Dan always appreciated birds. The way they evolved into the complex creatures that they are. Besides many birds looking majestic and proud, they have one trait which truly shows how special they are. They can fly.

Even though it was unrealistic Dan always wondered how it would be to fly, even for a little while. See the world from such heights and admire the view. Sadly humans weren’t made for such tasks and therefore Dan’s daydreams were often cut short by cold realism.

One night was different. It was the New Year night and Dan was looking out of his window at the beautiful fireworks in the distance. The man spotted something between the colourful lights – A falling star, or so it looked like. “Oh, how I wish that I could fly like an eagle, break away from this boring human life and… Eh, who am I kidding again.” – Dan sighed and stepped away from the window to take a sip of martini.

He lifted up the glass and realised that his hands felts strange. The bones in them were tugged at, some of them felt quite the opposite as if they were forcefully shortened and shrank. “Huh? W-What’s happening? Why do I feel so hot all of the sudden.” – Dan yelped and wiped the sweat off his brow.

Only to feel that his hand felt bizarre. Dan looked down at his hands and gasped when he saw them morph into what appeared to be featherless wings. The flesh of his fingers was fusing together, while the bones were lengthening and becoming lighter – The fingers disappearing completely was just a matter of seconds.

“Oh shit! M-My hands, oh God! And my clothes, so loose… Am I shrinking!?” – Dan exclaimed shocked as his clothes continued to get increasingly baggy on his shrinking body. The man flailed his morphing arms, until with several snaps they reformed into what would soon become a pair of complete wings. Dan struggled to, but managed to throw his shirt off him after some effort. Just in time as his wing-like arms rotated in their sockets and his shoulder blades started elongating to fit his new species.

Many thoughts were racing through Dan’s head, but he started to understand what was happening to him as thousands of goosebumps appeared all over his body. As they did his human body hair started slowly falling out in clumps and leaving him even more naked and exposed, but only temporarily. The man winced in slight aversion as his bellybutton started to fill with flesh and leave avian skin where it used to be. Since Dan was ceasing to be a mammal his nipples started disappearing as well, flattening against his increasingly bird-like chest and losing their colouration rapidly.

As Dan’s legs started crunching and his feet began elongating the rest of his body started getting covered in almost transparent needles that began piercing his skin. The growths slowly turned into tiny feathers, but most of them grew bigger and stronger constantly until they were fully formed. Dan shuddered as he realised that his entire body except for his lower legs was covered in a mix of brown and white feathers.

The transformation wasn’t overly painful, but it was rather uncomfortable. Dan’s heart was beating fast during the entire process and he was sweating for as much as he was able to. Until the skin all over his body became completely altered that is. Even the features on Dan’s head were gradually turning more avian.

His ears were starting to shrink and they were gradually sucked into his head, leaving only earholes deep between the short brown feathers. A mild headache was signifying that Dan’s head started to change shape already. It began shrinking, narrowing and flattening at the top to become a more compact version of itself. There was just one change that caught Dan off guard as his gums started to hurt. The man coughed several times as his teeth began loosening and falling out of his changing mouth and onto the floor below. Dan gulped nervously as he realised that his mouth would soon change drastically as it will turn into a predatory beak.

Dan continued to shrink, but the process was slowing down as the man wasn’t becoming a simple sparrow, but a rather big bird of prey. Dan sighed in relief, but he was quickly forced to grunt in discomfort as he felt his thinned heels rise and his feet reform. The man was shocked to see that his lower legs have lost practically all the fat and only the bones and muscles were left – So it seemed anyway as his legs were way more streamlined and lightweight now.

The man stared in awe as his toes started elongating and developing muscles necessary for holding onto branches amongst other things. It was strange to see one toe shrink and disappear from each of his altering foot. Only to then watch two toes, one on each foot migrating backwards into a common avian alignment. Dan shivered when he saw something black forming underneath his increasingly loose toenails. The black mass pushed hard at the toenails until they began falling out and revealing what the black mass was. Sharp, resilient and curved talons were extending out of what used to be Dan’s toetips.

Dan had trouble standing on the ground on his completely altered feet, but he had no other option. His sharp talons scraped against the floorboards. The sole fact that the talons were so long astounded Dan – He had no idea that some birds had such long and deadly-looking talons. Dan stared at his avian feet as they began sprouting yellow scales all over. Dan’s clothes were nothing more than a big heap at his feet and the man was completely naked if not for his feathers.

The man’s torso was contracting and shortening, while at the same time its upper parts were pushing forwards into a more proper shape for a bird. Dan’s hips felt bizarre as they were forcefully squeezed together and lost a lot of bones to become more lightweight. There was a mounting pressure however close to his hips.

Dan gasped as he felt a bump of flesh form above his diminishing buttocks. His well-muscled avian tail was slowly taking shape as his tailbone remoulded considerably to fit it. Dan realised that he was able to move the appendage pretty well. The horror of the situation was disappearing and excitement was building up inside Dan’s changing head.

The man blinked several times as his eyes began to change. His vision gradually became sharper and way better at long distances. A strange stiffness was building up inside Dan’s mouth. His gums were peeling down and revealing a hard mass of bones and keratin that slowly began pushing out of his mouth. Dan flapped his wings in confusion as his beak continued to slip past his lips and stretch them, until they completely disappeared. As the yellow-black beak slowly finished its growth Dan’s nose got forcefully flattened against it. Only the nostrils were left at the base of the beak.

Dan screeched in an avian manner as his head slowly finished reshaping. The noise caught him off-guard and the man realised that he wasn’t able to speak anymore as his vocal chords must have finished changing. His neck allowed his head to rotate more than it did previously too.

Dan’s changes were slowly coming to an end, but his organs were still reshaping inside of him, but not only as the man came to realise. He lifted up his tail and bent over instinctively as something strange started happening underneath his tail. Dan squawked in confusion and then looked down to see what happened to his genitalia. His penis and testicles have shrank down considerably and were now pulled into a forming genital slit, while at the same time losing their primate shape. Bizarrely enough Dan felt his butthole pull closer towards the forming slit as the two began to descend into a forming cloaca.

Soon the strange sensations disappeared and Dan was finally able to calm down after the intensive transformation. Dan wouldn’t ever believe that his wish would come true, especially since he didn’t expect it to. He was always curious how it would feel to fly, but when he said that he wanted to fly like an eagle he meant it as a metaphor. It seems however that the falling star understood that wish directly.

It was already past midnight, the loud explosions of fireworks outside of Dan’s house were calming down and there was less of them with each passing minute. Dan decided that it was a good time to try out his strong wings and do what he always dreamed of.

Recalling the documents about birds of prey Dan tried to mimic the bird-like movements and fly. To his shock he managed to start flying as his body was literally designed to just that and so every muscle in it helped him to keep himself in the air. Dan screeched happily and flew out of his house, leaving it behind and welcoming his new life.
