Ever wonder why it’s so hard to swat a fly? Our producer Gabriela Quirós answers why in her upcoming Deep Look episode. With the ongoing coronavirus restrictions, filming had to be conducted outdoors, and cinematographer Josh Cassidy filmed in Gabriela’s Bay Area backyard. The best way to attract their actors for the video? A tasty burger with all the trimmings. And it worked: “The flies were really drawn to it,” said Gabriela. She later added a fruit plate and some vegetables –– and learned that they really loved landing on broccoli!

Josh was able to film compelling high-speed video of the flies making sharp turns as they flew towards the meal. “You probably have never seen flies in action like you'll see in our video,” added Gabriela. “In our episode, we explain that tiny modified wings called halteres make it possible for flies to quickly rotate, as well as to land on your ceiling.”

The Deep Look team also used a black tent to protect their camera from the wind, which allowed Josh to film stable close-ups of the flies.

He was able to capture footage of a fly's legs as seen in this photo.

This episode premieres Tues. Nov. 24, but Patreon supporters will get a sneak peek this Friday!
