The dub says it a little more clearly. Bert says "One of you has to do it, one of you, has to stain your hands with my blood." Aka if you want Eren back, you have to kill me.

Bertholt is my favorite character in the show for reasons I won't be able to fully explain for a while. The dynamics at work here where we can't understand the technicalities of Ymir's or the warriors' motivations at all but nevertheless we get almost everything we need to know from the vibes alone. Man this story is just special.

If that's what the dub says I think that's a bad translation. I think he's definitely meant to be talking about himself here, "Someone has to be the ones to stain their hands with blood" is a justification for all the deaths he's caused as the colossal

hman70: No this is wrong, Bertholdt literally just had a speech admitting that they don't deserve to live for what they've done etc. If he were to immediately go and justify it after that would negate the whole point of his speech. The first comment is correct. If you want Eren back one of you has to be wiling to stain your hands with my blood. This also ties into that scene in season 4 bringing everything full circle

Completely disagree both in this moment and the other one you’re referring to. The line is about not wanting to commit a horrible act but feeling like you have to anyway. I don’t agree that him justifying his actions negates the point of his speech. He says he feels guilty and awful and that he deserves to die. But then he reaffirms that it had to be done anyway. “I didn’t want to do it but I had to” basically

The show slowly drip feeds you little bits to keep you interested and guessing while also withholding a lot of information for later on. The same goes for next episode; it’s wild how much is foreshadowed on a second watch when you know exactly what’s happening. Glad you guys are enjoying it!

Backing up hman too, if thats the dubs approach its totally missinforming. Dubs are known for translation errors which makes it a worse experience watching any type of show (tvshows/anime). I see why dubs are needed though for some audiences.
