks Merlin is Arthur's love :D Also, I love how they also point out this : (from the scene when Mordred sees Gwen's arm fall from under the sheet) Alex: I think I'm the only observant person in Camelot. Angel: Yeah, I think you are, everyone else is stupid. Even the cast is aware of the bullshit of the obliviousness and blindness of everyone in Camelot XD When You're done with the show, I definitely recommand the audio commentaries, there are some really fun ones :D When you pointed out that it must not have been comfortable for Gwen to be on that horse, well this was actually the episode Angel hated filming the most. In some of the scenes she was obviously replaced by a dummy but she did have to do some of the scenes like in the wheelbarrow, or when Arthur was carrying Gwen. Also, the water in the pool was freezing and you can even see her teeth shatter in the scene when she's in the water. Also, Bradley kept messing his lines and they had to redo quite a few in the water.... Poor Angel... Another thing that we Merthur shipper like to point out is how Arthur didn't notice Gwen was not herself for 3 episodes but he counts the number of days he doesn't see Merlin smile. Next episode we get Alator back and Morgana is continuing her obssessive quest of finding out who Emrys is. I'm really looking forward to your reaction for the episode. But I'm also sad we gettig nearer to the end now... Welll, have a nice week and until next time :)
