"Two Storms"

The filming of this episode was so incredible! It felt so raw and almost invasive? Very real! We really feel for all of these characters... they are each dealing with their grief in their own way. The Bent Neck Lady is a tragic character now 😢 Can't wait to see where this is going!

This is a masterclass in horror directing, one that should be shown in schools. The camera despite giving you moving perspective still remains focused on the important parts of the scene, allowing the actors to really make use of the space. Everything feels alive and in motion, it feels realistic instead of being a static window, that we're actively in the scene too. This is also an episode that has so many blink and you'll miss it horrors lurking in the shadows that it almost feels a disservice to watch it once. One of if not the best episode across all of Mike Flanagan's tv works Also I had a good chuckle watching you two spend most of this episode leaning left, right up and forward trying to soak in everything and make sense of what you're seeing.

This episode is rightly lauded for its cinematography -- from the first moment of the episode until Hugh walks down the hallway and ends up in Hill House - the chandelier crashing to the floor - there are no cuts. Everything up until then was one take, and when we return to the funeral home there are more long takes. There are only five shots in the entire episode.

Mike Flanagan hasn't done anything to the heights this episode reached since. It's probably one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen.

Baker

I think he got pretty close with Midnight Mass personally, but that's just my opinion. This episode is definitely a modern classic though.

Nailed and well said. I've been a big fan of single-shot takes ever since I watched that opening shot of Serenity in the cinema years ago, every time I watch this series and get to this ep I love how it's all one shot when their Dad walks in and the actors switch out and then back again with no visible cuts. Fantastic part of an absolutely great series.

Good point about MF and this ep. I find that his work peaks and troughs: I love this series, not so much Bly Manor. I really liked Midnight Mass, not so much The Midnight Club. I really liked The House of Usher too, so I'm hoping to be nicely surprised by his next work. I've enjoyed everything he's done though, I deffo rate the chap's work.

Baker

Yeah, even when he doesn't hit his highs he usually puts out enjoyable horror work, has done some decent horror film work though I feel he's more suited to limited series. Mass was a return to form imo, people have made great cases for why they think it's better than HH, regardless they're Flanagan at his best. Here's hoping his next work continues a great trend, I've heard it's a Sci-Fi film based on a Stephen King novella and starring Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill, should be interesting.

When the dad sees them as kids it reminded of my mom telling me that whenever she has a dream about me, I’m always a little kid, never an adult.

I understand that they all grief in their own way, but Steve needs to stfu :D

I don't know if you've already spoken about this and sorry if i've missed it but are u planning to watch the haunting of bly manor after this? It's not as amazing as this one but it's pretty good. Has some of the same cast as well😁

Olivia

Yeah havent watched usher fully yet but mass was good too. I love how all of them have this same creepy vibe

If you're ever unsure if something moved or not in the background... it definitely moved

This episode cemented this series as one of my favourites. The way the actors portray emotions really draws you in until you feel like you are looking at a genuine family grieving. Heartbreaking

This episode makes me cry everytime. Poor Nellie was always just there screaming for someone to notice her and listen to her and nobody listened. Even when she's dead and they're together, they focus on their petty squabbles and she literally has to do all this stuff to make them listen and stop. Poor Nellie, you deserved the world :(

I love the visual representation of dad seeing his kids after ages and having to mentally recalibrate them to adults, even Nellie, when he first sees her again in her coffin

Masterclass of an episode! If y’all end up watching another of his shows, Midnight Mass would be great to react to.

Baker

Yeah Steven is an ass lol (albeit a complicated ass), though most of them are to some extent except Nel :(

seconding that, it's got some fantastic monologues

This show is Epic, that is all🤠

That Statue's head did turn! Good Eye! There are multiple hidden "ghost" in all the episodes!
