I was both excited and a litte dreading you reacting to this episode. For me, it's one of those that I have a hard time re-watching. First of all, I was a Lancelot/Gwen shipper from the moment they met in season 1, Angel and Santiago had great chemistry from the start, and granted some of the lines felt rushed and a little over the top at times, I loved them together. If Lancelot had been a regular character from early on, I'm sure they would have eneded differently. I still think, the tragic love triangle would have happened, but it would have been more developped. But Santiago's schedule was too busy and he never became a regular... Also, the show is called Merlin, and having such a huge storyline like that, probably would have taken too much focus. Anyway, just to say that when I heard rumors of Lancelot coming back back in season 3, I really hoped they would still do that part of the legend. As you know, I never shipped Arthur with Gwen (he belongs with Merlin) and the way it was so prominent in season 2 and 3 just did nothing for me. As I re-watched the show, I tolerated the relationship, but even today, I still don't feel anything in their big romantic scenes. This episode is both good and bad in my opinion. It's good because the cinematography is just stunning in some scenes. The acting is also to be praised, especially the council scene with Arthur and Lancelot fighting and Gwen coming in between them. Angel gives me chills everythime I watch that moment when she says "this has to stop please". Also, of course, the scene between Arthur and Gwen afterwards. Now that really showed us how good they had both become as actors. Bradley shines in those kind of scenes and when he loses his temper and shakes Gwen, wow, just brillant, and then backing off after realising he did not want to hurt her like that. Angel in that scene really breaks my heart too, I love her as a character and she did not deserve that... Colin's acting at the end breaks my heart.... That man can make me cry so easily.... I'm glad he got to say properly goodbye to Lancelot but it's so heartbreaking and I hate that it had to be this way.... Now onto the reasons why I don't like this episode. I hate the way they brought Lancelot back, Lancelot was among my favorite characters since he apperaed in season 1 and I love him, and the writers just did him wrong... I know it's not him but still, I hate the way they used him in this episode. Merlin is acting so out of character this episode. The Merlin we know and love would have done anything in his power to actually bring back his friend. Why didn't he try the necromancy spell earlier? I'm sorry, but Lancelot is so important for Merlin, and it just didn't make sense that he wouldn't at least try to figure out a way to truly bring him back. Also, Merlin is acting so out of character with Gwen, why didn't he visit her in the dungeon (it's not as if he wouldn't have disobeyed Arthur's order to not go see her), why didn't help her with her cart and tried to confort her ? Merlin and Gwen's friendship is one of the things I love in the show and this episode (apart from the beginning) just doesn't make sense with the way Merlin isn't even trying to help her, even Gaius is condemning her at the end... I'm sorry, but all characters are just acting so weird, it feels like it's someone who doesn't even know them who wrote the episode.... And another reason why this episode isn't really good is the lazy writing, with Gwen being manipulated by magic. It's just nothing new, and granted it was clever of Morgana to use that, it just would have been so much more interresting to see a real struggle for Gwen and her feelings. For me, her feelings for Lancelot never really went away, and the way she grieved him in 4x02 was proof of that. I'm not saying she still has feelings strong enough to rival those she has for Arthur. Even Arthur seemed aware of those feelings when he asked her if she had doubts about their wedding (that's the only well written scene in the entire episode for me). I just think it would have been so much more interesting if for once, magic didn't play a part in the drama. I don't know, i just have a lot of feelings about this episode and how cheap they treated Lancelot and Gwen's realtionship. And this episode is quite controversial in the fandom for similar reasons. I do love the scene with Merlin complimenting the chicken broth and then asking about necromancy XD That line just gets me everytime. Also, when you said that having all the candles was such a fire hasard, I thought the exact same thing! All Arwen fans were like "of so romantic" and I was like "well, there goes Gwen's house burnt to the crisp..." Also, Gwen's reaction to the proposal just makes me laugh, and Arthur's confused face when she hugs him XD, at least the music is there to save the scene a little. I also love how Percival knows Merlin's worried about Arthur getting hurt, all the knights know about Merlin adn Arthur :D There's also a cute deleted scene from this episode, in which Arthur is nervous about the proposal and Merlin's there to boost him up, and at the end of it Arthur lovingly ruffles Merlin's hair, it's really adorable. Wow this comment is a bit of a mess so I better stop there. Next episode preview show that Elyan is going to have some focus and I'm really looking forward to your reaction to it (and of course the rest of the season, because as you said, this episode left a lot of stuff unresolved, mainly for Arthur and Gwen). Until next week then :)
